Unit Topics
Nos.
Unit 1 Sensor Characteristics and Principles of Measurement
Classification of sensors, transducers and actuators. Units of information and
measurement. Input and output characteristics: Transfer function, Impedance
matching, Range, Span, I/O Full scale and Resolution. Accuracy, errors and
repeatability. Sensitivity. Hysteresis, non-linearity, saturation. Frequency
response, response time and bandwidth. Calibration, Excitation, Deadband and
reliability.

Unit 2 Principles of Sensing


Capacitive sensors, piezoelectric effect, pyroelectric effect, photo electric
effect, photoconducting effect, photovoltaic effect, magneto-mechanical effect
(magnetostriction), magneto-resistive effect, thermoelectric effect, thermo-
resistive effect (RTD, thermistor) and semiconductor thermal sensors.

Unit 3 Signal Conditioning


Input signal conditioning - offset, scaling, loading, isolation. Wheatstone
bridge, common mode rejection ratio, Instrumentation amplifier, isolation
amplifiers, charge amplifier, integrator and differentiator, filters, comparators.

Unit 4 Analog/Digital converters


Digital quantities, data converters and parameters, DACs-weighted resistor,
ladder network, characteristics, sources of error, ADCs-integrating type-dual
ramp, charge balance, non-integrating type, successive approximation, flash
type.
Unit 5 Data Acquisition and Communication
Microprocessor/Microcontroller for data acquisition. Polling and Interrupt
driven data acquisition. 2-wire and 4-wire data transmission. Data transmission
protocols (USB, CAN, RS232, RS485, I2C, SPI, 1-wire). Data visualization.
IEEE-1451 smart transducer standard.
