Map Design Guide
Maps are essential for all geographic studies and must be done CLEARLY, ACCURATELY and
NEATLY in order to be of maximum value. A good map is easily read and understood by
map readers. The following guide will help you to improve your maps.

LABELLING
1. Names could be labeled in the following order to avoid crowding and confusion. Generally,
places are labeled HORIZONTALLY.
a) Label EXACT locations first, for example, cities using a DOT in a precise location.
b) Next, label LINEAR features such as rivers, roads and boundaries. Label rivers
along their paths when possible.
c) Lastly, label AREAS, for example, provinces, countries or regions in a spot where
no other label is needed. Label areas WITHIN the area whenever possible.
2. Common abbreviations (short forms) may be used. (eg. PEI, USA)
3. NEVER Cursive write on a map. PRINT ONLY. Use different sizes of printing to show
places of greater importance.
COUNTRY PROVINCE City Water Body
4. Avoid using arrows and number codes to label maps.
5. DON’T underline names on a map unless there is a purpose for the underlining.
6. Label with a pen or dark sharpie.
7. PRINT your name, not your signature.

COLOUR
1. Colour map areas or features that need to be shown as different from other items.
2. Use LIGHT SHADES since they are more easily and quickly coloured and will not hide or
obscure your labeling. Colour as EVENLY as possible.
3. Avoid dark colours that hide map features.
4. When possible, select colours that resemble the mapped topic. Ex. Blue for water.
5. The colours and shades used in the key should match the map exactly.

MAP ESSENTIALS – 6 KEY FEATURES of a MAP

❑ A TITLE
❑ A KEY or LEGEND is necessary to explain symbols and COLOURS used on the map.
