An annual study in the UK by management consultants Grant Thornton, estimates the main
proximal causes oI divorce based on surveys oI matrimonial lawyers.
|61|
The main causes in 2004 were:
O Adultery; Extramarital sex; InIidelity - 27
O Domestic violence - 17
O idliIe crisis - 13
O Addictions, e.g. alcoholism and gambling - 6
O orkaholism - 6
According to this survey, husbands engaged in extramarital aIIairs in 75 oI cases; wives in
25. In cases oI Iamily strain, wives' Iamilies were the primary source oI strain in 78,
compared to 22 oI husbands' Iamilies. Emotional and physical abuse were more evenly split,
with wives aIIected in 60 and husbands in 40 oI cases. In 70 oI workaholism-related
divorces it was husbands who were the cause, and in 30, wives. The 2004 survey Iound that
93 oI divorce cases were petitioned by wives, very Iew oI which were contested. 53 oI
divorces were oI marriages that had lasted 10 to 15 years, with 40 ending aIter 5 to 10 years.
The Iirst 5 years are relatively divorce-Iree, and iI a marriage survives more than 20 years it is
unlikely to end in divorce.
The age at which a person gets married is also believed to inIluence the likelihood oI divorce;
delaying marriage may provide more opportunity or experience in choosing a compatible
partner.

Good Divorce?
elix berto
I have laid out some arguments on why I think divorce is not an option at this point so now I am
here to point out the good eIIects oI divorce. As we all know, the Philippines is one oI the Iew
countries who has not passed the divorce bill and we can clearly see that our catholic orientation
has been a dominant Iactor. In my previous arguments, I have stated that divorce is a way Ior
couples to take marriage Ior granted. Given this, ilipino Catholics (especially the devout ones)
tend to oppose the divorce bill. arriage is not something that should be taken Ior granted and I
truly believe that any problem between the married couple could be solved given the right
opportunity. But what iI the problem is beyond the couple`s ability to compromise? Do they still
have to Iorce things and make it work even though they have no possible solution to their
problems?
OI course annulment is always a choice that every couple can make in order to achieve legal
separation but is annulment enough Ior the growing amount oI separation cases in the country?
Here is why I think divorce should be implemented in the Philippines. irst and Ioremost,
divorce unlike annulment is an easier way to end thing between the couple. You might think that
divorce can jeopardize the sacredness oI marriage but I think the same can also be true with
annulment. y second point is, Divorce is so much Iaster than annulment. In annulment, a lot oI
investigation must happen in order Ior the separation to materialize but in divorce, the consent oI
the couple is enough. Annulment is more costly than divorce since it takes a long time to process
than divorce. Given this, we can clearly see that divorce is a timely option Ior the ilipino people
because majority oI the population are suIIering Irom poverty.
A broken Iamily is a bad situation Ior any child or parent but a whole Iamily that is trying to
pretend that everything is okay is even worse. I am not saying that a divorce is necessary Ior
every broken marriage; all I am trying to say is iI saving the marriage is not already an option
then maybe the best way to end things is through the easiest way. I am a devout catholic and I
still think that we must preserve the sanctity oI marriage but iI things are not working out Ior
everyone then I guess that it is time to Iace reality and make things easier Ior everyone. I also
know that the easy way out is not always the best way but in situations that involve the welIare
oI everyone in the Iamily, I think the easy and the Iast way should always be prioritized.
At this point, I am still not pro divorce bill but this article made me see the good things we can
get Irom the bill. OI course, the negative eIIects still outweigh the good ones but I am conIident
that in time we will all reap the good beneIits oI the divorce bill.
