Useful Tips Task 1
• Make sure you include an overview of what the chart, table or
diagram shows.
• You must write at least 150 words
• Organise the information into paragraphs with a clear theme for each
one
• Use your own words and avoid copying directly from the question
paper
• Avoid repeating use of the same vocabulary items as examiners are
looking for a wide range of vocabulary
• Write in prose, use academic words and expressions
Useful Tips Task 1
• The style is fairly formal in tone, avoid colloquial language. Use
vocabulary with a precise meaning
• Think about the logical connection between information and avoid
simply using ‘firstly’, ‘secondly’
• Focus on the key features or trends shown rather than listing every
detail
• Remember to use the correct verb tense to avoid confusion
Common Errors
• No overview given. (Band 5 is the highest for Task Achievement)
• Vocabulary copied from the question paper or the same vocabulary is
repeated throughout
• Little variety in sentence structure
• Information is not grouped into paragraphs with a clear theme
• Lack of variety of cohesive devices which affects the flow and
readability of information
• Too much focus on listing details rather than identifying significant
features
Common Errors Task 1
• Task 1 written as one paragraph which affects the logical progression
of the answer
• Including irrelevant information or drawing conclusions that cannot
be supported
• Language use is informal, inappropriate, imprecise which affects
clarity of answer
Useful Tips Task 2
• A clear stance is a must and is usually written in the introduction
which should be focused on the question and give an overview of the
essay.
• Write at least 250 words
• You must write in logically developed paragraphs that are focused on
one main idea and contain a topic sentence
• Copying the title will not be counted in the word count
• Aim to use a wide range of vocabulary and avoid too much repetition
• The style should be fairly formal and academic in tone

• Conclusion needs to sum up main points, contain no new points and
evaluate main ideas in essay
• Use complex sentence structures to make writing more interesting
• Include examples and evidence to support arguments
• Read the question carefully to identify the purpose of the essay
• Plan your ideas carefully and make sure you can support your
arguments
• Proofread your work for careless errors
Common Errors Task 2
• No clear introduction
• Essay is not organised into paragraphs which affects the progression
of the answer
• No clear topic sentence which means that the paragraphs may
contain a list of ideas that are not fully supported and developed
• Essay contains vague or general ideas that are not supported with
examples or evidence
• Answer may contain irrelevant information
• Incorrect or mechanical cohesive devices used (then, besides) or first,
second…
Common Errors
• The range of vocabulary is limited with repetition or unsuitable
language which is too informal
• Sentence structures lack variety and are too simple
• Conclusion is incomplete or contains new ideas
