About the Institute

The Department of Higher and Technical Education, Govt. of Maharashtra taking a visionary
step started Government Institute of Forensic Science, Aurangabad in August 2009 with a
special Government resolution to cater Higher Education and Research in the field of
Forensic Science. The Institute is housed in the campus of Govt. Institute of Science,
Aurangabad, which is a picturesque campus in the vicinity of Aurangabad caves sprawled in
an area of 21 acres. The Institute is one of the leading Institutes in the country which imparts
quality education and research in various domains of Forensic Sciences. The Institute also
imparts training to police officers and officials on various topics including Crime Scene
Investigation and Digital Forensics and also scientifically investigate the evidences and
provide our opinion to police officers. The Institute has well-equipped State-of-art
laboratories and sophisticated instrumentation facilities for all the major disciplines of
Forensic Sciences.

Need of Forensic Science Education

The crime scenario is rapidly changing around the globe. The latest technologies are used by
the criminals to commit crimes smartly and remotely, which is affecting every common man
in the society. A common man is encountered at every walk of life. Thus, there is a need to
produce skilled human resources to encounter the increasing challenges by the criminals.
Education in Forensic Sciences may help in producing such human resources.

Forensic Science is a multi-disciplinary science, which involves applications of science and

technology to the legal (criminal and civil) matters. Theory and principles of scientific
disciplines, such as, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Forensic Science and Computer Sciences
are utilized to investigate a crime and to reach a conclusion about the criminal activities and
commission of crime.

At global level, there are various Institutions, which impart training and research in the
various domains of Forensic Sciences. Thereby, in developed countries, Forensic Science is
an indispensible discipline to generate skilled human resources for criminal justice delivery
system. India in general and the State of Maharashtra in particular have taken similar
initiatives to start Forensic Science Institutions. Government Institute of Forensic Science,
Aurangabad is one of them. The Institute is one of the best Institutions in the country. The
academic programs in the Institute have been designed as per the need of stake-holders. The
syllabus for each academic program was designed by the experts from academia and
industries to provide the best education in Forensic Science as per the need of hour.

The Director

Dr. S. G. Gupta is presently working as the Director of the

Institute since 2010. Dr. Gupta has 22 years of UG & PG
teaching and research experience in Microbiology and Biotechnology. Dr. Gupta has
published more than 60 research papers. Under his guidance 7 students were awarded Ph.D.
and 6 Students are doing research. He had an immense administrative experience as Director
of State Institute of Administrative Careers, Mumbai, Joint Director of Higher Education,
Mumbai Region ,Mumbai ,Principal , Government College of Arts and Science ,Aurangabad
,Director, Pre- IAS, Training Institute, Aurangabad, Officer on Special Duty and Registrar of
National Law University,Aurangabad and as an administrator of a aided women college,
Dhule affiliated to S.N.D.T. ,University Mumbai

Academic Units

The Institute is having seven departments, namely, Forensic Science, Forensic Physics,
Forensic Chemistry, Forensic Biology, Forensic Psychology, Digital and Cyber Forensics and
Law. All the departments are involved in quality teaching using smart technologies and
innovative research in their respective area. The departments participate in regular discussion
through in-house seminars and lecture series among themselves and truly involved in inter-
disciplinary activities.

Department of Forensic Science

Department of Forensic Science is the leading department of the Institute. The department is
essentially involved with Crime Scene investigation (CSI), examination of questioned
documents and fingerprint analysis. Moreover, the department helps other departments for
forensic related examination and research in allied disciplines. The department is having
world class instrumentation facilities in the field of CSI, document examination and
fingerprint analysis. To name a few, VSC 6000/HS, ESDA-2, MVC 1000, Crime-lite,
cynoacrylate, fumigation chamber, stereomicroscope and several kits. Recently, the
department has developed Multimedia Forensics facilities which is involved in forensic
speaker identification, audio, video and image authentication and enhancement of multimedia
files including CCTV footage.

The Department is involved in imparting training in the field of Ballistics, physics,

photography, noise level monitoring and trace evidence analysis (glass, paint, wire, cable,
electric meter, electronic circuit).Apart from various basic instruments related to physics and
electronics, the department is equipped with modern state-of-the-art instruments, such as
Raman Spectrophotometer, Radioactivity Measurement Device, Densitometer, Noise
Measurement apparatus and ballistic comparison microscope.

Department of Forensic Chemistry

The department provides training in examination of pesticides/insecticides, toxins, explosives

and their derivatives, narcotics drugs and psychotropic substances and metals. The
department also provides training to examine adulteration in food material, edible oil and
petroleum products. The department is equipped with all the modern chromatographic and
spectroscopic instruments, such as Gas chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometer (GC-MS),
UV-Visible spectrophotometer, High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), FTIR
Spectrophotometer, Visual melting point apparatus, Densitometer, Vacuum evaporator,
Thermal Gravimetric Analyzer (TGA), and Flame Photometer besides the basic equipments
related to chemical analysis.

The department is dedicated to training in the area of examination of various biological

fluids, serological testing, entomological, microbiological, limnological, and enzymatic
studies, isolation, amplification and identification of DNA samples from various sources, and
analysis of pathogenic bacteria, fungi, plant and their toxins. The department also gives
training in Wild life Forensics, which includes examination of hair, nails, feathers, skin of
wild animals for their identification. The department is equipped with sophisticated
equipments like biological comparison microscope, Microtome, Thermal cycler,
Electrophoresis units, Gel documentation system, Bio-safety cabinet, Water purification
system, High speed refrigerated centrifuge, BOD incubator, Orbital incubator shaker, Deep
fridge and various modern microscopes and molecular biological kits in addition to basic

Digital and Cyber Forensic department is well equipped with Laboratories having 25

Department of Forensic Psychology

The department is involved in teaching and research in the area of forensic psychology. The
department is well equipped with various Psychological testing apparatus which includes Lie
detector (polygraph), depth perception apparatus, and around 50 different psychological tests.
The department conducts various tests for analysis of IQ, logical reasoning, memory,
mathematical ability, thematical perception test and behavioural profiling.

Admission Criteria
 Admission to the above mentioned courses will be strictly on the basis of merit and
prevailing reservation policies of the State Government/ Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar
Marathwada University, Aurangabad.

Graduate Common Entrance Test) 2018-19 conducted by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar

 Admission to [Link]. Forensic Science is based on merit and reservation. Aggregate
percentage of 12th will be considered for admission. If the aggregate percentage of the
two candidates is the same, marks of science subjects will be considered for tie-
breaking. Further, tie-breaking will be done on basis of marks of 10th and age (older
will be preferred).
 Similarly, admission to PG Diploma programs is based on merit and reservation.
Aggregate percentage of Bachelor degree will be considered for admission. Tie-
breaking will done on the basis of marks of 12th, 10th and age (older will be preferred).

The Institute has adequate infrastructure for the academic programs offered by the Institute.

Library
The Institute has a separate well furnished
automated library with over 3000 text books,
reference books, periodicals, encyclopaedia
and journals dedicated to Forensic Science
studies. Moreover, the library is also
connected with National online resources,
which comprises more than 5 lakhs e-
resources in terms of National/International;
e-journals and e-books. The library has also
separate study rooms for boys, girls and
faculty members.

Well furnished classrooms

The Institute has five well furnished
classrooms with a seating capacity of 50
students. The modern teaching-learning aids
are being used routinely which includes
projector, LCD and interactive boards.
Moreover, the campus is well connected with
internet, which is being availed by the
students, faculty members and office staffs
for their regular work and teaching-learning
process.

Multipurpose Hall
The Institute is also having a multipurpose
hall of seating capacity 400. The hall is
acoustically designed and equipped with
audio-video and internet facility. The hall is
used to arrange Seminars, Symposia,
Conferences, Workshops and annual social
gathering. The multipurpose hall is also used
to play indoor games.

Boys and Girls Hostel

The Institute is having a separate boys and girls hostels. Though the Institute has hostel

The Institute also organize summer and winter internship for their students to various leading
Forensic Science laboratories of the
