(HOD) (Guide)
Micro-Project Report Annexure-2

Title of the Micro Project:- Write a report on all types of hydraulic turbine.

1.0 Rationale: Hydraulic turbines are devices used to convert the energy of flowing
water into mechanical energy, which is then used to generate electricity or perform
other tasks.

2.0 Aims /Benefits of the micro Project:

We study the concept of Hydraulic Turbine.
3.0 Course Outcomes Achieved:

CI403.4 Extend² the impulse momentum principle to study the impact of jet.
CI403.5 Make use of ³ hydraulic turbines and pumps to find overall efficiency.

4.0 Literature Review:

 Introduction: Hydraulic turbines are devices used to convert the energy of flowing water
into mechanical energy, which is then used to generate electricity or perform other tasks.
They play a crucial role in hydroelectric power generation and various industrial applications.
This report provides an overview of the different types of hydraulic turbines, their working
principles, applications, and advantages.

 Pelton Turbine:

 Working Principle:
The Pelton turbine is a type of
impulse turbine designed for
high head, low flow rate
applications. It consists of a
series of spoon-shaped
buckets arranged around the
periphery of a wheel. Water jets are directed onto the buckets, causing the wheel to rotate
due to the impulse force.
 Applications: Pelton turbines are commonly used in mountainous regions with high
head hydropower sites. They are ideal for hydroelectric power generation in areas
with steep gradients and limited water flow.

 Francis Turbine:

 Working Principle: The Francis turbine is a reaction turbine suitable for medium to
high head and moderate flow rate conditions. Water enters the turbine radially and
exits axially, passing through both fixed and moving blades. The turbine extracts
energy from the water through a combination of pressure and kinetic energy
conversion.

 Applications: Francis turbines are versatile and widely used in hydroelectric power
plants, ranging from low to high head applications. They are suitable for a wide range
of flow rates and are commonly employed in dam-based hydropower projects.
 Kaplan Turbine:

 Working Principle: The Kaplan turbine is a type of axial-flow reaction turbine

designed for low to medium head and high flow rate conditions. It features adjustable
blades that can be rotated to optimize performance under varying operating
conditions. Water enters the turbine axially and passes through the adjustable blades,
generating torque as it flows over the blades.

 Applications: Kaplan turbines are commonly used in low head hydropower

installations, such as tidal power plants, run-of-river projects, and irrigation systems.
Their adjustable blade design allows for efficient operation over a wide range of flow
rates and heads.
 Propeller Turbine:

 Working Principle: The propeller turbine, also known as the fixed-blade Kaplan turbine, is
similar in design to the Kaplan turbine but features fixed blades instead of adjustable ones.
Water flows through the turbine axially, passing over the fixed blades, which extract energy
from the water through a combination of pressure and kinetic energy conversion.

 Applications: Propeller turbines are suitable for low head, high flow rate applications, such
as tidal and river flow power generation, irrigation systems, and water treatment plants. They
offer simplicity and reliability, making them a cost-effective option for decentralized
hydropower projects.

 Conclusion: Hydraulic turbines play a vital role in harnessing the energy of flowing water
for power generation and other industrial applications. Understanding the different types of
hydraulic turbines, their working principles, and applications is essential for selecting the
most suitable turbine for specific hydropower projects based on factors such as head, flow
rate, and site conditions. Each type of turbine offers distinct advantages and is suited to
different operating conditions, contributing to the diversity and efficiency of hydropower
generation worldwide.
5.0 Actual Methodology followed:
1) First we form the four student group for Micro-Project.
2) Then finalized topic with mutual discussion under guidance of teacher.
3) As topic finalized, we tried to search available resources from institute workshop
and information related to micro-project.
4) Next step was to collect information from it.
5) After that take photographs and detailed information from it.
6) Report presentation and finalization of it under guidance of teacher.
