INTRODUCTION

Golf has become one of the most popular sports worldwide, and golf courses have become the
main venues for players to showcase their skills and enjoy the game. Golf course architecture plays an
essential role in creating the perfect golf course experience.
In the Philippines, golf courses have also gained popularity, and there are some fantastic golf
courses available. Golf course architecture refers to the design of the course layout, the construction
of the greens, the placement of hazards, and the overall aesthetics of the course.
A golf course architect considers various factors when designing a course, including the
terrain, climate, and available resources. The primary goal is to create a challenging yet enjoyable golf
course that appeals to players of all skill levels. In the Philippines, golf has become an increasingly
popular sport, and there are several high-quality golf courses available.

One such golf course is the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club, located in
Carmona, Cavite. The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus, one of the most renowned golfers of all
time. The course is known for its challenging layout and beautiful scenery, with lakes and trees
creating a serene atmosphere.

Another notable golf course in the Philippines is the Orchard Golf and Country Club in
Dasmariñas, Cavite. The course was designed by Gary Player, another legendary golfer. The course is
set amidst rolling hills, and the layout is designed to challenge players of all skill levels. The club has
hosted several international golf tournaments, including the Asian Golf Circuit and the Philippine
Open.

In Cebu, the Mactan Island Golf Club is also a popular destination for golf enthusiasts. The
course was designed by David Graham and Gary Panks and features a tropical layout with views of
the ocean. The course has several challenges, including water hazards and bunkers, making it a
favorite among both locals and tourists.

The Riviera Golf and Country Club in Silang, Cavite, is another notable golf course in the
Philippines. The course was designed by Fred Couples, a former Masters champion, and features a
beautiful layout set against the backdrop of Mount Makiling. The course is known for its challenging
greens, water hazards, and sand bunkers, making it a favorite among experienced players.
Golf course architecture plays a critical role in creating the perfect golf course experience. In
the Philippines, golf courses have become increasingly popular, and there are several high-quality golf
courses available. These courses are designed to challenge players of all skill levels while providing a
serene and beautiful atmosphere. Whether you are a seasoned pro or a beginner, the Philippines has
something to offer every golf enthusiast.

DESIGN PARAMETERS IN DESIGNING A GOLF COURSE

Designing a golf course is a complex process that involves a range of factors, including site
selection, terrain, climate, vegetation, and more. Some of the key design parameters that architects
and designers consider when creating a golf course include:

 Site Selection: The first step in designing a golf course is selecting the site. This includes
considering factors such as accessibility, land use, topography, and the surrounding
environment.

 Terrain: The terrain of the golf course is a crucial design parameter that can greatly influence
the course's overall design. Golf course designers typically work with natural contours of the
land, incorporating hills, valleys, and water features to create a challenging and visually
appealing layout.

 Climate: The climate of the region where the golf course will be built is another critical
design parameter. The designer must consider factors such as average rainfall, temperature,
wind, and sunlight when creating a course that can be played year-round.

 Vegetation: The vegetation on the golf course is another important design parameter. The
type of grass, trees, and other vegetation used can have a significant impact on the course's
overall appearance, playability, and maintenance requirements.

 Tee and Green Placement: The placement of tees and greens is an essential design parameter
that can impact the overall difficulty and strategy of the course. Designers must consider
factors such as distance, hazards, and terrain when determining where to place each tee and
green.

 Hazards: Hazards, such as bunkers, water hazards, and roughs, are an essential design
parameter in creating a challenging and exciting golf course. Designers must strategically
place hazards to create risk-reward scenarios and ensure that golfers must use their skills to
navigate the course.

 Accessibility: Finally, accessibility is an essential design parameter for golf courses.

Designers must ensure that the course is accessible to players of all abilities, with appropriate
tee placement and handicap-accessible facilities.
Overall, designing a golf course requires a deep understanding of the game of golf and a range of
factors that can influence the course's design. By considering these design parameters, golf course
designers can create courses that are both challenging and enjoyable for players of all skill levels.

SPACES AND STRUCTURES IN DESIGNING A GOLF COURSE

Golf course requires careful consideration of several factors, including the layout of the holes,
the terrain and landscape, the location and design of hazards, and the placement of tee boxes,
fairways, greens, and bunkers. In terms of required spaces, building, or structures, some of the key
components of a golf course design include:
 Clubhouse: This is the main building on the course, which typically houses the pro
shop, locker rooms, restaurant or bar, and other amenities for golfers and visitors.

 Tee boxes: These are the starting points for each hole, and they need to be situated at
different locations and elevations to provide a variety of playing experiences for
golfers of different skill levels.

 Fairways: These are the long, straight stretches of grass that connect the tee boxes to
the greens. They need to be designed to accommodate different shot types and
distances, as well as to account for hazards such as water or sand traps.

 Greens: These are the small, manicured areas where the holes are located. They need
to be designed to be challenging but fair, with slopes and undulations that test a
golfer's skill and accuracy.

 Bunkers: These are the sand traps that are strategically placed around the course to
catch errant shots. They need to be designed to be visually appealing and challenging,
without being too difficult or unfair.

 Water hazards: These are the lakes, ponds, and streams that are incorporated into the
course design. They need to be situated in a way that provides a challenge for golfers
while also enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the course.

 Cart paths: These are the paved or gravel paths that golf carts use to move around
the course. They need to be designed to provide easy access to all areas of the course,
while also minimizing disruption to the natural landscape.
The design of a golf course requires a balance of aesthetics, functionality, and
challenge, and it is important to work with experienced architects and designers who can
help bring all these elements together in a cohesive and engaging way.

SETBACK AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS IN DESIGNING A GOLF

COURSE IN THE PHILIPPINES

According to the National Building Code of the Philippines (NBCP), golf courses are
considered recreational facilities and are subject to certain setback requirements and design
considerations. Here are some of the key requirements and considerations:

b. 5-meter setback from any adjacent property line.

 Maximum Height:
a. The maximum height of any structure within the golf course shall not exceed 15 meters
above the established grade.
 Access and Circulation:
a. Access to the golf course must be provided by a minimum 6-meter-wide all-weather access
road.
b. Parking areas should be provided for golfers and guests.

 Landscaping and Drainage:

a. A minimum of 50% of the golf course area should be planted with grass, trees, and other
vegetation.
b. Drainage should be designed to prevent flooding and erosion.

 Environmental Protection:
a. The golf course should be designed to protect natural features such as trees, bodies of
water, and natural drainage courses.
