Frequency: Frequency remains unchanged when light travels from one medium to

< HKCE 2006 Paper I - 2>
RADAR is a useful device to detect aircraft. However, the air-forces of many
countries try to build aircraft that can hide
away from their enemies. Read the following passage about a stealth bomber (see
Figure 1).
Stealth Bomber
There are some special features in the design of the
stealth bomber to make it invisible to enemy sensors.
The aircraft needs to blend in with the background
infrared sensors. Defending against radar detection, the
surface of the stealth bomber is particularly good at
absorbing radio waves. More importantly, the large flat
areas on the top and bottom of the aircraft reflect most
incoming radio waves away from the radar station in the
same manner as plane mirrors usually reflect light rays
away from light sources. In regard to infrared sensors
mentioned above, a stealth bomber has the ability to fly
almost undetected through enemy airspace.

(a) i)
Increase the separation D between the double slit and the screen.
(i) The separation of the bright dots on the screen becomes larger, thus the

Safety considerations in using laser light include ensuring the laser beam does not reach the eyes to prevent retinal damage. Additionally, warnings about reflections and diffractions that can spread laser beams across unintended paths leading to potential exposure should be included. Shields or barriers should be used to restrict the beam path, and protective eyewear manufactured for the specific laser frequency should be worn .

Microwaves are more effective in radar systems compared to lower frequency radio waves because they can better penetrate obstacles like rain, clouds, and fog, which commonly interfere with navigation and detection. Their shorter wavelength allows for higher resolution and detail, essential for accurate detection and measurement in radar technology .

Studying electromagnetic wave properties aids meteorological predictions by improving the accuracy of remote sensing and satellite data collection techniques through radar and infrared technology. In communications, understanding waves allows for the development of clearer and faster data transmission methods, such as optimizing frequency use to minimize interference and enhance signal clarity. For example, microwave technology can provide high-resolution weather imagery, and electromagnetic spectrum allocation optimizes satellite communications .

Total internal reflection occurs when light travels from a medium with a higher refractive index to one with a lower refractive index, such as from water to air, and hits the interface at an angle greater than the critical angle. When light travels from air to water, it is moving from a lower to a higher refractive index, preventing total internal reflection. For total internal reflection, the angle of incidence must be greater than the critical angle, and the wave must move from a more to a less dense medium .

Transverse waves oscillate perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer, while longitudinal waves oscillate parallel to the energy transfer. Electromagnetic waves, such as X-rays and visible light, are transverse and can travel through a vacuum. Sound waves, however, are longitudinal and require a medium to propagate .

The principle of superposition states that when two or more waves overlap, the resultant wave is the sum of the individual waves. In light waves, constructive interference occurs when the crest of one wave aligns with the crest of another, amplifying the wave amplitude. Destructive interference happens when the crest of one wave aligns with the trough of another, reducing the wave amplitude or canceling it out. This principle explains phenomena like diffraction patterns in double-slit experiments .

The critical angle is the minimum angle of incidence for which total internal reflection occurs when light travels from a medium of higher refractive index to a lower one. In optical fibers, light consistently travels at angles greater than the critical angle, ensuring it reflects internally and continues down the fiber with minimal loss. This principle allows efficient data transmission over long distances, which is central to telecommunications .

The correct order from shortest to longest wavelength is Ultra-violet rays, Visible Light, and Microwaves. Ultra-violet rays have shorter wavelengths because they have higher energy, followed by visible light which has longer wavelengths than ultra-violet rays, and finally microwaves which have the longest wavelengths of the three. This order is dependent on the energy and frequency characteristics of each type of wave .

Diffraction gratings separate light into its component wavelengths by interfering diffracted rays at specific angles. Using higher order maxima allows for more spaced out and wider patterns, making measurements more precise by reducing relative measurement errors. The separated light intensity peaks at various diffraction angles, corresponding to the different wavelengths of light .

When electromagnetic waves travel from air into water, their speed decreases, causing the wavelength to become shorter while the frequency remains unchanged. This is due to the wave's velocity being the product of its frequency and wavelength, and frequency is determined by the source and remains constant when a wave changes mediums .
