Understanding Danger and Risk Types

This document describes the concepts of hazard and risk, and provides information on how to identify them. Explains that a hazard is a situation that can cause harm, while risk is the probability that a hazard will cause harm under certain conditions. In addition, it classifies dangers into visible, hidden and developing, and risks into high, medium and low. Finally, it offers methods to identify hazards such as inspections, interviews, and job analysis.

DANGER AND RISK

DANGER.- Situation or intrinsic characteristic
of something capable of causing damage to
people, equipment, process and
environment.
RISK.- Probability that a danger will
materialize under certain conditions and
cause damage to people, equipment and the
environment. 2
Types of HAZARDS and
Types of RISKS

TYPES TYPES
DANGERS OF RISKS

1 .- Visible 1 .- High risk

2 .- Hidden 2 .- Medium Risk

3.-In 3 .- Low risk
development
TYPES OF HAZARDS
1 VISIBLE HAZARDS
te Those that are seen, heard, smelled or tested by the
inspection team. Examples: Hanging bench, fireplace
without grill, bare cable.
TYPES OF HAZARDS

2 HIDDEN DANGERS

Those that are NOT seen, that are NOT felt.

They require an inspection list (Check list).
Examples: Carbon monoxide, bags of water,
cut shot.
TYPES OF HAZARDS
3 DEVELOPING HAZARDS
Those that worsen over time may NOT be detected beyond
measure.
Examples: Structural damage to a building, Support with
wooden frames, Wear on Winch Cables.

TERMINOLOGY
■ ENERGY SOURCES: All dangerous energies that
we may encounter in the workplace
WHITE: People, Teams, Processes, environment
environment, in other words everything that can be
affected
■ CONTROLS: Measures used to eliminate,
control the harmful impact of negative energies or
dangers
■ CONSEQUENCES: refers to the result, if any, of
contact with the source of negative energy
TARGETS / CONTROL MEASURES
1. DESIGN – Eliminate danger or risk
2. ENGINEERING OR SAFETY DEVICES – Include measures to
control the danger or risk
3. SIGNS, ALARMS, SIGNS, DEMARCATION – Automatic
measures that warn of risk (smoke detector)
4. ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROLS – Policies, Standards,
Procedures, Security Systems, PETS
5. - PPE.- Use of personal safety equipment. 13

QUESTIONS
■ What sources of hazards
exist in the area?
■ What amounts and types of energies are present?
■ What are the directions of desired and unwanted
energy flows?
■ Are the energies under control?
Consider: Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Noise,
Gravity, Radial, Thermal
■ What are the targets of unwanted energy?
■ Is the work process correct?
Consider: Competent people, Safe work practices,
Controlled work environment.
■ What are the accident scenarios and what control
measures are there to prevent them?
IDENTIFICATION METHODS
OF HAZARDS
■ Incident Investigations
■ Accident Statistics
■ Inspections
■ Discussions, interviews Safe work
analysis Audits
■ Check list
■ STOP program
Finding the dangers:
When you are locating
dangers, consider:
If the elements to be used in the work are
appropriate.
How many people can be injured by the
equipment, machinery or tools.
How many people can be injured by falling
rocks, noise, fumes, etc.
How many people use the equipment and
materials.
List all the dangers you can and the degree of
danger in your opinion.
HOW WE REALIZE
THE DANGERS ?
When you do a job ask yourself:

■ What exactly am I going to do?

■ What materials will I work with?
■ What equipment and tools will I use?
■ When will I do the work?
■ How does the activity to be carried out
affect people, equipment, materials or the
environment?

USEFUL QUESTION
WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF
If the rock is loose?
Do I slip?
■ Are there sparks?
■ Are the valves leaking?
■ Inadequate tools and in poor condition?
Do the fans stop?
Inadequate PPE?
