Pest Control Program

Policy:

Inside and the surroundings of the factory should be free from pests.
Purpose:
• To avoid the pest harborage and infestation in the plant and all the outlets.
• To establish effective systems to control and monitor pests' infestations in the food operation.
• To establish the guidelines to take proper corrective and preventive action on case of failure of control
measure.
Scope:

All pest management requirements to the plant, warehouses, and outer areas.
Responsibility:

• All staff are responsible to inform if they noticed any pest infestation.
• QC and GM responsible for inspection and verification of proper pest management program in place.
• External pest control contracting company for treatment and their follow up visits.

Procedure:

Chemical pest control for termite is carried out on contract by pest control person:

1. The presence of rodents, insects, birds or other pests in the plant is not acceptable.
2. Ensure that pest control is done by outside parties at the identified locations in the plant.
3. It is ensured that proper care is taken during the pest control process.
4. It is ensured that all the rooms for manufacturing and storage are covered, as and when required.
5. An outside party is contracted as required, and he is responsible for all facets of termite control within the plant as
well as the grounds under suitable warrantees. Material Safety Data Sheets for all pesticides used by the company are
kept in file. During pest control of stores, all materials are removed from the storage areas or covered.
6. Good hygiene practices are employed to avoid creating an environment conducive to pests. Good sanitation,
inspection of incoming materials and effective monitoring can minimize the likelihood of infestation and thereby limit
the need for pesticides.
7. Buildings are kept in good condition and repairs are done, where needed, to prevent pest access and to eliminate
potential breeding sites.
8. Holes, drains and other places where pests are likely to gain access are kept sealed. Where sealing is not possible
(e.g., open windows, doors and ventilators) measures like wire mesh screens are in place to reduce the problem of
pest entry.
9. Dogs, cats and other animals are excluded from the grounds of factories, and totally prohibited inside processing
plants.
10. Potential food sources are stored in pest-proof containers and / or stacked above the ground and away from walls.
11. Areas, both inside and outside food premises, are kept clean.
12. The materials are stored in covered, pest-proof containers

13. Air curtains are in place to keep flying pests away.

14. Screen doors and nets are in place to keep pests away
Control Steps:

Rodents:

• Control of all kinds of pests is carried out in the factory premises to prevent contamination of product.
• The baits are kept outside the buildings and no chemicals are taken inside. The points where baits are kept
are identified clearly in a diagram. The bates are kept in the factory premises, colored for conspicuousness
and kept in the identified area with good clearance from the walls. These areas are located away from walking
paths.
• The rodent activity is monitored during housekeeping inspections. If any rat droppings or rat urine is detected,
sectional in-charges take immediate actions to control the situation by adopting appropriate measures.
Insects and birds:
• All openings like windows, doors and other gaps through which insects can come into the production areas
are completely kept sealed. The entrance door is fitted with a door closure.
• Accidental intruders like flies are trapped using electrocutes hanged inside the production floor.
• All spaces above the ceiling and under the roof are sealed to prevent birds/pests entering.
• Any insect or pest breeding sites in the compound are eliminated. Good hygiene practices are in place to
destroy pest breeding grounds around the factory.
• If any needs for fumigation or the usage of insecticides arise to control pests or other insects breading grounds,
the services of the qualified subcontractor is obtained
Harborage and infestation:

• Any production wastes are stored in pest-proof containers until disposed-off. The areas where employees take
food is kept very clean to keep pests at distance.
• Surroundings of the buildings are weekly inspected as part of the housekeeping exercise to check any evidence
of infestation.
• The food waste is not kept for long without disposal. The wastes are kept in closed bins until they are disposed-
off. The areas where these bins accumulate are kept clean.
• The monitoring of pest control system effectiveness is carried out on monthly basis. During that time the
sectional in-charges take steps to refill the bait into containers and advice on further actions required if there
are any signs of a pest encroachment. Holes, drains and other places where pests are likely to gain access are
kept sealed.

To prevent contamination issues related to rodent activity, baits are strategically placed outside the buildings, avoiding introduction of chemicals directly inside the plant. These bait locations are marked conspicuously and kept away from walking paths to ensure safety and minimize disruption . Rodent activity is closely monitored during housekeeping inspections, and any signs of rat droppings or urine trigger immediate corrective actions . The programs also emphasize housekeeping measures like sealing openings and maintaining hygiene to deter rodent presence .

Structural measures include sealing holes, drains, and other potential pest access points wherever possible. Where sealing isn't viable, wire mesh screens are used to minimize entry through open windows, doors, and ventilators . The enforcement is supported by regular inspections and immediate repair work on buildings to prevent access and eliminate breeding sites . This approach helps maintain the integrity of production environments and limits pest influx effectively.

Chemical pest control measures are implemented by contracting external pest control companies responsible for treating termite infestations and other pests. Precautions include keeping material safety data sheets for all pesticides used by the company, removing or covering all materials in storage areas during pest control, and ensuring all possible pest entry points are sealed or protected with wire mesh . Chemical baits for rodents are placed outside of the buildings, avoiding direct introduction of chemicals inside the premises, and are clearly marked on diagrams for transparency and safety .

Good hygiene practices are integral to pest management strategies as they help eliminate conditions conducive to pest infestations. These practices include regular cleaning of both internal and external areas, proper sanitation, and inspection of incoming materials to reduce the likelihood of infestation . By maintaining cleanliness, especially in areas where food waste or production by-products might accumulate, the threat of creating pest breeding grounds is significantly minimized . This synergy between hygiene and pest control ensures a more comprehensive and effective pest management system.

The pest control programs employ several strategic methods to prevent pest harborage and infestation. These include the use of chemical pest control managed by external contractors, keeping the plant free from unacceptable levels of pests like rodents, insects, and birds through thorough inspection and monitoring systems . Good hygiene practices are critical to creating an environment not conducive to pests, alongside ensuring that structural openings such as doors, windows, and ventilation systems are sealed or screened to minimize pest entry . Regular housekeeping inspections and consistent monitoring ensure that any signs of infestation are addressed promptly, with corrective measures taken immediately .

Pest control programs address accidental intrusions by flying insects by sealing openings like windows and doors and using screen doors and air curtains to prevent their entry . Additionally, electrocutes are installed inside production areas to trap and eliminate flies or other accidental flying insect intruders . These measures collectively provide a robust defense against flying pests, ensuring that production areas remain secure and uncontaminated.

When pest control measures fail, the pest control program emphasizes the need for proper corrective and preventive actions. Staff are required to report any infestations, which are then verified and inspected by QC and GM. External pest control companies may be re-engaged, warranties may be activated for repeat treatments, and additional sealing of access points and sanitation measures are reinforced . Coordination involves clear communication between factory staff, quality management teams, and external contractors to swiftly address and rectify any pest control failures.

The effectiveness of pest control systems is monitored monthly, with sectional in-charges responsible for checking bait levels and assessing signs of pest encroachment to dictate further action . Quality in-charges oversee a weekly hygiene and sanitation audit and maintain records of pest control activities such as the pest control company contract file and pest notification records . This structured approach ensures continued effectiveness and facilitates timely interventions if any issues arise.

External pest control contractors play a critical role in managing fumigation needs and the use of insecticides for pest control. Their expertise is solicited when there is a need to control pest or insect breeding grounds using fumigation procedures. The pest control program contracts these qualified subcontractors to ensure effective and safe fumigation practices, maintaining safety standards and compliance with established protocols . This collaboration is vital for addressing complex pest control scenarios that require specialized intervention.

Factory staff are responsible for reporting any pest infestation they observe, while Quality Control (QC) and General Management (GM) are tasked with inspection and verification of the pest management program's effectiveness . External pest control contractors are engaged for chemical treatment and follow-up visits; they ensure that all aspects of pest control, such as termite control within the plant and grounds, are effectively managed under suitable warranties .
