Basic Concepts about Atoms

▪ An atom is the smallest uncharged particle.

▪ An atom contains a centrally located nucleus.

▪ The nucleus contains positively charged protons and neutral neutrons.

▪ The electrons revolve around the nucleus in fixed orbits called

electron shells or energy levels.

▪ An atom is electrically neutral.

▪ number of protons (+ ve charge) = number of electrons (- ve charge).

▪ Position of elements in the periodic table is based on their atomic number.

Structure of an Atom
Subatomic Particles
Atoms are made up of smaller particles known as sub-atomic particles.
Atomic number and Mass Number
Proton number ( Atomic number) (Z)

It is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.

Nucleon number ( Mass number) (A)

It is the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.

[Protons + neutrons= nucleon number or mass number]

• Number of protons = 3
• Number of electrons = 3
• Number of neutrons = 7-3 = 4
number of p+ = 17
number of e- = 18
number of n0 = 20
