Type: Based on Projectile Fired Horizontally
1. A body is projected horizontally from the top of a cliff with a velocity of 9.8 ms-1. What time elapses
before the horizontal and vertical velocities become equal? (Given g = 9.8 ms-2)
2. A projectile is fired horizontally with a velocity of 98 ms-1 from the top of the hill 490 meter high. Find
(i) The velocity with which the projectile strikes the ground,
(ii) Time taken to reach the ground and
(iii) The distance of the target from the hill.
3. A soldier fires a bullet horizontally from the top of a cliff with a velocity of 10 ms-1. If the bullet strikes
the ground after 2 s, find the height of the cliff. Also calculate the velocity with which the bullet strikes
the ground.
4. A fighter jet plane is flying at a height of 500 m with a velocity of 360 km h-1. It releases a bomb, when
200 m away from the enemy camp. Will the bomb hit the camp? Take, g = 10 ms-2.
5. A helicopter on flood relief mission, flying horizontally with a speed of 54 km h-1 at an altitude of 245 m
has to drop a food packet for a victim standing on the ground. At what distance from the victim should
the packet be dropped? Take g = 10 ms-2.
6. A ball rolls off the top of a stair case with a constant horizontal velocity u. If each step is h metre high

7. A ball is rolled off the edge of a building with constant horizontal velocity of 4 ms-1. If the height of the
building is 49 m, find the velocity with which the ball hits the ground. (Take g = 9.8 ms-2)
8. A ball is thrown horizontally with a velocity of 15 m s-1. What will be vertical and horizontal
components of its velocity in 0.3 second? How long will it take the velocity to become inclined at angle
45o with the horizontal? [Ans. 15 ms-1, 294 m s-1, 15 s]
9. A stone is thrown horizontally with the velocity 15 ms-1 from the tower with a height of 25 m. Find (i)
the time during which the stone is in motion, (ii) The distance from the tower base where the stone will
drop onto the ground, (iii) the velocity with which it will touch the ground and (iv) the angle formed by
the trajectory of the stone with the horizontal at the point where it reaches the ground. Neglect the

10. A ball is projected horizontally with a speed uH from a height h. It lands at a distance d from a point

11. A body is thrown horizontally from the top of a tower and strikes the ground after 3 seconds at an angle
of 45o with the horizontal. Find the height of the tower and speed with which the body was projected.

12. A body is standing on the top of a tower 100 m high. He throws a packet with a horizontal velocity of 10
m s-1 to his friend standing on the ground, 200 m away from the foot of the tower. Will the packet reach
to his friend? If not, how short will the packet fall? [Ans. Packet will fall 154.9 m short of his friend]

13. A stone is thrown with a horizontal velocity of 15 ms-1 from the top of the tower. If the stone hits the
ground at a distance of 100 m from the foot of the tower, calculate the height of the top of the tower.

14. A ball is thrown horizontally from the top of the tower of height 50 m. If the stone hits the ground at a
distance of 20 m from the foot of the tower, calculate the velocity with which the ball was thrown.

15. A metallic sphere X suspended from a string oscillates as shown in figure. The string breaks when the
sphere is at a height of 10 m and moving horizontally with a velocity of 1 m s -1. Calculate the horizontal

16. A bomber is flying horizontally with a velocity of 540 km h-1 at a height 2000 m. How far from the
enemy camp should it release a bomb so as to hit the camp? (Take g = 10 ms-2) [Ans. 3 km]
17. A boy throws a ball horizontally from the window 500 m above the ground in one building so that it
enters the window 10 m above the ground in the other building. If two buildings are 100 m apart, find the
horizontal velocity of the ball. [Ans. 10 m s-1]

Type: Projectile Fired at an Angle q with the Horizontal
1. A bullet fired at an angle of 15o with the horizontal hits the ground 3 km away. Can we hit a target at
distance of 7 km by adjusting its angle of projection?
2. How much high above the ground, a boy can throw the ball if he is able to throw the same ball upto
maximum horizontal distance of 50 m?
3. “For angles of projection which exceed or fall short of 45o by an equal-amounts, the ranges are equal”.
Prove this statement.
4. Prove that the maximum horizontal range is four times the maximum height attained by a projectile
which is fired along the required oblique direction.

Another body of mass 2m is projected with a velocity u2 at an angle q with the horizontal. The second

12. A projectile can have the same range R for two angles of projection. If t1 and t2 be the times of flights in
the two cases, then find the value of t1t2.
13. A projectile if fired at an angle of 45o with the horizontal. Find the elevation angle of the projectile at its

14. A shot is fired from a point at a distance of 200 m from the foot of a tower 100 m high so that it just
passes over it. Find the magnitude and direction of the velocity of shot.
