* Assertion - Reasoning based questions. [2]

[1]
9. For two statements are given-one labelled Assertion (A) and the other labelled Reason
(R). Select the correct answer to these questions from the codes (a), (b), (c) and (d) as
given below:
a. Both A and R are true, and R is correct explanation of the assertion.
b. Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
c. A is true, but R is false.
d. A is false, but R is true.
Assertion: If a ray of light is incident on a convex mirror along its principal axis, then
the angle of incidence as well as the angle of reflection for a ray of light will be zero.
Reason: A ray of light going towards the centre of curvature of a convex mirror is
reflected back along the same path.

10. In the following questions, a statement of Assertion is given by the corresponding

statement of Reason. Of the statements, mark the correct answer as:
a. If both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of
Assertion.
b. If both Assertion and Reason are true, but Reason is not the correct explanation
of Assertion.
c. If Assertion is true, but Reason is false.
d. If Assertion is false, but Reason is true.
e. If both Assertion and Reason are false.
Assertion: Keeping a point object fixed, if a plane mirror is moved, the image will also
move.
Reason: In case of a plane mirror, distance of object and its image is equal from any
point on the mirror.

SECTION C

* Answer short answer questions. [3 Mark each] ( Write Any 4 ) [12]

11. A concave lens has a focal length of 20cm. At what distance from the lens a 5cm tall
object be placed so that it forms an image at 15cm from the lens? Also calculate the
size of the image formed.

12. Draw a ray diagram showing the path of rays of light when it enters with oblique
incidence:
a. From air into water;
b. From water into air.

13. State the laws of refraction of light. Explain the term ‘absolute refractive index of a
medium’ and write an expression to relate it with the speed of light in vacuum.
14. How far should an object be placed from the pole of a converging mirror of focal length
20cm to form a real image of the size exactly 1 th the size of the object?
4

15. Describe with the help of a ray diagram the nature, size and position of the image
formed when an object is placed at infinity (considerable distance) in front of a convex
lens. State three characteristics of the image so formed.

16. A lens of focal length 20cm is used to produce a ten times magnified image of a film
slide on a screen. How far must the slide be placed from the lens ?

SECTION D

* Long answer questions [5 Mark each] ( Write Any 2 ) [10]

[2]
17. List the sign conventions that are followed in case of refraction of light through
spherical lenses. Draw a diagram and apply these conventions in determining the
nature and focal length of a spherical lens which forms three times magnified real
image of an object placed 16cm from the lens.
18. a. With the help of a suitable circuit diagram prove that the reciprocal of the
equivalent resistance of a group of resistances joined in parallel is equal to the
sum of the reciprocals of the individual resistances.
b. In an electric circuit, two resistors of 12Ω each are joined in parallel to a 6V
battery. Find the current drawn from the battery.
19. At what distance from a concave mirror of focal length 10cm should an object be
placed so that:
a. Its real image is formed 20cm from the mirror?
b. Its virtual image is formed 20cm from the mirror?
20. A student did an experiment with a convex lens. He put an object at different distances
25cm, 30cm, 40cm, 60cm and 120cm from the lens. In each case he measured the
distance of the image from the lens. His results were 100cm, 24cm, 60cm, 30cm and
40cm, respectively. Unfortunately his results are written in wrong order:
a. Rewrite the image distances in the correct order.
b. What would be the image distance if the object distance was 90cm?
c. Which of the object distances gives the biggest image?
d. What is the focal length of this lens?

SECTION E

* case - based/data -based questions [8]

21. A concave mirror forms image of an object thrice in its size on a screen. Magnification of a
mirror gives information about the size of the image relative to the object. It is defined as
the ratio of size of image to the size of object. It is represented by m.
Size of image
m =
Size of object

Sign of magnification by mirror gives the information about the nature of the image
produce by it.
(i) Describe the nature of image formed.
(ii) If the object x distance from the pole of mirror, then find image distance from the
pole.
(iii) If the radius of curvature of mirror is R, then write the relation between object
distance, image distance and focal length of the mirror.
or
(iv) Give one use of concave mirror.
22. Mr. Rakesh was helping her daughter Aruna at home understanding about the basics of
reflection of light. He found the simplest way to convey the role of curved mirrors using
stainless steel teaspoon. Aruna got surprised to know that virtual image is that which can
be seen but cannot be obtained on the screen. Mr. Rakesh then explained the formation of
image using Ray diagrams.
(i) What do you mean by reflection of light?
(ii) The angle between incident ray and reflected ray is 60∘ . What is the value of angle of

[3]
incidence?
(iii) A ray of light is incident on a plane mirror at an angle of 30∘ . what is the angle of
reflection?
or
