OBJECTIVE: Finds the volume of a given cube using cu. cm and cubic m.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

 Volume (V) is number of cubic units needed to fill the shape. It is the amount of
space that is occupied by a space figure.
 Since all the faces of cube are squares then the length, width, and height are all
equal.
 The volume of a cube is s x s x s or s3
 V = s3
TRY TO DISCOVER!

Look at this rubik’s cube. You will notice that there are 3
piles of cube that fit its length, 3 in its width and 3 in
its height. If you count them all, the number of cubes
fit exactly in the illustrated cube. That is also the volume
of the given figure.
So, to find the volume of cube, we just multiply the
length, the width and the height. Since there is only one
measurement in the 3 dimensions, so we can say that we
only multiply the given measurement of the side to itself
three times.
V = S x S x S or S3
V=3x3x3
33 = 27 cubic units
Example 2:
James works in a cheese factory. He is assigned in the cubic cheeses
section where he is packing little cubes of cheese that measure 1 cm on each
side. He is to put them in a bigger cube that measures 5cm on each side.
How many small cubes will fit in the bigger cube?
Solution:
To find out, let us compute for the volume of the small cube. Since each side measures 1
cm, the length, width, and height would be 1 cm as well.

s = 1 cm V = s x s x s or V = s3
= 1cm x 1cm x1cm
= 1cm3

Page 1 of 25

Name of Teacher: ____________________ Section: _______________

Hence the volume of the small cube is 1 cm3. The bigger cube measures 5
cm on each side. So, one layer of the bigger cube can accommodate 5 x 5 = 25
smaller cubes. Because it is a cube, there should be 5 layers.
Therefore, the bigger cube can contain 25 x 5 = 125 smaller cubes

Example 1.

A stockroom is 10 m long, 10 m wide, and 10 m high. How many

cubic meters of space is in the stockroom?

Solution:

Notice that the given dimensions are all equal to 10 m. This gives us the idea
that we are solving for the volume of a cube.

s = 10 m V = s x s x s or V = s3

V=sxsxs V = s3
s = 3 cm V = s x s x s or V = s3
V = 10 m x 10 m x 10 m V = (10 m)3

V = 1,000 m3 V = 1,000 m3

There are 1,000 m3 of space in the stockroom.

The volume of the Rubik’s cube is 27 cm3.

cu.m.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY

Volume is the amount of space inside a space figure. It is measured in cubic
units, the most common is cubic centimeters (cm3) and cubic meters (m3)

The volume of a rectangular prism is measured by the length times the width
times the height or use the formula V = l x w x h

LET US EXPLORE MORE

How many cubic units do this object occupy?

If each is a cubic unit or 1 cubic

centimeter, how many cubic centimeters are in
the figure? How many cubic units are there in
one row? How many rows are there? How
many cubic units are there in one layer? How
many layers are there?
To easily count the number of cubic units in
this figure, count the number of layers or the
height of the figure, then the number of cubic
units on the length and the number of cubic
units on its length, then multiply. The product is
the volume of the figure shown.

FOURTH QUARTER / WEEK 3/ DAY 3

OBJECTIVE: Estimates and uses appropriate units of measure for volume.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

To estimate volume of solid figures, we try to make the dimensions’ whole

numbers and use the appropriate units of measure.

TRY TO DISCOVER!

Read the problem and let us try to discover how we deal with our lesson.

Mr. Policarpio’s rectangular fishpond is 5.8 m long, 4 m wide and

2.1 m deep. About how many cubic meters of water is in the pond?

Who is the owner of the rectangular fishpond? - Mr. Policarpio

What will you look for in the problem? - the estimated number of cubic

meters of water or the estimated volume of water in the pond

What are the given facts? Length – 5.8 m

Width - 4m

Depth/ Height - 2.1 m

What process is needed to solve the problem? Multiplication

To solve the problem, we’re going to find the volume of the

rectangular fishpond by using the formula: V = L x W x H.

Let’s solve for the actual volume of the pond.

Volume of Rectangular Prism = Length x Width x Height

V= L x W x H

= 5.8 m x 4 m x 2.1 m

V = 48.72 𝒎𝟑

The actual volume of the fishpond is 48.72 𝒎𝟑 .

To get the estimated volume, round off the given numbers.

L = 5.8 - 6 m , W=4m, D/H = 2.1 - 2m

Page 11 of 25
MODULE CODE: PASAY-M5-Q4-W3-D3

Name: ______________________________________ Date: ___________________

Teacher: ____________________________________ Section : ________________

H=2m

W=4m

L=6m

Solution for estimated volume:

V=L x W x H

= 6m x 4m x 2m

V = 48 𝒎𝟑

Therefore, the estimated volume of water in Mr. Policarpio’s fishpond is

48 𝒎𝟑 .

Does the estimated volume is almost the same with the actual volume

of the pond?

Estimating numbers help us to calculate or determine the possible

volume of the given solid figures.

Here are some examples; estimates the volume of the following solid

figures.

1. 2. h =3.2 m

e = 5.9 cm

l = 6.5 m w = 2.4m

OBJECTIVE: Solves non-routine problems involving volume of a cube and rectangular prism
in real-life situations using appropriate strategies and tools.
YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY
A non-routine problem is any complex problem that requires some degree
of creativity or originality to solve. Non-routine problems typically do not have an
immediately apparent strategy for solving them. Oftentimes, these problems can
be solved in multiple ways.
Volume of cube = S3 or S x S x S
Volume of rectangular prism = L x W x H

TRY TO DISCOVER!

An aquarium is 100 cm long, 50 cm wide and 80 cm high. If it is filled halfway

through its height, how much volume of water is in it?

Step 1. Understand:
Read and understand. No pencil or paper necessary for this
step. Remember, you cannot solve a problem until you know what the problem is!

What is asked in the problem? The volume of water in the aquarium.

What are the needed information?

Length= 100 cm, width = 50 cm, height = 80 cm

Step 2. Plan:

Now it’s time to decide on a plan of action! Choose a reasonable problem -

solving strategy. Several are listed below. You may only need to use one
strategy or a combination of strategies.

 draw a picture or diagram

 make an organized list
 make a table
 solve a simpler related problem
 find a pattern

 guess and check

 act out a problem
 work backward
 write an equation
 use manipulatives
 break it into parts
 use logical reasoning

In our problem, we will need to draw a picture of an aquarium.

L = 100 cm H = 80 cm

W = 50 cm

What is asked in the problem is only the amount of water inside the aquarium and
not the volume of the aquarium but we need the dimensions of the aquarium.
Step 3. Solve or Execute:

Now it’s time to dig in and get to work!

V=LxW xH
= 100 cm x 50 cm x 40 cm
V = 200 000 [Link]
height of the water is only 40cm because it is only half filled

Step 4. Check or Review:

Reviewing your work is just as important as the first 3 steps! Reread the problem and
review all your work.

V = ( L x W x H) ÷ 2
= (100 cm x 50 cm x 80 cm) ÷ 2
V = 400 000 [Link] ÷ 2
V = 200 000 [Link]
Therefore, the volume of water is 200 000 [Link]

Let’s try another one.

What is the maximum number of cubes 5 cm on an edge that can be packed into
a carton with dimensions 18 cm, 32 cm, 25 cm?

The problem is asking for the number of cubes. To solve this problem, we can make a
drawing or use manipulatives.

25 cm

18 cm
32 cm

The number of cubes that can fill the box are 6 x 3 x 5 because each side of the cube is 5 cm
long.
Therefore, there are 90 cubes that can filled the carton box.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 1
Read the problem and do the needed steps.

The width of a rectangular prism is doubled, its length is tripled, and its height
is cut in half. If the volume of the original prism was V, what is its new volume?.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 2
Read and solve the following problem. Think of the strategy that will help you solve the problem
1. Each edge of a 15 cm cube is increased by 20%. What is the volume of the new cube?
2. The length of a fish tank is 20 dm. Its breadth is 4 dm and its height is 3/5 of its length. Find
the capacity of the fish tank.
3. the length of the box is 36 cm. if we cut the length into 3 parts as shown the
surface area will increase by 120 cm2. What is the volume of the box?
4. An open box with external measurements 50 cm long, 40 cm wide, and 30 cm high is made
of 2 cm thick. Find the total volume of wood required to make the open box?
5. The thickness and the volume of a square prism are 4 cm and 4624 cm3. Find the length of
the side of the base.

REMEMBER
In solving non routine problems we can used different strategies to be able to it . You
may only need to use one strategy or a combination of strategies.

 draw a picture or diagram

 make an organized list
 make a table
 solve a simpler related problem
 find a pattern
