Brand Preference for E-Vehicles in Coimbatore
Brand Preference for E-Vehicles in Coimbatore
INTRODUCTION
a) INTRODUCTION
An electric vehicle EV is a vehicle that uses one or more electric motors for
propulsion. It can be powered by a collector system, with electricity from
extravehicular sources, or it can be powered autonomously by a battery sometimes
charged by solar panels, or by converting fuel to electricity using fuel cells or a
generator. EVs include, but are not limited to, road and rail vehicles, surface and
underwater vessels, electric aircraft, and electric spacecraft. For road vehicles,
together with other emerging automotive technologies such as autonomous driving,
connected vehicles, and shared mobility, EVs form a future mobility vision called
Connected, Autonomous, Shared, and Electric CASE Mobility.
EVs first came into existence in the late 19th century, when electricity was among
the preferred methods for motor vehicle propulsion, providing a level of comfort
and ease of operation that could not be achieved by the gasoline cars of the time.
Internal combustion engines were the dominant propulsion method for cars and
trucks for about 100 years, but electric power remained commonplace in other
vehicle types, such as trains and smaller vehicles of all types.
Government incentives to increase adoption were first introduced in the late 2000s,
including in the United States and the European Union, leading to a growing market
for vehicles in the 2010s. Increasing public interest and awareness and structural
incentives, such as those being built into the green recovery from the COVID-19
pandemic, are expected to greatly increase the electric vehicle market. During the
COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns have reduced the number of greenhouse gases in
gasoline or diesel vehicles. The International Energy Agency said in 2021 that
governments should do more to meet climate goals, including policies for heavy
electric vehicles. Electric vehicle sales may increase from 2% of the global share in
2016 to 30% by 2030. As of July 2022 global EV market size was $280 billion and
it is expected to grow to $1 trillion by 2026. Much of this growth is expected in
markets like North America, Europe, and China; a 2020 literature review suggested
that growth in the use of electric 4-wheeled vehicles appears economically unlikely
in developing economies, but that electric 2-wheeler growth is likely. There is more
2 and 3 wheel EVs than any other type.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
REVIEW OF LITERATURE:
Deekshu (2018) found that most of the customers were satisfied with the mileage
of the Electric bikes and are convinced about the electric bike benefits and were willing to
refer it to their friends. It was found that most of the customers are not satisfied with
after-sales service. It shows that customers are dissatisfied with the sale service. It was
found that a maximum number of the customers feel the speed of the electric bikes to be
very low and were not satisfied with the current speed of the bikes. It was found that the
non-availability of Electric bikes is also a reason for lower market share and consumers
not purchasing them.
Consumer preferences for electric vehicles by Fanchao Liao, Eric Molin &
Bert van Wee, (2017) Widespread adoption of Electric Vehicles may contribute to
lessening of problems like environmental pollution, global warming and oil dependency.
However, this penetration of Electric Vehicle is comparatively low in spite of governments
implementing strong promotion policies. They presented a comprehensive review of
studies on consumer preferences for Electric Vehicle aiming to convey policy-makers and
give direction to further research. They compared the economic and psychological
approach towards consumer preference for Electric vehicle. The impact of financial and
technical attributes of Electric Vehicle on its utility is generally found to be significant,
including its purchase and operating cost, driving range, charging duration, vehicle
performance and brand diversity on the market. The density of charging stations also
positively affects the utility and promotion of Electric Vehicle. The impact of incentive
policies, tax reduction is quite effective.
CHAPTER : 3
AN OVERVIEW OF E VEHICLE
INTRODUCTION
Electric vehicles (EVs) are automobiles that run on electricity instead of traditional fossil
fuels like gasoline or diesel. These vehicles have become increasingly popular in recent
years due to their low carbon footprint, reduced emissions, and the growing availability of
charging infrastructure. The global push for more sustainable and environmentally
friendly transportation options has also contributed to the rise in popularity of electric
vehicles.
The first electric vehicle was built in the early 19th century, but it was not until the late
20th century that electric cars began to gain widespread attention. Today, there are several
types of electric vehicles, including battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid
electric vehicles (PHEVs), and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are powered solely by a rechargeable battery pack and an
electric motor. These vehicles do not have an internal combustion engine and do not
produce any tailpipe emissions. They are considered to be the most environmentally
friendly type of electric vehicle since they do not rely on any fossil fuels for their
operation.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have both an electric motor and an internal
combustion engine. They can be charged through an external power source or by the
internal combustion engine while driving. These vehicles can operate on electric power
alone for short distances before switching to the combustion engine. PHEVs are
considered to be a good transition vehicle for those not ready to fully commit to an
all-electric vehicle.
Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) also have both an electric motor and an internal
combustion engine, but they cannot be charged externally. Instead, the battery is charged
through the use of regenerative braking and the internal combustion engine. HEVs are
generally more fuel-efficient than traditional gasoline or diesel vehicles but do produce
some emissions.
One of the main benefits of electric vehicles is their reduced carbon footprint. EVs
produce significantly fewer emissions than gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles, resulting
in less air pollution and a cleaner environment. Additionally, electric vehicles have lower
operating costs than traditional vehicles since they require less maintenance and have
lower fuel costs.
Another benefit of electric vehicles is their quiet operation. Since electric motors make
very little noise compared to internal combustion engines, electric vehicles are much
quieter than traditional vehicles. This is especially important in urban areas where noise
pollution can be a problem.
However, electric vehicles do have some challenges to overcome. One of the main
challenges is the range of the vehicle. While battery technology has improved significantly
in recent years, most electric vehicles still have a limited range compared to traditional
vehicles. This can be a concern for those who need to travel long distances.
Another challenge for electric vehicles is the availability of charging infrastructure. While
more charging stations are being installed every day, there is still a significant need for
additional charging infrastructure, especially in rural areas.
In conclusion, electric vehicles are a promising technology that offers many benefits,
including reduced emissions, lower operating costs, and quieter operation. While there are
still challenges that need to be addressed, the increasing availability of charging
infrastructure and improvements in battery technology are making electric vehicles a more
viable option for many drivers. As the world continues to move towards more sustainable
and environmentally friendly transportation options, electric vehicles are likely to play an
increasingly important role in the future of transportation.
