Download and Setup Instructions
1. SIMSEN Delivery e-mail
You will be notified of new SIMSEN versions per e-mail. The e-mail contains in particular the
download and setup information. In the attachment, you will also find your SIMSEN license
file valid for this version. This SIMSEN Delivery e-mail is only sent to users that are registered
as contact person by SIMSEN. Those contacts persons are responsible to distribute internally
the SIMSEN software. For the company’s internal distribution of the SIMSEN software, the
download & setup procedure (steps 1 to 5) can be reapplied or, alternatively, the folder
SIMSEN_X_Y_Z created at step 3 can be copied/pasted to other users’ PC, as described by
step 6.
2. Download [Link] executable
Using the download URL specified in the delivery e-mail, use your favorite web browser to
download the SimsenPackageSetup_X_Y_Z.exe executable file. Optionally, this could require
a download password, which you can find in your delivery e-mail.
3. Launch the [Link]
Once you have downloaded the SimsenPackageSetup_X_Y_Z.exe executable, launch it by
double clicking it. Follow the few setup steps proposed by SimsenPackageSetup_X_Y_Z.exe.
This is where you need your SIMSEN license file, that you have received in the attachments
of the delivery e-mail. SimsenPackageSetup_X_Y_Z.exe will ask you to browse to this file.
When all setup steps are completed, the SimsenPackageSetup_X_Y_Z.exe will effectively
create a folder named SIMSEN_X_Y_Z and install all files of your SIMSEN package in this
folder. The location of the folder SIMSEN_X_Y_Z is of your choice but must comply to some
the constraints. In particular, the parent folder must have the write windows access
permission (see section ‘Security considerations’ paragraph ‘SIMSEN_X_Y_Z folder location’
below).
4. Activate your SIMSEN License file
Once your SIMSEN package folder SIMSEN_X_Y_Z has been created and populated, your are
almost ready to use SIMSEN. Launch the SIMSEN graphical user interface (GUI) [Link],
which you can launch from the shortcut in the root folder of your package (or directly from
the \exe subfolder). [Link] will prompt you to enter a SIMSEN password. Use the
SIMSEN license password that you have received in the delivery e-mail. Once the SIMSEN
password has been validated by [Link], it will not ask you to enter it until the expiration
of the password’s current period. The passwords are regularly sent via e-mail to the contact
users, a few weeks before the expiration of the current period.
Note that depending on your SIMSEN license contract, you might have to plug in the SIMSEN
USB dongle (USB key) to be able to launch the SIMSEN software, in particular [Link].

6. Simplified company’s internal distribution of SIMSEN
The steps 1 to 5 above can be reproduced on any of the PC of other users in the company.
Alternatively, the SIMSEN_X_Y_Z folder created and populated at step 3 can be simply copied
and pasted to another user’s PC. This is a simplified internal distribution of the SIMSEN
software that is still supported. However, by doing so, you might miss some ‘decorative’
feature of the SimsenPackageSetup_X_Y_Z.exe, like short-cut creation, aso.
SIMSEN Updates
The download and setup procedure described above is the standard way of getting the SIMSEN
software. If your support is active, this is how you will receive SIMSEN updates. A SIMSEN update
always consists in a new and independent package, there is not a incremental update mechanism.
Alternative SIMSEN distribution
Note that when you purchase a SIMSEN license in Single User Mode, you will receive per post the
required SIMSEN USB dongle. We will put the SimsenPackageSetup_X_Y_Z.exe on the USB key as well
as the corresponding SIMSEN License file. In this case, the download of the [Link]
application described above in step 2 is not necessary and you can directly start at step 3.
Security considerations
a. Download server
The web server from where you can download the SimsenPackageSetup_X_Y_Z.exe
application is hosted in Switzerland and is either managed by Swiss authorities or by EPFL.
b. Checksum of SimsenPackageSetup_X_Y_Z.exe
In order to check the integrity of the SimsenPackageSetup_X_Y_Z.exe application that you
are invited to download from a web server, you can optionally use one of the checksum that
is written in the SIMSEN Delivery e-mail, in the download and Setup instruction.
c. Origin of package content
The SIMSEN_X_Y_Z folder contains files and executables. Almost all executables are
developed and compiled by ourselves (EPFL and PVE). The few executable files that are not
produced internally are coming from known and verified sources.
d. SIMSEN_X_Y_Z folder location
In step 3 or 6 of the download and setup procedure, you have the choice of the location of
the SIMSEN_X_Y_Z folder. Please note that this location must have read, write and execute
windows access rights for any users that will use the SIMSEN software on the PC. This
constraint prevents for example to install SIMSEN in a folder which has write restrictions for
some users without Administrative rights, like for example typically the C:\Program Files\
folder.
