INTRODUCTION

Praise be to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, because with His grace and mercy, the writer and the
team were given the opportunity to complete the Article Module for the implementation of
the manufacturing process practicum in the 2019/2020 educational year.

In this module the authors and team re-designed our masterpiece of practicum products
namely Stirling Engine, where we added 2 pistons and enlarged the scale of parts that were
made in the previous version for the needs of integrated practicum activities in the Faculty of
Industrial and System Engineering

3. BASIC THEORY

3.1 Turning Process

Turning process is a machining process to create cylindrical-shaped parts by
cutting away unwanted material. Turning process worked with using lathe machine.
All the basic form below can be defined as a process of machining the outer surface
of a cylindrical object with:
1. Rotating workpiece.
2. A single-point cutting tool.
3. Movement chiseled parallel to the axis of workpiece at a certain distance so
that it will remove the outer surface of workpiece.

Figure 3.2.1 Turning Process (CUSTOMPART, 2007)

5
3.2 Computer-Aided Manufacturing: Turning
Mastercam is one of the computer-aided manufacturing software that is mostly
used by NC programmer. Mastercam turning gives some complete modern toolpaths
and techniques. There are the function and advantages of using Mastercam turning:
1. Gives a set of tools that impact your entire process.
2. Gives some variety of techniques to turn all of your parts exactly as you need
them.
3. Mastercam turning gives a set of C-axis programming tools to combine with
Mastercam mill.
4. Easy roughing, finishing, threading, grooving, boring, drilling, and cut off.
5. Tool inspection lets you automatically stop machining, allowing you to check
the insert during your roughing, finishing, and grooving operations.
6. Quickly translate geometry and create a part transfer operation from the main
spindle to sub spindle.
Mastercam lathe can create general turning, milling (C-axis), part handling, and
various operations. The part requires basic lathe operations such as facing, roughing,
and finishing as well as grooving and threading toolpaths.

3.2.1 General Operations
General operation is one of turning classifications, this type of operation
has ten different operations that contains all the general operation in turning
process.

Grooving is removing the

material in the location of an

indentation can be square,
round or angular in the

The tool is fed radially into

the rotating work along its
7. length to cut off the end of
the part. This operation is
sometimes referred to as
Cut off parting.

OD GROOVE

Instead of feeding the tool

along a straight line parallel
to the axis of rotation as in
9. turning, the tool follows a
contour that is other than
straight, thus creating a
Contour Rough
contoured form in the turned
part.

OD ROUGH
Prime Turning is a new
method which enables you to
10. do turning in all directions in
much more efficient and
productive way as compared
Prime Turning to conventional turning.

9
3.2.2 Canned Cycle
Canned cycle operation has four different operations, canned cycle
operation means the operation used to make a canned part in the end.

3.2.3 C-axis Operations

C-axis operation has four different operations to simulate it in
Mastercam, C-axis operation means the operation goes along in more than
three different axis.

3.2.4 Part Handling

Part handling has seven different operations that can transfer part form
the left spindle to the right, so that you can create the toolpaths to complete
the process, or to pickoff, cutoff, and transfer operations that leave the part
clamped in the right chuck.
