Manufacturing Process Roadmaps Explained

The document describes process sheets and route sheets, which are management tools for planning the production of parts. Process sheets specify the manufacturing details of a component, while route sheets describe the sequence of machines and processes required. Generalized notions about process sheets:
purpose and use.
► Manufacturing process planning is an activity that must be carried out through
the manufacturing team. This work team must be made up of drawing experts
and personnel who understand the manufacturing processes that can be carried
out within the plant.

► Teamwork produces three production management tools known as:

► Process sheet
► Roadmap
► Operations Sheet
These tools are essential to guarantee efficient and economic production. These
tools must be dynamic, that is, changing every time an improvement can be
implemented.
It is important that the design group relies on the manufacturing group to know the
materials and production process. So that the designer responds to a planned need
for demand and makes it compatible with the materials and resources of the plant.
The selected material determines the manufacturing processes to be used. It is clear
that if a designer intends to design metal parts in a plastic injection environment,
there will be a greater conflict.
• According to Groover a typical processing sequence to manufacture a separate part
consists of:
1. A basic process
One or more secondary processes
2. Operations to improve physical properties.
Finishing operations
3.
The basic process establishes the initial geometric configuration. Child processes
4. partially modify this configuration. The operations to improve the physical properties
provide an adjustment to better adapt to the application that will be given and the
finishing operations will allow adherence to the proposed tolerances and roughness in
addition to determining possible coatings.
An example is a gearbox shaft, where the basic operation is a turning that generates
the main geometry. The secondary operation would be the carving of the keyways.

► The activities described above are reflected in the process sheet, which is a
format in which the manufacturing details of a component are specified. It
is derived from the technical drawing and allows the processing sequence
of a part to be recorded to obtain a final product.
It is subsequently
subjected to a
quenching and tempering heat treatment to increase the hardness of the material and
finally a grinding process to achieve the final dimensions and finishes.

1.3 Generalized notions about roadmaps: purpose and use.

► The concepts seen in the previous topic must be reflected in the route sheets, which describe the machines
and processes to which the initial material will be subjected.
How to work with route sheets
► Routings are used to plan production work. It is advisable to carry out global or partial planning of activities
using these tools, if what is planned:
► It consists of work that must be performed routinely and for which the use of the same machines and the same
tools is always required.
► It contains constant and unique parameters in each activity.
Before routings can be used for planning, they must have been previously created in the system by the planner
and must describe recurring operations in detail.
► It is required to manufacture an axle for a lathe gearbox, with specific dimensions according to a technical
drawing from an AISI 4140 steel bar and with part number S2110-034. From this data the manufacturing
sequence is determined:
1. Turning of the piece with oversizes. A first manufacturing drawing is generated with the appropriate
dimensions for turning, considering that the piece will suffer deformations with thermal treatments.
2. Milling of keyways for assembly of the gears.
3. Tempered to raise the hardness of the material to HRC55 hardness
4. Tempered to eliminate stresses.
5. Grinded to achieve the dimensions established in the technical drawing.
6. Quality control according to sampling. The machines and equipment to be used
are:
• Mechanical saw with code SM1 .
• TM1 lathe.
• FR2 milling machine.
• HI1 tempering homo.
• HI3 tempering furnace.
• RC1 Circular Grinding Machine.
• Measuring instruments ( Micrometer )
MC
The sections of the plant where the equipment is located are:
• Machining: in this section you will find mechanical saws, lathes, milling machines and grinding
machines.
• Furnaces: Where the quenching and tempering furnaces are located.
• Quality control: Where the instrumentation is located and tests are done.

► In this type of management tools, the number of pieces to be worked on is also specified, along with
observations that determine the characteristics of the product in each operation. Likewise, the time that
the piece will be in each station is specified to detect bottlenecks and make decisions that increase the
efficiency of the production process.

► Below is an example of a route sheet for the manufacture of an axis of each speed for a lathe, aiming for
a manufacturing goal of 145 pieces per day.
