UPDATED THEOLOGY OF THE BODY VOCABULARY
1. Theology of the Body - It is the study of what it means to be human, in light of
scripture’s revelation, as stated by Pope St. John Paul II which helps us to understand
how we were created in the image of God.
2. Spousal meaning of the body – It is our God-given call for self-giving love, which God
stamped into our bodies as male or female to love as he loves through a sincere and
total gift of self; the marital meaning of the body; the marital meaning of the body
3. Original innocence – The state of Adam and Eve prior to their knowledge of sin, filled
with the knowledge of God when their minds, hearts and bodies were perfectly
innocent
4. Original solitude – Refers to man’s first relationship to God before he is given a helper.
He realizes he is created in His image and likeness and how fundamentally different
he is from the animals.
5. Original nakedness –The state of original holiness, free from sin, means that
conscience is undamaged. The first experience of Adam and Eve when they were
naked without shame, before original sin, when lust did not exist, and all sexual
desires were pure.
6. Naked without shame - Nakedness that exists within the context of innocence and
pure freedom, apart from lust. This is what Adam and Eve experienced before the fall.
7. Original Sin –It refers to the state of woundedness we are born with, the damage in
our humanity and in the world caused by personal sin. The first sin of Adam and Eve,
when they distrusted God’s plan and chose their own will over the will of God.
8. Chastity - The virtue of Chastity is the habit of controlling sexual desire according to
will and reason and only acting on sexual desire within the confines of marriage which
is the only place this self-giving love is possible.
9. Sacramentality of the Body - The Sacramentality of the Body is the inherent ability of
the body to act as a visible sign of God's invisible love. We are able to make visible
through our actions and spoken beliefs the power of God and His role in our daily lives.
10. Love - a decision to “will the good of another” which involves a sincere gift of oneself
to others
11. Pride - A tendency within Adam and Eve (and all of us) to prefer our wills to the will of
God. This is the root of all moral evil in the world.
12. Concupiscence - a disordered desire; we seek fulfillment in things that can never
provide it
13. Original Man - The period of man’s existence as God created him (lived by Adam and
Eve) prior to original sin.
14. Historical Man - The period of man’s existence since the fall and ends with Christ’s
return.
15. Shame - a tendency to conceal one’s sexual value in order to help others see their
personal value. It reminds us of our dignity that must be protected.
16. Shameless - Flaunting the body without inhibitions or conscience. Acting shamelessly
reflects a false notion of sexual freedom and of the truth of the body
17. Original Happiness - the joy that Adam and Eve felt prior to the Fall
19. Second Creation Account - The second telling of the creation of the world in the book
of Genesis that focuses on the creation of man and woman as the pinnacle of all
creation.

Story of the Fall - Read carefully and learn the details of Genesis 2 & 3.

the LORD God formed a man

God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden

In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must
not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will
certainly die.”

The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep

while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with

flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib

The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones

and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”

Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame

The serpant came.

He lies t eve

. he took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed
fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

mSo the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,

“Cursed are you above all livestock

and all wild animals!

You will crawl on your belly

and you will eat dust

all the days of your life.

15 And I will put enmity

between you and the woman,

and between your offspring[i] and hers;

he will crush[ j] your head,

and you will strike his heel.”

To the woman he said,

“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;

with painful labor you will give birth to children.

Your desire will be for your husband,

and he will rule over you.”
