a) Explain the following terms as used in introduction to the internet:

i) DNS (Domain Name Server): A DNS server is a computer that translates domain
names into IP addresses. Domain names are the easy-to-remember addresses of
websites, such as [Link] IP addresses are the unique numerical addresses of
computers on the internet.

ii) Web hosting: Web hosting is a service that provides space on a server for storing
website files. When someone visits a website, their computer sends a request to the
web server, which then sends back the website files. Web hosting companies provide
a variety of hosting plans, so businesses and individuals can choose the plan that
best meets their needs.

iii) URL (Uniform Resource Locator): A URL is the address of a web page or other
resource on the internet. URLs start with the protocol http:// or [Link] followed by the
domain name and the path to the resource. For example, the URL for the Google
homepage is [Link]

iv) TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol): TCP/IP is a suite of

protocols that govern communication on the internet. TCP/IP is responsible for
breaking down data into packets, transmitting them across the internet, and
reassembling them at the destination.

v) Hyperlink: A hyperlink is a link to another web page or resource. Hyperlinks are

typically blue and underlined, and when you click on one, your web browser will open
the linked page or resource. Hyperlinks are what make the World Wide Web
possible, as they allow users to easily navigate from one page to another.

b) Discuss client/server architecture.

Client/server architecture is a type of network architecture in which computers are

divided into two categories: clients and servers. Clients are computers that request
resources from servers, while servers are computers that provide resources to
clients.

In the context of web development, the client is typically a web browser, and the
server is a web server. When a user visits a website, their web browser sends a
request to the web server for the website's files. The web server then sends back the
website files to the web browser, which displays them to the user.

c) Highlight the advantages of the internet and the www.

The internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) have revolutionized the way we
communicate, learn, and do business. Some of the advantages of the internet and
the WWW include:

 Access to information: The internet provides access to a vast amount of

information from all over the world. This information can be used for
educational purposes, to stay informed about current events, or to simply learn
new things.
 Communication: The internet makes it easy to communicate with people all
over the world, regardless of their location. This communication can be done
through email, social media, or video conferencing.
 Commerce: The internet has made it possible to buy and sell goods and
services online. This has made it easier for businesses to reach a global
audience and for consumers to find the best deals on products and services.
 Entertainment: The internet provides access to a variety of entertainment
options, such as movies, TV shows, music, and games. This entertainment
can be enjoyed on a variety of devices, including computers, smartphones,
and tablets.

d) State factors to consider when designing a website.

When designing a website, there are a number of factors to consider, including:

 Target audience: Who are you designing the website for? What are their
needs and interests? Once you understand your target audience, you can
design a website that is tailored to their needs.
