Generating Set Earthing Recommendations
A] The Generating set and all associated equipment, control and switch gear panels must be
earthed before the set is put into operation.
Improper Earthing may lead to major accident, even loss of life. It may lead to equipment
failure because of lightening, Genset may catch fire due to lack of Earthing.
B] FOUR earth pits are required as per Indian Body Earth Pits GENSET Neutral Earth Pits
Electricity rules or local electricity board.
TWO separate earth pits for BODY (ONE
from the Alternator / Engine and the other
from the Canopy).
TWO separate earth pits for NEUTRAL.
Neutral earth pits and Body earth pits should be
located at opposite sides of the canopy.
Pit to Pit distance should be minimum 2000 mm.
C] Connect the two Neutral Earth Plates to form a Neutral
Neutral Earth Grid.
Similarly connect the Body Earth Plates to form a
Body Earth Grid.
NOTE: Body and Neutral Earth Grids should never
be interconnected.

* For Gensets with AVMs, the Engine / Alternator
Body Earthing MUST be done at the Engine /
Alternator body and NOT at the base rail.

D] Copper or GI strips of suitable size may be used for earthing. Please note that for normal soil, earth
resistance should not exceed 1 ohm.
Ensure that Earthing checks are conducted once every year.
E] DESIGN OF A STANDARD EARTHING PIT
Ensure watering through the
Wire Mesh/Funnel regularly
Charcoal + Salt in
alternate layers
