This Grade 5 ICT Self Learning Module is made for you to enhance your
computer skills, broaden your knowledge and allow you to discover and develop
concepts that you can use in your everyday activities and also create things that will
help the society and our changing world.

Lesson 1: The Significance of ICT in Society

Directly or indirectly, ICT is affecting the lives of millions of people on the planet-
including you. But what is ICT? Simply defined, Information and Communication Technology
or ICT is the use of combined technologies, such as the internet, telephone, video, and
computer systems, for information, communication, and collaboration

The Role and Importance of ICT in Society

The importance and impact of ICT can be observed in many facets of everyday life. You
can see it at work in the little things. Your teacher might have used an e-learning software
from a computer to teach you a particular lesson. You might have seen someone
withdrawing money from an ATM. You might have even purchased or downloaded apps on
the internet for your tablet. Furthermore, you can also see its importance on the things you
do not see every day. On the road, you might have noticed an ambulance, with its loud
siren, passing by your car. Inside it, ICT tools are being used to save the lives of people in
distress before they even reach the hospital. The police use ICT tools in communication and
surveillance to ensure your safety and security. Even a space agency like NASA uses ICT to
keep track of and communicate with their astronauts in space. Undeniably, ICT has become
important in various aspects of everyday life because of the improvements, innovations
ease, and convenience it brings to various day-to-day activities. Here are some of the
different sectors of society where ICT plays a key role.

EDUCATION

For years, the academic sector has been integrating ICT in the classroom, using
computer- aided instruction (CAI) software, e-learning modules, library and many more. No
doubt, ICT improves and makes teaching system, automated grading system, appealing,
and learning interesting, and engaging for teachers and learners alike.

Electronic learning or e-learning describes all forms of learning that are based on
electronic technologies. Basically, it is learning in traditional classrooms that integrate the
use of in its courses or in online schools with minimal teacher-pupil interaction. technology
Some of the advantages of e-learning include adaptive time, place, and pace access and
availability of education tools anytime and anywhere, unlimited access reduced cost of
education, and a multimedia environment that integrates video, audio, and text.

COMMERCE

People engaged in commercial activities utilize ICT tools to market and sell their
products through emails, phone calls, text messages, or online applications. Do you know
that there are reliable and trustworthy websites where you can buy products and then have
them delivered to you? How about websites where you can sell your items? Really, ICT can
save you a great amount of money, time, and effort!

GOVERNMENT

Citizens and business organizations alike can save time and effort by utilizing
government websites to access products and services, apply for business permits, request
for or submit documents, pay their taxes and Social Security premiums, and for other
transactions.

LABOR

Robotics in the automotive industry improves productivity and precision.


Supercomputers help experts in analysing how to maximize labor and resources for
economic development and large databases.. Computers allow people to search and obtain
information Company websites allow their employees to log in and out of work as well as
access their attendance nd pay slips from their computers. There are software which you as
a pupil can use to search for books you can borrow from your local or school library, have
them reserved for pick up, and even track which books you borrowed and the dates they are
due for return. Indeed, ICT can perform jobs that are difficult, complex, or even impossible
for average workers to do.

COMMUNITY

When Super Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) struck Leyte in November
2013, Google set up a search engine called Person Finder which helped people locate or
get information on the condition of their relatives or loved ones in devastated areas. It was
an effective ICT tool in a time of calamity. Furthermore, ICT tools are important in
disseminating information or advisories about various events and occurrences such as
forthcoming festival, the track of typhoon, traffic conditions, water interruptions, and anti-
disease measures.
