lovely view of the fields. Better than her old flat then all she could see was a brick
wall there.

Can you help me get dinner ready Michael? I know you’ve got some homework to
do but you’ll have time to do that after we’re eaten. But there’s a program on TV
later that I want to watch. Well I need you to help me. You’ll still have time to do
your homework afterwards and you always record the program. All right then I
suppose I can watch it tomorrow.

Your guitar teacher rang while you were out and he can’t do your lesson next
Tuesday the one on the third. Does that mean I miss a week. will the next one be

Does your house seem empty now your sisters left home Josh? Not really my
grandmother’s moved into her room and she doesn’t go out much it’s really nice

8. Listen to the conversation between a man and a woman. What does the man do?
Hello Mark. How’s the new job? Are you still enjoying office life? Well actually I
left about a month ago. I decided I wasn’t really interested in computers and that I
wanted to teach English so I’ve got a job in a shop at the moment and I’m going to
start a course next September.
9. Listen to the weather forecast. What is the weather like today?
And if anyone is driving in the area tonight. Please take extra care especially if
you’re driving on country roads. There have been several reports of trees blown

my advice.

there’s a new Italian restaurant just opened on the high street. I heard they did
great eat pizza. We could have chicken salad tomorrow. All right. I’ll put it in
fridge.
11. Which TV program will they watch together?
Has not basketball match finished yet? You know I want to watch the wildlife
program at 9 o’clock. It’s cancelled and everything’s running late because the rock
concerts finished later than expected. Sit down and watch this much with me. It’s
really exciting and more interesting than looking at animals. Okay then.
12. A man and a woman are talking about shopping. What did Helen buy?

Where is he now? He’s on phone inside the cafe. Why don’t you go inside? He’ll
be finished in a minute
14. Four people are talking about diets and health. Complete the sentences below.
Speaker A: I tried crash diets such as one where you just eat cabbage soup and
another way you think nothing lemonade with some salt and pepper for about
seven days without any food. They worked temporarily but after a while I put the
weight back on then I was introduced to these diets pills and my weight went
down to 65 kilos but I wasn’t earning a great deal of money and I simply couldn’t
afford to keep it up that’s when I decided to save my money and join a gym.
Speaker B: I used to eat a lot of junk food that was quick and inexpensive and it
satisfied my hunger immediately. The problem was I ate very little fresh food and
this had a serious effect on my health. I became overweight and suffered all sorts
of illnesses. The doctor strongly advised me to rethink my attitude to food if not
he said the consequences could be very serious. Well it can’t ignore advice like
that can you so I started to eat more healthfully and now if I get hungry between
meals I have a little cheese or some nuts just fill the hole.
Speaker C: I under no real pressure to lose weight but I take care over what I eat
simply because it makes me better. when I want to treat myself I have a piece of
cake or few biscuits. I read a lot about dieting and most nutritionist seem to agree
that as long as you eat sweet things after a meal then there’s no problem. so for
example I only ever eat chocolates after lunch or dinner and never too many of
course just one or two.
Speaker D: I like eating and I’m not at all interested in dieting but I do go to see a
nutritionist who helps me maintain a sensible balanced diet with plenty of fresh
fruit and vegetables, meat and fish carbohydrates such as rice and pasta, several
glasses of water a day and no snacks between meals. She told me to give up
cheese but I ignored her. I enjoy good food. I don’t want to deprive myself of the
things I love.
15. Listen to a man and a woman talking about keeping fit. Read the statements below
and decide which opinion, the man, the woman, or both the man and the woman.
You can listen to the discussion twice.
I need some exercise. Any suggestions? How about running? Do you go running?
No but I might start if I had someone to go with. I always liked the idea of doing a
marathon. All that training must be fun. Fun? Anyway I don’t want to get that fit I
just want to feel a bit happier. Ok we’ll forget the marathon training then. Yeah
but money was a good idea actually I’ve had enough of boring exercise classes. I
didn’t know you did classes. I only went once or twice. I found it really
embarrassing. exercise I’ve been in front of other people. That’s a shame. It takes
a while before you get used to doing something like that and classes are a good
place to meet people. It just wasn’t me. You won’t like running in the street if you
don’t like people watching you. Well if we went together I think I feel okay. Yeah
and if we make arrangements I’ll have to turn up. I can imagine myself turning off
the alarm clock and going back to sleep if I’m not meeting anybody. So we’re in
the morning then. Oh yeah we won’t want to go running after a hard the heck
college. I suppose so. I’m not good at getting up in the morning. Well if you want
to get healthy you’ve got to work at it you won’t get anywhere if you stay in bed
all day. Okay okay. Right. Let’s start tomorrow. I'll see you at 6 o’clock at the
park. 6 o’clock in the morning? Yes in the morning.
16. Listening to a woman talk at a lecture about her work as an a nutritionist for horses
and answer the questions below.
Hi everyone. I’m Terry and I’m here to talk about my job which is one that many
of you may never have heard of. I’m sure you’ve had experiences of diets of
different kinds. well I’m a nutritionist but not for people for horses. How did that
come about? My childhood loves were animals and science. And my parents
always imagined I’d be a vet. I did think about it and also about studying
medicine. But in the end I did a biology degree at university which was when I
got interested in food and health in general. I then discovered that there was a
module in animal nutrition and everything took off from there and our work in the
department involved in research into the physical state of horses and what makes
them fat so I can advise horse breeders and owners on the best diet for the animals
to follow. I’ve recently been involved in a study on how much grass horses eat
compared with other food during this trial it was found that some horses at up to 5
to 7 percent of their own body weight in grass daily which amounts to an extra
weight gain of approximately 3 kilograms a day on average. I’m not always out
with the animals. I also spend a lot of time in the office having meetings and also
doing paperwork not my favorite occupation. We have a telephone hepline where
people can call with questions or problems and although some might find it
challenging as you get put on the spot by callers for me. It’s very rewarding.
17. Listening to a man talking about a cycling expedition across Europe and answer
the question below.
Hi everyone. I’m Pete and I’m here because you’re all planning to go on your very
first cycling expedition across Europe. I’ve been there and I’d like to share some
of my experiences with you and give you some tips for making the most of such a
trip. It’s incredibly exciting but it can all go horribly wrong if you don’t follow
some simple guidelines. I’ll answer any questions at the end so don’t worry if
anything occurs to you while I’m speaking. So what will guarantee you a
successful expedition. It may seem obvious. But in my opinion it’s preparation
read as much as you can about everywhere you’re going so you can anticipate any
problems that might come up on a practical level the first thing you need to do is
arrange all the finance for the trip which may mean looking for people to back
you. I hope you’ve already got some sponsors in the place but you can never have
too many. I email potential sponsors were then called then sent letters. You’ll need
a great deal of patience but finding the right person to talk to is crucial and don’t
get downhearted if it takes time. One thing I was told had really helped me was
not to get bogged down in the detail to set the leaving date and stick to it and that
moment of departure is a great feeling. once you’re out there on the road there are
loads of things to think about. I had this big idea of covering a predetermined
distance every day but people kept stopping me to talk about interesting things and
opening up to me about their own dreams and amitions. I got a glimpse into the
day to day lives of people living in the different countries and cultures on the way.
I felt it was important not to let the concept of cycling around Europe get in the
way of the experience which I described as special and not something that many
people get the chance to have.
