“Saklay”

Palakasan.

kumakaway.

Bang!, mabilis na tumakbo ang mga manlalaro. Hindi nagpadaig ang

dalawa niyang kaibigan.

Mateo's disability is portrayed not merely as a challenge but as a defining aspect that shapes his life experiences and interactions. His condition requires the use of a saklay, which becomes a symbol of his unique identity rather than a limitation. It influences how he is perceived by others, prompting both negative experiences, such as ridicule and bullying by classmates, and positive outcomes through the cultivation of deep empathy and resilience. This dynamic informs Mateo's interactions, as he responds to negativity with understanding and offers friendship, turning potential adversaries into allies, like in Jake's case. His disability also drives him to prove his capabilities, leading to academic excellence and a successful engineering career. Mateo's experiences illustrate that disability, while impacting life’s journey, can serve as a powerful motivator and framework for meaningful relationships and accomplishments .

Encouraged by Mateo, both characters join the race, embodying sportsmanship and personal aspiration. Despite the competitive setting, they remain focused on achieving personal goals and supporting one another, as seen when their camaraderie and Mateo's encouragement fuel their success. Benjie’s attainment of the gold medal and Jake’s silver medal demonstrate that while competition drives individual excellence, mutual support and collective encouragement render the victory more meaningful as it symbolizes not just personal achievement but the triumph of their friendship. This narrative aspect emphasizes that competition, when coupled with solidarity, results in comprehensive growth and shared celebration .

Education and perseverance are crucial elements in Mateo's life, contributing directly to his success despite initial physical challenges.
