D: APPROACH/TEACHING STRATEGY:
Learners will be encouraged to take charge of their learning, with the teacher acting as a guide or
facilitator.
E: RESOURCES:
- A chart that contains different types of maps (refer to page 5)
- Flash cards (refer to page 6)
F: LESSON PHASES:
1. INTRODUCTION
The teacher will start by presenting a chart that contains maps to the learners, and ask them
what do they see in the chart, learners will respond with what is in the chart.
The teacher will follow by asking learners prior knowledge questions such as:
1. What is a map?
2. What does is map used for?
3. Do you know how to read a map?
Expected answers:
1. Maps is the drawing that shows a place.
2. To find a place
3. No
We have someone who draws maps, and we refer to that person as cartographer.
2. DEVELOPMENT
STEP ONE: define the map
The teacher will provide learners with the definition on a map:
Maps are the geological representation of a real place. They are an important source of information in
all aspect of life. Maps provide people with the location, direction and the distance of a place.
The following questions will be asked:
1. What is a location?
2. What is a direction?
3. What is a distance?
Expected answers:
1. A location is a position of a place as seen in a map.
2. It is a way something is pointing or moving towards.
3. The location of something relative to something else.
STEP TWO: Map concepts
The teacher will ask every concept on learners first to initiate discussion, thereafter the
Pg. 2 – LESSON PLAN FORMAT EDTP611 WITH REFLECTION
teacher will the give learners the definition of terminology.
what is a scale?
The scale is the too used to understand the relationship between distance on a map and the actual
distance on the real world. the distance is often shown in a form of a ration e.g 1:50 000 or in a form of
a fraction 1/50 000. It indicates how many units are represented by one unit on the map.
What do you think distance indicator is?
Distance indicators are the tools that shows distance between two places or intersections. They are
often presented in kms. Distance indicators makes it easy for tourist to calculate distance while
travelling.
What is a longitude? What is a latitude? And how do they differ?
Longitude is an imaginary line that runs around the earth from north pole to south pole. Latitude is an
imaginary line that runs across the earth, it specifies the earth and the north position of a point on the
earth surface. The latitude goes from east to west while longitude goes from north to south.
What are the map symbols?
These are the smaller pictures that are drawn on the map to show the position of an attraction or
service in real life.
What are Time zones?
A 15% difference in a longitude that result in one-hour difference in time between two places.
What are map legends?
Legends are the descriptions of what each symbol represent in real life.
Can someone explain the grid reference?
Maps had lines that are labelled in alphabets and rows that are labelled in numbers grid reference are
the squares that are formed as a result of those lines. A map grid reference helps in finding the
location o a place on a map. For instance, A1 means that a specific place is located where column a
meet with row 1.
What is an equator? What is a hemisphere
It is an imaginary line that divides the earth into two halves horizontally. Hemisphere are the two
halves that are formed when the equator divides the earth, it forms the upper hemisphere which is
called the northern hemisphere and the below hemisphere is called the southern hemisphere. There is
also what we call a Greenwich meridian, it is the 0° line of longitude that divides the world into two
hemispheres, the eastern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere.
Any idea what Universal time co-ordinate (UTC) is?
UTC is the standard international time measurement that is used all over the world. there are 24 times
zones in the world for each hour of the day.
What do you think International Date line (IDL) is?
It is an imaginary line that determines where in the world day ends and another start. It passes
through the middle of Pacific Ocean at about 180°longitude.
STEP THREE: identify the concept on a map
Using the maps, teacher will show learners the examples of these concepts on the map for example,
learners will be able to see how the scale, symbols, grid reference etc looks like in a map
3. CONSOLIDATION/LESSON CONCLUSION
The learners will be given a chance to ask question directed to the teacher if they did not understand.
Thereafter learners will be divided into groups of 5, and given the envelop that contains the above
Pg. 3 – LESSON PLAN FORMAT EDTP611 WITH REFLECTION
concept. The teacher will provide learner with oral question/description learners in response have to
raise or shout the concept that matches the description or a question.
G: LEARNER ACTIVITY
Explain what learner activity you will use during your lesson. If you are using a
worksheet, attach it to the Lesson Plan.
Using the top-class learner textbook, learner will conduct activity 1.1 on page 81.
H: REFLECTION ON PLANNING AND TEACHING OF LESSON
1. CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED
2. HOW DID I USE RESOURCES IN MY LESSON
3. LEARNER PARTICIPATTION
4. USE OF A VARIETY OF QUESTIONS
1. What is a map?
2. What does is map used for?
3. Do you know how to read a map?
