CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Time management was a fundamental skill that played a pivotal role in

students' academic journey. Effective time management not only enhanced
productivity but also influenced overall academic performance. However, the
lack of proper time management skills among students could lead to challenges
that hindered their success in school. This research focused on exploring the
strategies, challenges, and impact of poor time management on the academic
performance of Grade 10 students at SPCIHS.

Furthermore, understanding the strategies that students used to manage

their time effectively was crucial in identifying areas for improvement. By
examining the various methods and tools students employed to organize their
schedules and tasks, educators and parents could provide targeted support to
enhance students' time management skills. Additionally, recognizing the
challenges students faced in balancing academic responsibilities,
extracurricular activities, and personal commitments was essential in
developing tailored interventions to address these obstacles.

Additionally, the impact of inadequate time management on academic

performance was multifaceted, influencing students' grades, stress levels, and
overall well-being. By investigating how poor time management practices
affected the educational outcomes of Grade 10 students at SPCIHS, this
research aimed to highlight the significance of time management skills in
student success. Ultimately, the findings of this study informed the

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This study utilized Cyril Northcote Parkinson’s Law, ”Parkinson’s

Law”. Parkinson’s Law suggested that work will expand or contract to fill the
amount of time available for it. It, therefore, reflects the fact that people choose
their effort levels to be appropriate to the tasks at hand and the amount of time
they have available to accomplish those tasks. Parkinson’s Law was the
observation that the duration of tasks withi a public administration,
bureaucracy or officialdom expanded to fill their allotted time spans, regardless
of the amount of work to be done. With regard to the time made available to
accomplish a task, shorter time limits were said to lead to the setting of more
difficult goals, and longer time limits were said to lead to easier goals. Since
performance on work tasks had been repeatedly shown to be an increasing
function of the difficulty of one's accepted goals (see Locke, 1968), it
followed, therefore, that time limits should also affect performance through
their influence on goal difficulty.

Parkinson's law was not a fundamental concept of science. Instead, it

was an observation of a common phenomenon that many individuals had
encountered. Parkinson's original description of it could help explain why
organizations and bureaucracy grow. It could, however, also be a useful
method to consider different kinds of work, such as personal productivity.

Additionally, procrastination—leaving chores until the last minute—is

another effect of Parkinson's law. The fact that you had lots of time to
complete an assignment may initially make you feel relieved, but you may end
up procrastinating as much as possible.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

INDEPENDENT DEPENDENT

•time management •academic achievements

•grades
•planning
•completion of assignments
•organizing ---------
•participation in class
•prioritizing their tasks and
•exam scores
responsibilities
•overall academic success

In summary, effective time management hinges on a set of skills and

practices, serving as the independent variables. Conversely, the outcome of
inadequate time management, termed the dependent variable, is influenced by
the absence of these skills. As individuals enhance their time management
abilities, the likelihood of encountering poor time management diminishes.
This relationship operates inversely: strengthening independent variables
mitigates the dependent variable. Good time management encompasses aspects
such as strategic planning, streamlined workflows, and clear task prioritization.
In contrast, deficiencies in these areas, including poor planning,
disorganization, and haphazard task prioritization, contribute to the
manifestation of poor time management.

Students : Strategies, Challenges, and Impact in Academic Performance of Grade
10 Students in SPCIHS"

The data collection were conducted to 50 students in grade 10 at SPCIHS.

However we only surveyed 47 students. 28 females and 20 males answered the
survey. Of the 28 women who answered, they were aged 15, 16, and 17. Those
who responded at the age of 15 were 14, 16 were 10, and 17 were 4. And out of
the 20 men who answered, they were aged 15–16. Those who answered 15 years
old were 5, and those who answered 16 years old were 12, and there were three
who did not put their age. Someone else didn't put their gender; maybe that was
why other people didn't put their gender because they didn't feel comfortable
putting it, or maybe they were lazy.

Topic that discussed the effects of poor time management on the academic
performance of students, particularly those in the 10th grade. Many students
struggled to balance their studies with their day-to-day lives, which could have a
negative impact on their academic achievement.

Poor time management can have detrimental long-term effects on students' academic and personal development, such as consistent underperformance, chronic stress, and reduced self-confidence. It fosters habits of procrastination which may lead to ongoing academic difficulties, reducing future educational and career opportunities. Besides academics, poor time management often impairs personal life, contributing to negative mental health outcomes, strained relationships, and diminished personal growth potential . Addressing these issues early through skill development can mitigate such adverse effects and promote a more balanced, productive lifestyle .

Effective time management positively impacts academic performance by enhancing students' ability to plan, prioritize, and organize their tasks and responsibilities, thus improving their productivity and academic achievements. This results in higher grades, timely assignment completion, increased class participation, and better exam scores . In contrast, poor time management leads to missed deadlines, increased stress, and a sense of being overwhelmed, which negatively affect academic performance .

External distractions significantly hamper the time management practices of Grade 10 students at SPCIHS by diverting focus from academic tasks to outside stimuli, thereby exacerbating challenges in prioritization and task completion . Students often grapple with overcoming these distractions, which stem from social interactions, technology use, and personal commitments, leading to procrastination and ineffective time allocation. Addressing these external factors through strategic interventions is essential for improving students' time management capabilities and academic outcomes .

The theoretical framework applying Parkinson's Law to time management issues among Grade 10 students suggests that the time available for a task influences the perceived effort needed to complete it. Shorter deadlines tend to lead to higher goal setting, encouraging more effective and intensive work behaviors, while longer deadlines encourage goal easing, promoting procrastination and inefficiency . This framework helps explain why students with poor time management struggle with their studies, as more time may lead them to delay work, resulting in rushed and subpar academic performance .

Teachers can alleviate students' time management challenges by optimizing classroom structures, balancing workload effectively, and enhancing lesson planning to minimize student anxiety about time management . Parents are advised to guide children in developing time management skills, helping them plan schedules and complete assignments without stress or distraction . Both can provide a supportive environment that facilitates the acquisition of time management skills, reducing the negative impact of poor time management on students' academic performance .

Proposed strategies include creating structured schedules, setting clear and achievable goals, reducing distractions, and utilizing time management tools such as planners, calendars, and apps. These approaches help students make better use of their time, thereby enhancing productivity and academic performance . Educators and parents can aid in implementing these strategies by providing guidance and support tailored to individual student needs .

Parkinson's Law contributes to procrastination by suggesting that tasks tend to expand to fill the time available for their completion. This means that when students perceive they have ample time to complete an assignment, they might feel relieved initially but may end up delaying or procrastinating as much as possible . Consequently, this impacts their productivity and academic outcomes by increasing the likelihood of last-minute work, heightened stress, and potential poor performance .

The research indicates subtle gender and age differences in responses to time management challenges. Slight variations exist in the surveyed students’ prioritization and organizational behaviors, where females, who composed the majority of respondents, potentially face different external pressures and distractions compared to their male counterparts. Additionally, age differences, with older students possibly experiencing greater academic or extracurricular obligations, might further influence how time management issues impact academic performance . However, the study suggests a need for further detailed exploration into how these demographic factors specifically affect time management practices .

The findings from the study on Grade 10 students at SPCIHS provide a robust basis for further research into time management by identifying key strategies, challenges, and their impacts on academic performance. These insights can guide future studies to explore additional dimensions of time management and its broader implications across different educational settings. Additionally, the study highlights the need for effective interventions and curricula that can be applied and tested in diverse contexts to foster better time management skills among students .
