In Space

space excited spaceship lift-off explode astronaut

11,000 teachers wanted to travel into space, but Christa McAuliffe was the
first. Christa loved learning about space and she was very excited about
travelling on the spaceship, Challenger.
The lift-off of Challenger was on 28 January, 1986. It was a cold day, but the
weather was good and Challenger was ready. Thousands of people waited for
the lift-off to begin. At last ... 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. Challenger lifted off into
the air and everybody was very happy.
But then a terrible thing happened. Challenger exploded after 74 seconds in
the air! Christa and the other six astronauts on Challenger died in space.
