II. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ACTIVITY
Preliminary Activities
The training workship held in the school’s Sceince Laboratory started
at 8:15 AM. The national anthem was conducted by Ma’am Noellen Loa-e
followed by the prayer given by Ma’am Esther Bantasan and a Zumba
dance led by Sir Noel Badecao which served as an energizing warm-up for
the morning proceedings.
During the Training Workshop
Mr. Aristotle Calical started the activity with a tongue twister of “ The
House that Jack Built.” After the oral reading, he checked the commonly
mispronounced words like the homonyms, “cat, cot, cut” and stated that
importance of being exposed with the proper use of language thus for the
training workshop, the objectives were to observe correct pronunciation
of critical vowel and consonant sounds, pronounce the correct
pronunciation fo vowel and consonant sounds, observe staircase
intonation patters, transcribe the phonetic symbols and words and blend
words and sentence in the given activities. Mr. Calical presented the
different critical vowel sounds namely the various monophthong and
diphthongs. Oral exercises were done as each critical vowel and
consonant sounds were articulated and discussed. This was followed by
another pronunciation exercise with its transcription shown after. A
transcribing activity then tested the teachers’ knowledge on transcribing
words based on the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols. After
the morning break, the speaker discussed the basic blending rules. He
advised that in speaking, sentences would be treated as one word with
many syllables. This means that we should imagine that the words are
not words by syllables.
Staircase intonation was the main topic in the afternoon session. The
speaker presented tips on what to do with out mouth to sound like an
American. This includes not speaking word by word, connecting words to
form sounds groups and using staircase but it also makes you sound
much confident. Series of the intonation exercises proceeded like
practicing with nonsense syllables, statements intonation with nouns,
pronouns, statement versus question intonation, emotional question
intonation and sentence intonation. Mainly, there are four reasons for
using intonation which include information, opinion, contrast and can’t.
finally, inflection, a change in the form of word to express grammatical
function was tackled. The participants interpreted the meaning of the
sentences and questions posted based on its inflection.
Post training-workshop
The school principal stressed the need of proper pronunciation for
easy communication in her remarks before the session came to a
conclusion. The activity ended with a closing prayer by Ma’am Esther
Bantasan.
III. PROBLEMS, ISSUES, CONCERNS
The training workshop was conducted smoothly. All the objectives
were met since all the topics were covered.

evaluation on the smooth flow of the training-workshop.

-apply the proper way of pronouncing words in my teaching
endeavor
-Exercise the given knowledge to help improve my speaking
skills
-Correctly pronounce words inside and outside the classroom
and thus reinforcing correct pronunciation of words at the same
time teach the lessons under my field.
