Situation

You are Pat Lee. You work for the English Enhancement Department of the English Authority. You are an
assistant to Donnie Kwok, the manager in charge of the English Enhancement Department. The
Department is responsible for holding activities to enhance English for students.
You will listen to a recording of the weekly podcast programme Fun in Town. In the podcast you will hear

Today, our teacher invited us to go to an English café! This activity was part of the English Fun Week organized by
the English Enhancement Department. Guess what? We had to speak English all the time inside the café. Even
when we ordered food, we had to use English. If we did not speak English, no waiters would serve us. I learned a
lot of new vocabulary, like Spaghetti Carbonara (creamy and yummy!) and Minestrone (soup). What's more,
speaking English in such a fun way boosted my confidence. I used to be very frightened when I spoke English. But
now I am gaining confidence.

So thrilled today! Our teacher took us to a Film Show as an activity of the English Fun Week. This year, the classic film chosen
was Titanic. The film is really touching and romantic. I cried for a long time when Jack died - he sacrificed
himself for the life of Rose! But in order to improve our listening skills, there were no subtitles. I had to listen
carefully to what the characters said. After watching the

film, we needed to discuss the film in English in groups. This helped us exchange ideas! This was a fruitful
experience.

We're half way through the summer holidays already! Haven't done much except I enrolled in a public speaking
course and today was the first class. The teacher told us to start preparing a speech. We are going to have a public
speaking competition during the last class - only 5 weeks away! There are a lot of topics coming across my mind -
peace and war, crime and punishment and love and relationships! Well, the teacher said that it was important for us
to choose a topic that is appropriate to the audience. Since all my classmates are students, I think love and
relationships will be the best
one!

Extract from Sandy Lam's article ‘A Review of Research into Public

Speaking'

There is sufficient evidence to conclude that certain behaviour leads to positive

and negative effects on the perception of others in public speaking. (Chan, 1999;
Chan and Wong, 2004). It has been argued that feeling some nervousness before
giving a speech is natural, or even beneficial, but too much nervousness can be
detrimental (Duncan, 2006). In short, a moderate amount of nervousness is preferred.

Moore (2010), for example, found that practising to a certain level would
enhance preparation. The results can be seen in Figure 1 below. It was found that
speakers rehearsed out loud with all equipment that would be used, such as the
PowerPoint slides and microphones. He found that the outfit worn was also
vital even during rehearsal and suggested speakers rehearse wearing the same
clothes. Speakers are also recommended to practise with a timer, but should allow 20%
extra time for the unexpected.

De Venti (2011) drew some conclusions from a survey, where she focused on
over 10,000 speakers and audience members. She found out that the
most successful speakers believed that people wanted them to succeed.
Contrary to the less successful speakers, these successful speakers believed
that the audience wanted them to be interesting and stimulating. The
most fatal mistake was apologizing for any nervousness. Since most audience
members do not notice it, it was found that an apology would be awkward and
interrupt the speech.

English Fun Week (April Issue)

May will be a great month to brush up your English. Dennis Tam, a well-known
producer working at TVC, will be holding a talk at the opening ceremony of the
English Fun Week. Together with Jacqueline Wong, he will host a seminar on 'Gender and
Language: Understand Your Lover Better'. For this issue, we are honoured to have been
given the opportunity to interview Dennis Tam and Jacqueline Wong.

First of all, welcome. Could you please tell us a bit about yourselves?

Jacqueline: I took media studies in New York. We work at the same company, TVC. We are both
responsible for language programmes. In fact, we produced a documentary series called English
In Life.
 Dennis: I studied in Hong Kong and my major was journalism. I am glad to be invited to host the seminar. In
fact, it is a summary of one episode of English In Life.

Jacqueline, why are you on the panel of the English Fun

Week?

Jacqueline: I am interested in promoting English through games and film shows. Students
will be able to use English in everyday context after taking part in this event.

Dennis, are you nervous about preparing for the seminar?

Dennis: You know what? I can be quite shy. I don't often talk in front of the public. But a famous
programme host taught me a special technique. She told me when she is on a show, she always
imagines herself speaking - loud and clear. She also visualizes the audience clapping as it
will boost her confidence. I find this strategy extremely useful.

What is the biggest discovery you made while producing English In Life?

Jacqueline: I guess it helps me think about language and culture because boys and girls
behave socially in different ways. Gender-based expectations result in the encoding of
social behaviour, which is carried on into adulthood. Communication is not only about saying
things. The way they say it is also important. Men and women are living in two subcultures
- they have different styles of speaking and establishing social status.

Dennis: That's true. When we look at children's behaviour, they seldom play with children of the opposite
gender. Childhood play is where we learn our conversational style. Do you know the main
difference where gender is concerned? Boys tend to negotiate their status whereas girls establish
intimacy. The same theme is found throughout adulthood.

How to write effective emails

Everyone gets scores of emails daily. Follow these email etiquette tips to ensure that your emails are
productive and generate good replies.
1. Write a meaningful subject line:
Before you click 'send', include a subject line that accurately describes the content.

2. Keep the message focused:

If your email contains multiple loosely linked messages, it will increase the
chance of your recipients only answering the first few points.
Keep your message readable. Try to use standard capitalization and skip lines between
paragraphs.

3. Be aware of the gender of the recipients:

Men use emails to extend their own authority in society while women nurture existing
relationships and develop new ones.
Paying attention to these goals will help you phrase your email
better.

4. Proofread:

Especially if you are delegating tasks, take the time to make your message look professional. Look for
spelling mistakes. Try to make one point in each paragraph.
5. Distinguish between formal and informal situations:
Don't use 'LOL' or abbreviations in communication with a colleague as this could cause
confusion.
