ATTENTION This product is grounded through the DIN rail to the dedicated
intrinsic safety ground. Use zinc plated yellow-chromate steel
DIN rail to assure proper grounding. The use of other DIN rail
materials (e.g. aluminum, plastic, etc.) that can corrode, oxidize,
or are poor conductors, can result in improper or intermittent
grounding.
41167
2. Hook the lip on the rear of the adapter onto the top of the DIN rail,
and rotate the module onto the rail.
41166
3. Press the adapter down onto the DIN rail until flush.
The locking tab should snap into position and lock the module to the
DIN rail.
ATTENTION Make certain that the adapter and fiber modules are secured
together with DIN rail anchors. Failure to do so may result in
the loss of communications and/or cause damage to the
modules.
4. If the adapter does not snap into position, use a screwdriver or similar
device to move the locking tab down while pressing the module flush
onto the DIN rail. Release the locking tab to lock the module in place.
If necessary, push up on the locking tab to lock.
41168
7. Once attached to the DIN rail, slide fiber modules to the left to mate
with the adapter.
41169
8. Make sure the last fiber module has its backplane connector cover in
place.
IMPORTANT You can only attach two media modules to the repeater
adapter. If you exceed the module limit, you may cause
damage to the adapter or fiber modules and void the IS
certification.

Electrostatic Charge
Protect the system against electrostatic charge. Post a sign near this module:
Attention! Avoid electrostatic charge. For your convenience, a sign which
can be cut out is included in this installation instruction.
Removal and Insertion Under Power
WARNING The adapter is designed so you can remove and insert it under
power. However, take special care when removing or inserting
modules in an active process. I/O attached to any module being
removed or inserted can change states due to its input/output
signal changing conditions.
If you insert or remove the terminal base while backplane power
is on, an electrical arc can occur. This could cause an explosion
in hazardous location installations.
Be sure that power is removed or the area is nonhazardous
before proceeding.

5. If you are using the spring terminals of the plug, insert a screwdriver
into the slot and carefully pry until the spring clamp opens to accept the
wire.
WARNING Do not use any unused terminals on this adapter. Using these
terminals as supporting terminals can result in damage to the
module and/or unintended operation of your system.
Make certain that you power this adapter with an intrinsically
safe power supply. Do not exceed the values listed in the
specifications for this adapter.
Do not remove or replace a module when power is applied.
Interruption of the bus can result in unintended operation or
machine motion.
If you connect or disconnect wiring while the field-side power is
on, an electrical arc can occur. This could cause an explosion in
hazardous location installations. Be sure that power is removed
or the area is nonhazardous before proceeding.
IMPORTANT Make sure all fiber modules are attached and secured prior to
applying intrinsically safe power to the adapter. Failure to do
so may cause damage to the adapter and modules.

Exceeding the module limit on a ControlNet Ex repeater adapter system, specifically attaching more than two media modules, can lead to damage to the adapter or fiber modules. This action might also void the IS (Intrinsically Safe) certification, undermining the safety and compliance of the entire system in hazardous environments .
When installing ControlNet Ex modules in a Zone 1 environment, a suitable metal enclosure must be provided to ensure the modules are not exposed to the environment. It is important to only connect ControlNet Ex adapters to other intrinsically safe system modules to maintain the integrity of the intrinsically-safe backplane. Additionally, the modules cannot be used in an intrinsically safe environment after exposure to non-intrinsically safe signals .
The installation instructions ensure compliance with EC directives by outlining specific measures, such as using only intrinsically safe backplane connections and enclosing all modules in suitable metal enclosures. Key elements covered include protections against environmental exposure and adherence to the norms for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), which are essential for safe and compliant deployment in EC regions .
Using fiber optic cables with metal shields in ControlNet Ex systems necessitates specific grounding requirements. The metal shield must be connected to a dedicated intrinsic safety ground either in the non-hazardous or hazardous location, depending on system configuration. This grounding is crucial for maintaining intrinsic safety and preventing unintended paths for electrical currents, which could compromise safety .
The 'entity concept' allows interconnection of intrinsically safe apparatus with associated apparatus that have not been specifically examined together as a system by ensuring that the approved values of the associated apparatus (Voc and Isc or Vt and It) are less than or equal to the Vmax and Imax of the intrinsically safe apparatus. Furthermore, the capacitance (Ca) and inductance (La) of the associated apparatus must be greater than the total wiring capacitance (Ci + Ccable) and inductance (Li + Lcable) of the intrinsically safe apparatus .
The visual indicators on the 1797-RPA module provide critical diagnostic information on the power and operational status of the module. For example, a steady green light indicates normal operation, while an alternating red/green flash suggests start-up or reset conditions. These indicators help in quickly diagnosing system issues, such as power faults or operational errors, thereby facilitating maintenance and ensuring continued system safety .
ControlNet Ex equipment needs to meet various certification standards, such as the FM C1. No.3600:1998 and FM C1. No.3610:1999, which outline general requirements for electrical equipment in hazardous locations and intrinsically safe apparatus design. These standards influence system design by dictating the need for specific protective measures, such as enclosure specifications and intrinsic safety parameters, ensuring equipment can safely function in environments prone to explosions or fire hazards .
The operational temperature range for the ControlNet Ex system is between -20°C and +70°C. This range is significant as it ensures that the system functions safely and effectively within these environmental constraints, preserving the integrity and reliability of both the hardware and the intrinsic safety design in potentially hazardous areas .
The ControlNet Ex tap serves as a critical connection point within the system for attaching coaxial trunk cables. Direct connection to the module without additional cables is required, and the total length of the coax trunk cable is constrained based on the number of connected ControlNet Ex taps. Installation requirements ensure signal integrity and maintain the safety certification of the system .
Avoiding electrostatic charging is crucial in the installation of ControlNet Ex systems to prevent potential ignition sources in hazardous areas. Measures to prevent electrostatic charging include posting signs warning against electrostatic charge and ensuring protective measures against electrostatic buildup, such as grounding conductive parts, are implemented during installation .
