“True happiness is felt through giving.”
Christmas season is really fast approaching. It was usual with Filipino people to share its
blessings and belongings as a sign of love and sympathy towards the unfortunate or under
privileged Filipinos during this kind of season. In connection to that, STI student, together with
its NSTP coordinator and with the support of the school’s president, a Community Extension
Program was successfully conducted and held at Sitio Lamintao, Brgy. Rizal, Surigao City.

On the 16th day of December, 2018, a pack of NSTP students came to Sitio Lamintao
with its purpose to share some groceries and belongings towards the poor and personally witness
with themselves the situation in the said community. This program was became possible as one
of the requirements in the said course subject, but except to that educational purpose, there is
truly the most significant purpose in conducting this kind of activity, and it is to bring the
happiness and love in Sitio Lamintao.

Various activities were being enjoyed and witnessed by the residents, including the
Literacy program, which was done by the active participation of some NSTP students, parlor
games that were participated by the kids and the mothers in the community, and most
importantly, the highlight of the activity, which is the giving of goods and belongings.

As we have interviewed one resident of Sitio Lamintao, he said that despite of the
situation in their community, he would rather choose to stay and continue his lifetime living in
this Sitio because he find it as a home in which his heart truly belong. He also mentioned about
the dominant source of income in their place which is making roof for bahay kubo or “pawd” in
bisaya. Some challenges also that were being faced by the people was the transportation and their
situation when calamities are happening, but he also added that rescues were present in their
community during these unwanted phenomena. However, we can see that residents in Sitio
Lamintao would rather choose to stay in their current residency than transfer to cities as what
they have said that they already found their sense of home in this Sitio.

On the other hand, we, the STI’ers had saw and felt the happiness from their smiles and
laugh, the sincerity of their gratitude, and the warm participation of the people in the community.
It was a great privileged that we have given a chance to be part of this activity as we have
realized that giving is really something that God wants us to do. The happiness that we can felt
just by seeing the children smile and saying the magic words “Thank you” is beyond
unexplainable. It is overwhelming. It can give us relief with our hearts. As such, there are really
Filipino citizen in which we just don’t realize that they need more of our help. Everyday, we
have wasted so much foods, neglecting to appreciate what we have, and always complaining
about the small challenges that God has given to us, without knowing the fact that there are
people out there who have bigger problems than we do, who were crawling to death just to seek
foods for theirselves and their family, who were seeing hope with just 20 pesos in their hands,
and who were the most in need of love. It was quite unfair if we will remain blind with this
reality in our society and it was our responsibility to help those people who were in need.
