Osmosis and Reverse Osmosis Explained

The document is an assignment by Hamza Hameed from the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences, focusing on physical and analytical chemistry. It discusses osmosis as the natural movement of water through a semi-permeable membrane and reverse osmosis as an artificial process for water purification. The assignment also mentions molecular sieves and membranes, though details on these topics are not provided in the excerpt.

ASSIGNMENT 01
NAME : HAMZA HAMEED
DEPARTMENT : CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
ROLL NO : BS-23-MB-107100

PHYSICAL AND ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

Question#1:

Write a detailed note on the following

topics:-

a) Osmosis and reverse osmosis:

Osmosis and reverse osmosis are two related

processes involving the movement of solvent molecules
through a semi-permeable membrane.

Osmosis :
Osmosis is the natural movement of water molecules
from a region of low solute concentration to a region
of high solute concentration through a semi-
permeable membrane. This process is vital for various
biological functions, such as water absorption in plant
roots and gaseous exchange in cells .
Reverse Osmosis :

Reverse osmosis, on the other hand, is an artificial

process where pressure is applied to overcome
osmotic pressure, forcing pure water to flow from a
region of high solute concentration to a region of
low solute concentration through a semi-permeable
membrane. This technology is commonly used for
water purification, removing ions, minerals, chemicals,
and impurities from water, making it suitable for
drinking and industrial purposes .

b) Molecular sieves and membranes:
