Title: Traffic Surveillance at Oakes Field Roundabout

Name: Kendice Major

Candidate Number:
School: [Link] Senior High
Date:
CHAPTER ONE:
DATA
PRESENTATION
Introduction
According to Google a Roundabout are a type of circular intersection which promotes slow and
consistent vehicle speeds entering, circulating, and exiting the intersection. They differ from rotaries

This
because of their smaller size, slower speeds, and lack of lane changes within the intersection .

investigation is focused on Traffic Surveillance,

done by the 11th and 12th grader geography
students of [Link] Senior High School. This
study was conducted as partial fulfillment of
requirements for the Bahamas General Certificate
of Secondary Education. This investigation was
completed at The Oakes Field Roundabout on
Tuesday October 22nd during the hours of 11:00am
and 3:00pm.
The objective of surveillance includes: 1)
Identifying the busiest street and the most popular
vehicle type. 2) Compare the Traffic Flow between
10:00-11:00am and 12:00pm. 3) Determine the
more popular gender among the drivers. 4) Asses
the flow of traffic between the entrance and exits
on the roundabout. We were seeking to prove
that: 1) University Drive is the busiest street. 2)
Private Cars are the most popular vehicle type. 3)
The Roundabout is busier between 11:30 and
12:30pm. 4) There are more Male than female
drivers using this Roundabout.
Methodology
-Pre Field Work

We choose our coursework topic out of a list of

numerous others we had covered, and learned
from 10th grade. We had a negotiation associating
with the objectives and hypothesis of this
investigation, and also how it could best be
attained. We were instructed to purchase a
notebook beneficial to recording and storing all
activities and observations of the study.
In addition we also obtained permission slips
from the head office in order to be able to leave
the campus and conducting our study. After
receiving the approval from the office, consent
letters were given out to each student
participating in this study. Next every student
were divided into groups of six, with each group
containing the minimum of two 11th graders.
Furthermore a group leader was chosen in every
group to direct and oversee their group members.
Moreover each group leader gave their group
members a task which was responsible for
counting a certain type of vehicle.

CHAPTER 2 ANALYSIS
The purpose of this chapter is to explain the data
collected shown through the graphs and tables from
chapter one. I will discuss the objectives achieved and
whether or not the hypotheses was proven true or false.
Also to give reasons as to why these hypotheses were
proven true or false.

The Busiest Street

Graph 1 ‘The Busiest Street’ is found on page 9 of this
report. This graph describes the data received for
objective one (1). This graph shows the busiest street
with poinciana drive being the busiest street for the first
and second count which totaled up to 4132.
The hypothesis university drive is the busiest street was
proven false. Poinciana drive was the busiest street
because it had 37% of the traffic flow on that street.
University drive along with the other streets all had 21%.
I believe Poinciana drive was the busiest because it leads
to many communities/neighborhoods for example, Bain
and Grants Town and Big pond. Poinciana drive is also
where one of entrances for the university of The
Bahamas is located and this can perhaps contribute to
the traffic flow. Another factor that can possibly
contribute to poinciana drive being the busiest street is
that it leads to many major roads such as Baillou road
Market street and East street .
Most popular vehicle type
Graph 2 “Most popular vehicle type” is found on page 10
of this report . This graph explains the data collected for
objective (2). This graph shows the most popular vehicle
type with private cars being the most popular vehicle
type. During the first count Poinciana street has the
highest number of vehicles in total having 4,132 number
of cars. The least amount of vehicles were found on
carter street which was 2,316. All streets except for
Poinciana numbers were very close between 2,300 and
2,375.
Hypotheses proved true. Private cars are the most
popular vehicle type because driving your own vehicle
instead of using public transportation provides safety and
it’s comforting. A group of persons can be going in
different directions. Also adolescents prefer to own a
vehicle before they finish high school.
Traffic Flow
Graph 3 “Traffic flow” is found on page 11 of this report.
This graph demonstrates the time in which the amount
of vehicles were present on the roundabout. As shown
the results received shows that more vehicles were
counted between the hours of 11:30 – 12:30 pm.
However the difference between the first and second
count is 308. The first counting we received 5,726
vehicles on the other hand we received 5,418 vehicles on
the second counting. It appears that the traffic flow was
moderately consistent throughout the day. Excluding for
where the second counting was higher at University
Drive and Carter Street.
The hypothesis proved true. The roundabout is busier at
11:00 and 12:00 because persons have to be to work.
Fast food restaurants just open so person would
purchase the dood whiles it’s fresh. Also most students
at University of The Bahamas schedule their classes for in
the morning.
Genders of driver
Graph 4 “Genders of drivers” is found on page 12 of this
report. This graph represent the genders driving the car at
different stations. In total there were 3,172 females and
4,194 males (7,366 males and females with in total ). The
difference between male and females are extremely high
1,022 males than females. At each station there were
more males then females except for at the 3rd and 4th
station. There were 210 males and 220 females on the
third station. On the other hand there were 505 males and
there were 515 females on the fourth station. The
difference between male and female at the third and
fourth station were similar to each other. There were 10
more females on the third and fourth station.
Hypothesis proven inconclusive. This was because the
vehicles were moving quickly that interfered with our
vision to make out the gender of the driver. Also the
vehicles were heavily tinted this made it impossible to
determine the gender of the driver. Also outsiders were
interfering with students on different stations. This
distracted them from counting the genders of drivers

CHAPTER THREE
Prove hypothesis
Most of the hypothesis was proven true in this study however one was proven false
and the other was proven inconclusive. The first hypothesis was university drive
is the busiest street. This hypothesis is proven false. Based on the data we collected it
shows that Poinciana Drive was actually the busiest street.
The second hypothesis was proven true. Private cars are the most popular vehicle
type.
The third hypothesis was proven true. The roundabout is most busiest around
11:30 – 12:30.
The fourth and final hypothesis was proven to be inconclusive. ‘There were more
male drivers than females using this roundabout “.. This was proven to be
inconclusive because the total numbers of drivers counted was much less than the
vehicle counted.

All of the objectives were fully achieved. Except for objective number three.
“Determine the more popular genders among the drivers

Conducting in this study the main methods used includes counting and tallying. Other
methods used includes observation, sketching and group work. Observation was used
to observe the flow of traffic and license plates of each vehicle. Sketching was done to
sketch the roundabout appearance. Group work was done to make sure all areas of the
roundabout was covered. The methods used in this study is very effective because
they helped us achieved what we was seeking for.

Summary of results
Whiles conducting in this study I’ve learned a number of things. Firstly I’ve learned
that there were more then one license plate. I’ve also learned that the different color
license play have different meaning. For example, red license plate means that the
vehicle is a government vehicle. I’ve never realized that there were so many different
company vehicles.

Admission of errors
There was quite a few errors and problems faced conducting in this study. Errors
include: 1) some persons stop counting at their stations. This made the count in
accurate. 2) the group started this investigation later than expected. 3) some persons
car tints were too dark. This made it impossible to determine the gender of the driver.
Aside from there being errors made there were also problems faced. They include 1)
people from outside of our group were interfering and the group got distracted from
what they were supposed to do. 2) speeding is also a problem . This is because
speeding made it hard to determine the gender of the driver.
Future work recommendations

I’d recommend that a police officer should be place at the Oakes field roundabout to
direct traffic and make it move more quickly. I’d also recommend that the government
alternative transportation infrastructure, such as bus lanes, bike lanes, and sidewalks,
can provide travel options outside private vehicles. In addition food restaurants can be
relocated because fast food drive thru for example Kentucky. Their drive thru backs
up traffic because whiles persons waiting in line for food the other persons that’s not
getting food has to wait until traffic is cleared.
