1.

Explain the difference between ordinary, flat bottom conical flask and a filtering flask
Ans: Filtering flask is like the ordinary flat bottom conical flask but it has a side
hose connection.
2. If you are given a solution of a compound and you are required to evaporate all the
solvent by heating, which of the two pieces of glassware will use: a conical flask or a
beaker. Give your reasons
Ans: Beaker is preferable. Reason: a beaker has a wider opening whereas a conical
flask has a narrow neck and will impede the escape of the vapour.
3. To expose maximum surface area of a filter paper for filtration, it is folded in a
special way. What is the folded filter paper called?
Ans: Fluted filter paper.

1. Identify the items of the following that may not be needed for a volumetric exercise

(i) Vigreux column (ii) beaker (iii) volumetric flask

(iv) watch glass (v) Analytical balance (vi) Pipette

Ans: (i) Vigreux column and (iv) watch glass

2. What is the main difference between the assembly of equipment for simple distillation

and one for fractional distillation

Ans: For fractional distillation a fractionating or fractionation column is needed.

3. How do you ensure that boiling of liquid in a round bottom flask the liquid boils

smoothly and without any bumps

Ans: Boiling chips are added

1. If you are given a water soluble solid salt, and you are required to dissolve it in
approximately 100 cm3 of water, which glassware will be most appropriate?
ANSWER: Beaker
2. What are the main features of a laboratory pan balance?
ANSWER: (1) It has two pans
(2) The pans are hanging at the end of a beam
(3) The beam is balanced on a sharp edge.
3. Give two main differences between a watch glass and an evaporating dish.
ANSWER: (1) An evaporating dish is usually made of ceramic material while
watch glass is glass
(2) While the evaporating dish is deep or is like a bowl, a watch
glass is very shallow or has a small curvature.
1. Name the piece of glassware that must be present in a set up for heating a mixture under
reflux such that the solvent is not lost as a vapour.
ANSWER: (Water) Condenser
2. Name the piece of glassware suitable for preparation of a bulk solution of accurately
known concentration.
ANSWER: Volumetric Flask
3. How many openings does a distillation head have and why?
ANSWER: 3
One opening for the thermometer
One opening to the condenser
One opening to the flask [in simple distillation] or fractionating column [in
fractional distillation]
1. What is the name of the piece of glassware used for separating two immiscible liquids?
ANSWER: Separating funnel
1. What piece of glassware would you need to weigh a small quantity of a solid or a liquid
on a sensitive weighing balance?
ANSWER: Weighing bottle.

2. If you are performing distillation, what piece of glassware will ensure that the liquids
are reformed after evaporation?
ANSWER: (water) condenser.

3. Which flask is most suitable as the receiver of the titrant from the burette in a titration?
ANSWER: conical flask
1. What is the name of the special flat–bottom conical flask with side hose connection?
ANSWER: Filtering Flask.
2. What is the name of the glassware used for drying solid samples in the laboratory?
ANSWER: Desiccator
3. What glassware is used in addition to round–bottom flask for refluxing a liquid mixture?
ANSWER: Condenser.
