Leadership; is the process by which a person exerts influence over other people and inspire,
motivate and direct their activities to achieve group or organizational goal. Armstrong (2009).
According to E.M Kolly, Leadership: is the process by which an agent induces a subordinate to behave in
a desired manner.
According to Stanley Baldwin, prime minister in British (1930); Leadership is a complex phenomenon
involving the leader, the followers, and the situation. Some leadership research focused on the
personality, physical traits or behavior of the leader. Others have studied the relationship between
leader and followers, still others have studies how aspect of situation affect the way of leader’s act. An
Effective leader; is the leader who have ability to execute a company’s vision and create a work culture
that allows employees to contribute meaningful to the achievement of their employee goals. Example of
effective leaders is like [Link] Nyerere, Martin Luther and Nelson Mandela. An effective leader has
its qualities or traits as described below;
Self-confidence; Leaders have a great deal of self-confidence. They attempt to make the best
decision possible and trust their own judgement. They respect others and expect quality work.
Suggested by Burrow (2004). Example Mwl. Nyerere he was confidently enough to ask for independence
from colonialist which lead to the attainment of independence in 1961. As a leader should avoid panic
and maintenance of team morale so as followers to be committed and being confident with the
directions suggested with their leader.
Cooperation; Leader understand the importance of their people and enjoying being with them,
thus they work well with others. They understand that people working together can accomplish more
than the same people working alone they work to develop cooperative relations. Suggested by Burrow
(2004). Example Dr. John Mgufuli cooperated with industrial sector to build industrial economy.
Honesty; Leaders required to be honesty and high standards of personal integrity. They are
ethical in decision making and their treatment of others. It is described by Burrow (2004). Example
Mahatma Gandhi, he was a leader who create new opportunities, acknowledge success, encourage
accountability and develop respect and appreciation. To be honest with you followers and to make the
subordinate to trust the leader.
Fairness; impartial and justice treatment without discrimination favoritism and any kind of
injustice form. Leader need to treat their followers equally, without any kind type of discrimination,
whether it is sex, position or race, tribe, region and ages. For example, a leader who distributes
resources and opportunities equally among team members. This includes sharing power and resources
fairly, making sure everyone has a voice and being fair in their judgement. They look for alignment
among people and teams, trying to create the most mutually effective outcome.
Willingness to accept consequences of decision; as a leader needs to agree the outcomes or
result which happen without to complain to the followers when there is unsupported outcomes so it
needs to know how to find the alternative to solve the problems which happen and when is successful
outcomes you need to make more efforts so as to perform best. Example, John Pombe Magufuli, tend to
solve the problem occurs in a country like Covid-19(2020), provided the best means to avoid the
spreading of the pandemic disease.
Willingness to tolerate frustration and delay; According to stogdill (1974), as leader have ability
to withstand obstacles and stressful situations, an effective leader should have a strong willingness to
tolerate failures especially when the goals, expectations become failed. A leader need to cope with the
environment of what should be happen and make the solution of how to handle the situation. Example
a leader need to be tolerative to the hospitals when there is scarcity of medicine and adopting the
suitable means of solving the problem.
Humility; The situation o being humble, and the site of arrogance, hence a good, or effective
leader required to have the humble tendency towards his or her subordinate the my create a positive
image of a leader towards the subordinates. Example being a good listener and not overwhelmed by
ego.
Creativity; Leaders should be able to use imagination and use original thinking, they should not
always to be there to follow instructions but always be there and creating new solutions and new ideas.
Hence a qualified leader required to be creative regarding to the situation. Example during hard
situation and during good season should create the best referring to the situation.
Openness; involves the situation of sharing the information, thoughts and feelings. A good and
effective leader they need or must be having the character of sharing the information with his or her
subordinate about day to day circumstance and day to day roles. Example, the data on the use of the
resources available, this can improve the trustiness of the subordinate to the leader.
Generally; The effectiveness of the leader has it benefits like, it contribute to the building of the
team work, commitment, swift decision making, improve communication system between leader and
followers and lead to the attainment of the company vision. Hence an effective leader determined
regarding to his or her qualities/traits and its practices.
