HISTORY OF SOFTBALL

Softball originated in Chicago on Thanksgiving Day, 1887. A group of about

twenty young people gathered in the Farragut Boat Club gym to hear the
score of the Harvard vs. Harvard football game. Yale. After Yale's victory
was announced and bets were paid, a man grabbed a lost boxing glove
and threw it at someone, who hit him with a pole. George Hancock,
generally considered the inventor of Softball, shouted, "Let's play ball!" He
tied the boxing glove so that it resembled a ball, chalked a diamond on the
floor (smaller dimensions than a baseball field to fit in the gym), and broke
a broom handle to serve as a bat. What proceeded was a smaller version
of baseball. That game now, 111 years later, known as the first softball
game. Softball might have considered its death on the day it was born if it
hadn't been for Hancock if he wasn't fascinated by it. Within a week, he
created an oversized ball and an undersized rubber-tipped stick and went
back to the gym to paint permanent white lines on the floor. After he
wrote new rules and named the sport Indoor Baseball, a more organized
one, with everything still new, the game was played. Its popularity was
immediate.

SOFTBALL HELMET
Its function is to protect the batter 's head during his turn at bat . A
baseball traveling at the average speed with which it is typically thrown by
professional pitchers - 90 miles per hour , which is about 145 kilometers
per hour - becomes a projectile that can cause serious injuries, even fatal
injuries when thrown. It is produced with wrong aim, either accidentally or
intentionally.
CATCHER PROTECTIONS
Protection The construction of personal protective equipment has evolved
over the years. With the game uniform, the catcher uses some items
unique to this position.
Helmet. The helmet is a bit similar to that used by hitters.
Mask . It has a cushioning perimeter that accommodates the outside of
the face. The part that protects the face and allows vision is made of
resistant and rigid metal.
Throat protection. This has been implemented, some being longer and
more mobile, hanging from the bottom of the mask, and others shorter
and more rigid as part of the mask.
Overalls . They dress to protect the chest, sternum and abdomen, and
there are some that offer additional protection for the genitals, as they
are extended.
Medicinal shell . Protection for the testicles.
Kneepads . Knee, shin and instep protectors.
Mitten . The catcher's mitt can be identified by its characteristic design.
UNIFORM
Most baseball uniforms have the names and numbers of the players who
wear them printed on their backs.
