MIND SOUND RESONANCE TECHNIQUE (MSRT)

Introduction
A series of advanced techniques of yoga to work at Annamaya, Pranamaya,
Manomaya, Vijnanamaya and Anandamaya Kosas – the five layers of
consciousness of human beings called Panca Kosas, has been developed by Swami
Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samstha (SVYASA), Bangalore as part of the
IAYT (Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy) to combat the biggest of killers like
cancer and AIDS.

MSRT is one of the advanced Yoga Techniques for achieving the goal of positive
health, will-power, concentration, good memory and deep relaxation. MSRT
generates resonance throughout the body by repetition of mental sounds. This
helps in revitalizing the internal energy in the body.

STEPS IN MSRT
1. Opening prayer “om tryambakaà…”
2. (a) Loud A, U, M and AUM – 3 rounds
(b) Ahata – Anahata A…U…M… and AUM… 3 rounds
3. Maha Murutyunjaya Mantra (MM)
(a) Loud MM – 3 rounds
(b) Ahata – Anahata MM…MM…MM…MM… 3 rounds
4. Anahata AUM (Mental Pepetition of AUM) – 9 rounds
5. Ajapajapa OM to silence (Spontanious effortless process) – 9 rounds
6. Stay in silence
7. Resolve – 9times
8. Closing prayer “sarve bhavantu…”

Explanation of MSRT steps in detail:

STEP-1: PRAYER

Make yourself comfortable. Sit in any comfortable meditative posture or lie flat on
your back in Savasana. Recognize the contact between the body and the floor –
surface awareness. Recognize the position of your hands, knees and legs. Relax
completely, relax. . . Recognize the natural, effortless movement of the abdomen,
almost imperceptible, attune to your breathing, natural, effortless breathing.
This is a very ideal and congenial atmosphere for the pursuit of our practice.

Now the prayer:

Meaning: We offer our salutations to the three eyed lord Siva to increase the
fragrance and vitality in us, to release us from the bondage (fear) of death, as
effortlessly as a ripe cucumber falls from its creeper automatically.

Please adopt Namaskar mudra, prayer lead and follow:

` ÈyMbk< yjamhe sugiNx< puiòvxRnm!,
%vaRékimv bNxnaNm&TyaemuR]Iy ma=m&tat!.
` zaiNt> zaiNt> zaiNt> .
Om tryambakaà yajämahe sugandhià puñöivardhanam |
Urvärrukamiva bandhanänmåtyormukñéya mä'måtät ||
Om çäntiù çäntiù çäntiù ||

Feel the vibrations and the waves of resonance of MM throughout the body. We
gently pass on to the second step.

STEP 2:

a) Loud chanting of A-kara, U-kara, M-kara and A-U-M (3 rounds)

Now get ready for chanting. You will chant A-kara loudly, as you do, adjust the
frequency of your chant so that it will match with the natural frequency of you
body. You will feel fine vibrations in the lower parts of the body from the toes to
waist, if not the whole body.
Please inhale deeply and chant A-kara.

Now we will chant U-kara loudly producing resonance in the middle part from
waist to throat, if not the whole body.
Keep a little air in the mouth and force the sound U-kara through it to produce a
powerful resonance. Invariably the whole body resonates.
Please inhale deeply and chant U-kara.

Let us chant M-kara loudly and feel the resonance throughout the head, if not the
whole body.
Please inhale deeply and chant M-kara.

Now in a single breath chant A-U-M in combination with the ratio 1:1:2 and feel
the resonant wave spreading from toes to head. Please inhale deeply and chant A-
U-M.
This is one complete round. Let us repeat this for two more rounds for a total of
three rounds. Let go, relax completely, relax. . . Now we gently pass on to the
second part of step 2.

b) Ahata-Anahata chant of A-kara, U-kara, M-kara and A-U-M (3 rounds)

Please inhale deeply and chant A-kara loudly…. Repeat the same mantra A-kara in
the mind. Anahata, and feel the same resonance in the lower part of the body from
toes to waist.

Please inhale deeply and chant U-kara loudly….. Repeat the same mantra U-kara
in the mind and feel the same resonance in the middle part from the waist to throat.

Please inhale deeply and chant M-kara loudly….. Repeat the same mantra M-kara
in the mind and feel the same resonance in the head region.

Now combine A-U-M in a single breath. Please inhale deeply and chant A-U-M.
Repeat
A-U-M in the mind and feel a wave of resonance moving from toes to head.

This is one complete round of Ahata-Anahata. Let us repeat two more rounds for a
total of three rounds. Now let go. Relax completely, relax. . .
Let us move further to the next step.

STEP 3 Maha Mrtyunjaya Mantra (MM)

a) Ahata (Loud) chanting of (MM) ----3 rounds

In this part (a) of step 3, we will chant the MM loudly with proper intonation,
producing resonance while chanting. This is ahata phase. Lead and follow to begin
with and all together later.
So, let us get ready for loud chanting of MM.
Please lead and follow . . . . . Recognize the patterns of resonant waves flowing
from one part to other part of the body. Carefully record the effects in the mind.
This is one round, two more rounds for a total of three rounds all together. Please
inhale deeply and chant MM all together. Now, let go, relax completely. We gently
pass on to the part (b) of step 3. Ahata-Anahata of MM.
b) Ahata-Anahata of MM

We will chant MM loudly all together with group awareness and will produce
resonance while chanting. This is Ahata phase. Repeating the same mantra in the
mind is the Anahata phase.

So, please get ready for the practice of chanting MM all together.

Please inhale deeply and chant MM loudly all together . . .

Feel the pattern of resonance waves throughout the body.

Repeat the MM in the mind and produce same pattern of resonance effect
throughout the body. This is one complete round of Ahata-Anahata of MM.
Let us repeat two more rounds for a total of three rounds

As we progress, add on understanding and feeling aspect.

Each time, to diffuse the sound resonance to silence, Śantih Śantih Śantih is
chanted. So please get ready for the second round Ahata-Anahata of MM.

Now let go, relax completely, relax. . .

We gently pass on to the step. Anahata A-U-M . . . 9 rounds

STEP 4 Anahata A-U-M – 9 rounds

(Mental Repetition of AUM feeling the resonance waves of ‘AUM’ kara

throughout the body)

Now please get ready for the practice of Anahata AUM.

Let us chant AUM in the mind, generating the resonant waves throughout the
body.
Feel the vibrations and waves of resonance. Continue repetitions for a total of 9
rounds.

We gently pass on the step 5

STEP 5 Ajapajapa of OM to Silence (9 rounds)

Let us chant OM in the mind feeling resonant waves generated at the toes and
moving upto the head. Intensify the awareness of feeling of vibrations and the
waves of resonance throughout the whole body.

Repeat the same process again and again each time feeling the generation of the
resonant waves reaching the peak and diffusing into silence after each wave - - -
Continue repetitions for a total of 9 rounds - - -
Each time the diffusion into silence becomes clearer and clearer.
Feel the resonant waves of AUM coming up and spreading throughout the body
and diffusing into the silence - - -

Let us gently pass on to step 6 – Silence

STEP 6 Stay in Silence

Recognize that at the end of 9th round of Ajapajapa Om, all the waves of OM sound
resonance diffuse into expansive silence, the blissful awareness of silence. Feel
silence, infinite silence. Feel the infinite silence like the infinite blue sky, full of
bliss, abundant peace and tranquility. Let us stay in silence as long as we can. Let
us dwell in silence longer and longer - - - Now let go. Relax completely, Relax. . .
Now we go forward to step 7 – Resolve

STEP 7 Resolve

From the depth of ocean of silence, raise a wave of positive thought in the form of
resolve and repeat it with full faith for a total of 9 rounds and allow diffusing into
the wave of silence.
Let go. Relax completely, Relax. . .

STEP 8 Closing Prayer

Adopt Namaskära mudrä then chant the prayer all together. The prayer is the
Dhyänänantra prärthanä and it’s meaning is: Let all be happy, let all be free from
diseases, let all align with the ultimate reality, let no one suffer from miseries. Om peace,
peace, peace.

With gratitude surrender yourself. Rub the palms of the hands together and place them
gently over the closed eyes. With a beautiful smile on your face gently open your eyes.

Mind according to Science and Yoga

Mind according to Science

According to many of the western modern science, mind is mere functioning of the
brain. EEG records these changes in the brain. Brain Atlas can scan different
sections of the brain at processing colour photographs, showing the structure of the
brain – distribution of energies and activities.
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) can record even the minute changes in
blood flow in the capillaries of the brain. All these sophisticated equipment have
clearly indicated that we know very little (hardly 2%) about the capacities of the
brain. And hence much less about the mind.

Mind according to Yoga

According to Yoga, mind is conglomeration of thoughts, thoughts which are

manifest and which are unmanifest as in wakeful state, dream state and deep sleep
state. Patanjali gives 5 modifications of mind as Pramana, Viparyaya, Vikalpa,
Nidra and Smriti. Mind, therefore, is a set of unmanifest thoughts stored deep
down the memory lane at all our unconscious, sub-conscious and superconscious
states as well as the manifest thoughts of the day.
Thus, mind is the ensemblage of thoughts manifest and unmanifest.

Advanced Technique
A series of advanced techniques of Yoga to work at Annamaya, Pranamaya,
Manomaya, Vijnanamaya and Anandamaya Kosas – the five layers of
consciousness of human beings called Panca Kosas, has been developed by
SVYASA, Bangalore as a part of the IAYT to combat the biggest of killers –
Cancer and AIDS.

In advanced technique I, we have two practices

1) Pranic Energisation Technique (PET)
PET is an advanced technique of Yoga in which we use our prana shakti to
energize our entire body. Each and every organs and system of the body can be
revitalized by this process that strengthens the immune defense. So that the modern
dreaded killers – Cancer, AIDS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, etc. can be effectively
healed.

2) Mind Sound Resonance Technique (MSRT)

MSRT is to generate resonance throughout the body by repetition of mental
sounds. This helps in revitalizing the internal energy in the body.

Sound according to Yoga

Sound is Spanda – Vibration.

It is a wave.
It can be audible (Ahata) or inaudible (Anahata). It is the quality of Akasa (Space)
Sabda Gunakam Akasam

Thus Sabda can travel though vacuum as well, like electromagnetic waves do. That
is what distinguishes the concept of sound in Yoga compared to physics. Yet, there
is a commonality that it travels as waves.
Thus the sound that is heard is Ahata, Anahata is the inner sound, the subtler
sound. Yogis hear Anahata inside their heart.
The spectrum of Sabdam, sound as postulated in Yoga is much broader and
comprehensive than the sound conceived by science.

Sound according to Science

Sound, accoding to science, is a form of energy. It moves as waves through
compressions and rarefractions.

Sound travels as compressions and rarefractions. Sound needs air (or a medium)
for its travel. The speed of sound varies with the media. The rarefractions and
compressions vibrate the ear drum and that is how we hear the sound. There are
two aspects of a sound wave.
1) Amplitude which corresponds to loudness, &
2) Frequency corresponding to pitch.
The amplitude is measured in mm. Higher the amplitude, greater is the loudness.
The number of cycles in a sound is called the frequency. Higher the frequency,
higher is the pitch, shrillness. The intensity of sound measured in decibels (db) is
directly proportional to the distance traveled.
When two waves are completely opposite –out of phase by 180 degrees (half
cycle).
At every point, two waves cancel each other. The result is completely silence.
When matching occurs in musical instruments, their resonance, fullness increases
due to increased amplitudes and melody.
Bhramari – repetition of a sound ‘M’ like the humming of a bee generates
resonance capable of bringing a fine massaging effect throughout the body.

Echo and Reverberation

Echo is single reflection

A single sound wave gets reflected again and again to produce reverberation.
Resonance

Resonance is matching of frequencies with the natural frequency of the body. The
concept of resonance can be well understood by the following example: - An army
was marching across a bridge. As they came out of the bridge, the bridge cracked
and collapsed. No floods, no tornedo, no fire. It was a shocking surprise. An in-
depth investigation and research brought out the phenomena of resonance.
When the frequency of the march matched with the natural frequency of the
bridge, there were violent oscillations due to increased amplitude which was
responsible for the collapse. That is how the rule ‘Break the steps when you cross a
bridge’, for the army emerged.

There is matching at every point of the two waves. There is hence doubling of
amplitudes of the resultant wave.
When the mantra is chanted with resonance the esoteric dimension emerges, pranic
flow starts. Mental waves build up a pattern. Understanding adds the proper
dimension growth and the feeling aspect brings bliss.

We use Maha Mrtyunjaya Mantra (MM) in MSRT and OM. It is a great mantra to
conquer the fear of death.

Bliss and its Quantification

Silence is Bliss. Greater the bliss, nearer we are to the ultimate. Bliss pervades
envelopes indwells everything.
An attempt is made to quantitatively describe bliss in Taittiriyopanisad at different
levels and hint that through the state of lesser desires and proper understanding we
can get more and more bliss. The following table illustrates the concept of bliss
and its quantification:-

The Mantras

The mantras are specially composed chants to bring about different patterns of
resonant waves to achieve the desired result. They are part of a broad science
called Tantra Sastra. Mantras and Yantras are the audio and visual tools of the
Tantra Sastra to achieve the desired result. Tantra itself is part and parcel of Purva
Mimamsa; the ritualistic, the operative part of the Vedas.

Every mantra has two dimensions – the exoteric and the esoteric
The exoteric is the external, gross aspects as massaging, relaxing or stimulating,
exciting effects in the physical body; strengthening of the vocal chords muscles,
voice culture and many more. The esoteric dimension refers to the changes in
Prana and mind intellect (by bringing the meaning) and the emotions (feelings).

Resolve : s<kLp (saìkalpa)

Resolve is a short, positive and clear statement with a minimum number of words,
repeated mentally preferably in one’s own mother language in the present
continuous tense. Resolve is repeated for 9 times with full faith, emphasis and
awareness.

The following are resolves which can be used:

・I am ever blissful.
・My immune system is very powerful.
・I am full of energy.
・I am more aware and efficient.
・I am achieving total health.
・I am successful in all that I undertake.
・I am a positive force for the evolution of others.
・I am awakening my spiritual potential.
・I am following yoga discipline in my daily life.

One can choose only one resolve according to his needs and inclinations. Resolve
could be any other thought but should be positive in content.

Although one can use the resolve for therapeutic purpose, it should rather be used
for a greater purpose, such as achieving total health or awakening creativity and
inherent potential. Thus, the purpose of resolve is not to fulfill desires, but to
influence and transform the whole life pattern, not only physically but also
mentally, emotionally, socially and spiritually.

It is for this reason that the use of resolve for the eradication of bad habits such as
smoking or drinking is not recommended. It is better to choose a resolve that will
change our whole personality so that we become more balanced, happy and
fulfilled.

For success, the resolve needs to be planted with strong willpower and feeling. It
should be planed when the mind is released and ready to accept and accept it.

Once the seed of resolve is planted deep in the subconscious, it gathers the vast
powerful directive forces of the mind in order to bring about its fruition. This deep
and powerful seed of resolve will eventually manifest itself again and again at a
conscious level and bring about changes in our personality. When resolve becomes
the powerful directive force, everything we do in life becomes successful.
