WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU COME FOR AN ULTRASOUND SCAN
BEFORE
• For abdominal scan which needs to visualize the Gall bladder, etc. will need fasting forat
least 8 hours.
• For Pelvic ultrasound, you will need to drink at least 1 litre of water or more and inform the
technician when your bladder is full. (when you want to visit the washroom). You willonly visit
the washroom once your ultrasound is done.
ON ARRIVAL
• Once you are in the Ultrasound room, you may be asked by the Technician to sign a
consent form.
• The Technician may ask you to remove clothing from the area being scanned or to change
into a gown.
DURING
• The Technician will request you to lie on the Ultrasound bed.
• A water-based gel is applied to your skin to help the images become clear. There will bea
small device used to spread the gel around the area of interest while images are
recorded.
• According to the requested examination, you might be having your procedure for 10 to20
minutes and sometimes longer during special procedures such as Doppler scan.
AFTER
• Once your scan is done, the Technician will provide you with a tissue to wipe the regionof
interest.
• You will then be asked to dress up and wait for your results.
• If you are from outside doctors, your results will be placed inside an envelope and given to you
to take to your doctor. If you are from in-house doctors, you will be asked to returnto the doctor
while your report will be sent directly through our system.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
• Fasting before an examination will help your gall bladder get distended so the
Technicians can give a proper diagnosis. This also helps to reduce the amount of gas in the
abdomen for better visualization of structures.
• Drinking at least 1 litre of water to fill up your bladder will help the technician visualizethe
uterus. The urine bladder acts as a window to visualize the uterus that is situated
posteriorly.
RISK
• Ultrasound has been used since the 1950s and several follow-up studies from that time
have not shown a link between ultrasound and any negative health effects.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU COME FOR AN X-RAY
BEFORE
• No preparation will be needed.
• To see and Immigration- accredited GP prior and bring all relevant immigration
documentation with you including photo ID (for immigration x-rays)
ON ARRIVAL
• On the day, we may ask you to change into a gown and give you somewhere safe to keepyour
belongings.
• Before imaging, the technician will talk you through the process to make sure youare
comfortable.
• Once you are in the x-ray room, you may be asked by the Technician to sign a consent
form.
• You may be asked to take off any jewelry that could interfere with the procedure.
• Parents can sit with children who are being imaged.
DURING
Depending on the part of your body being examined, you may be asked to undress, remove alljewelry
and wear a hospital gown. During the basic procedure:
• The radiographer will instruct you in positioning for the x-ray. You may be asked to standup, lie
down or sit down.
• The radiographer will place you between the X-ray machine and the imaging device that
captures the X-rays being transmitted through that part of your body.
• The radiographer may shield parts of your body with a lead apron. This is to reduce therisk of
unnecessary exposure to radiation.
• The radiographer will need to touch you to position your body correctly for each picture.
• The radiographer operates the controls while each image is taken. To do this, they will go
outside the examination room.
• You may be asked to hold your breath for a couple of seconds as each picture is takenso
that the breathing movement doesn’t blur the images.
AFTER
After the x-ray, you can get dressed (if you change your clothes) and wait for further instructions.A
radiologist will interpret the x-ray images. The results are usually sent to your doctor, so you will need
to make a follow-up appointment.

RISK
• Radiation
Radiation doses from X-rays are usually very small. There is a very small (negligible) increase in your
risk of developing cancer within 10 years of the x-ray examination (less than 0.01 per centincrease). It
is important to try and limit the number of X-rays you get over your life.
• Pregnancy and x-ray
As stated above, if you think you might be pregnant, you need to let us know before your procedure.
Exposure to radiation should be avoided during pregnancy. If an X-ray is really
needed, this is always weighed against your individual risk and would be discussed with you
before any examination.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU COME FOR A CT SCAN
BEFORE
Depending on your scan, you might need:
For Contrast Study (CT with a medicine)
• A blood test before your appointment (to check kidney function)
• Have a preparation.
• Avoid certain medications prior to your scan.
• Take a beta-blocker prior to your cardiac scan.
• Fast (not eat) before your scan.
• Refrain from drinking caffeinated drinks prior to your cardiac scan.
• Do Not smoke for two hours prior to your cardiac scan.
• Bring your inhaler if you are asthmatic.
• Avoid physical exercise on the day of your cardiac scan.
• Follow a 24-hour diet and laxative regime (for a CT Colonography).
• A revised 24-hour diet without laxatives or a barium mixture to drink with meals overthree days.
ON ARRIVAL
• Before your scan, the radiographer will discuss the paperwork and explain the
procedure in detail. The Radiographer will ask you to change into a gown and give you
somewhere safe to keep your belongings.
• Once you are in the CT scan room, you may be asked by the Technician to sign a consent
form.
• You can bring a relative or friend as a support person, particularly if you need help
moving or getting changed, or just for moral support, however, they will need to wait
outside the examination room during your procedure.
DURING
Generally, the procedure includes the following:
• You will be asked to undress and wear a hospital gown. You must remove all metal
objects including jewelry.
• You lie down on the scanner table. The radiographer may use straps and foam pillows to
position your body and help keep you still.
• You may be given an intravenous injection of an iodinated contrast medium (a type of dye) to
help produce better images. This substance may cause a strange warm feelingthat lasts for
a few seconds, a funny metallic taste in the mouth or the sensation that you have ‘wet’
yourself.
• The table slides into the circular hole in the machine.
• Depending on the body part and the condition being investigated, a number of imagesmay
be taken as the table moves in and out of the circular hole.
• The ring inside the gantry moves in a circle around you as it takes the X-ray images. Each
revolution (turning) of the ring takes less than a second and there may be a number of
revolutions depending on the examination.
• Lie very still. This is very important, as movement will blur the images. You may be askedto hold
your breath for a few seconds while the CT machine takes the images.
• The equipment makes clicks and buzzes while taking the images. Don’t be alarmed –this
is normal.
• Depending on the type of medical investigation, the CT scan may take anywhere from afew
minutes to half an hour or more.
AFTER
• You may be asked to wait while the radiographer reviews the images. In some cases, more
images must be taken. Once the radiographer has enough good images, you can dress and
leave when the radiographer says you can.
• You may need to remain in the department for a short period after the procedure if youhave
received the iodinated contrast material. The medically qualified radiologist assesses the
scans. The results are usually sent to your referring doctor, so you will needto make a follow-
up appointment.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Your doctor may want to check your kidneys with a blood test prior to the scan, but please let usknow if
you have any kidney problems so we can assess whether to use the contrast agent. We also need to
know if you are or think you could be pregnant.
RISK
• Radiation
CT scanning does use X-rays, so you will be exposed to a low dose of radiation during the scan.
The risk of developing cancer from it is so small that it can’t be reliably measured.
• Contrast
During a CT scan, contrast is used to show blood vessels, kidneys, and other organs
more clearly. There may be instances where patients may react to contrast agents suchas
feeling nauseated, anditchiness, however, this is very rare.
Pregnancy and CT
Exposure to radiation should be avoided during pregnancy. If a scan is really needed,this
is always weighed against your individual risk and would be discussed with you before
any examination.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU COME FOR AN MRI SCAN
BEFORE
Preparation
• The technician will book your appointment via email.
• You will be given a checklist to fill out and send back to the technician.
• After verifying your checklist, the technician will give you an appointment time and date.
• You will need to come in light clothing with no metals attached.
ON ARRIVAL
• The Radiology receptionist will receive your form after going through our CS team at
reception.
• The technician will be notified.
• The technician will then lead you to the examination room.
• Once you are in the MRI room, you may be asked by the Technician to sign a consent
form.
DURING
Generally, an MRI involves the following:
• You will be asked to remove all metal objects, including wristwatches, keys and
jewelry. These items must be left outside the scan room.
• In most cases, you are asked to undress and put on a cotton gown.
• You are instructed to lie on the scanner’s table. The table then slides under the magnet.
• It is important to lie very still. Movement will blur or distort the pictures.
• While it is in operation, the MRI scanner makes noises such as knocks, loud bangs and
clicks. (You will be offered earplugs)
• The scan may take up to an hour, depending on the nature of the investigation.
AFTER
• You will be asked to wait for your CD which contains images of the examination.
• The technician will advise you on the turnaround time for your report.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Metallic items
MRIs use powerful magnets, so it’s essential that you take off any metallic things that couldinterfere
with the scanner’s magnetic field and make the scan unsafe.
You will need to remove any:
• Watches
• Jewelry
• Hair clips
• Zips
• Underwire bras
• Hearing aids
• Makeup and hairspray (as these can contain small metal particles)It’s
also essential that you let us know if you have any of the following:
• Cardiac stents
• Aneurysm clips
• Heart valves
• A pacemaker or implanted cardiac defibrillator (ICD)
• Metal in your brain or head region
• Cochlear or Stapedectomy implants
• Insulin pump or glucose monitor for diabetics.
• A neurostimulator or pain medication pump
• Metal fragments or fillings in your eye
• Metal fragments or shrapnel injuries to any part of your body
• Metal joint replacements
• Any other metallic implants or electronic devices in your body.
If you have any of the above, or if you are pregnant, we will assess if an MRI is safe for you.
RISK
MRI is safe, has no harmful effects and doesn’t use any ionizing radiation. You will not feel the
magnetic field or radio waves, though it is not uncommon to feel warm during your scan, or to
experience some mild involuntary muscle twitching.
SCAN

it acts like a window.
Brief Description:
Ultrasound pelvis is an examination that helps visualize any abnormality of the Uterus, Ovariesand
surrounding structures.

Preparation:
If the patient is less than 12 weeks, she will need to come with a full bladder which means the

abnormality.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
At times, our Radiologist will recommend a contrast study which is the use of medicineduring the CT
scan for better visualization of organs and pathologies.
Why is contrast needed?
Contrast materials help distinguish or "contrast" selected areas of the body from surrounding
tissue. This helps physicians diagnose medical conditions by improving thevisibility of specific
organs, blood vessels, or tissues.
Things to consider when coming for a contrast study:
• Patient to be in a fasting state.
• Patient to withhold any medication.
• Patients should get their creatinine level checked first before coming for the
examination.
• Patients should inform the Technician and the Radiologists if they have any allergies. If
allergies pre-meds areto be prescribed.
