Around the Coast of Ecuador

Driving along the coastal region in Ecuador, it was one of the most exciting experiences of
my life. This route is called ¨Ruta del Spondylus¨. Here are numerous beautiful beaches,
lovely towns, different cultures and several ecosystems. The major beach towns along the
Ecuadorian coast that you can visit are: Salinas, considered by many to be Ecuador’ best
beach resort; Montañita, famous for its surfing and hippie culture; or the large commercial
and fishing port city of Manta.
Today I am going to talk about the last time I went to Montañita. This place is a small
commune and beach located in the province of Santa Elena in Ecuador. On the holiday of
October 9, my friends and I went to this incredible and stunning beach in Ecuador. We had
planned this trip 2 months ago. We went in the van of one of my friends. I had gone to
Montañita twice with my family but in my experience this place is not to go with your
parents. We left from Cuenca to Montañita at 6 am. It was an amazing and funny trio because
along the way we had fun singing and contemplating the wonderful landscapes that Ecuador
has. above all, on this trip we crossed from the mountains to the coast. During the route we
were able to contemplate the Pacific Ocean, the sea, the incredible waves, we passed through
wonderful towns and even we saw the waves because it was whale mating season - it was the
experience of a life.
When we finally arrived in Montañita we headed to Selina hotel, we had already booked the
hotel before. Hotels here are very picturesque and affordable.
This one was average, not impressive, but it had a pool, bar and games area. The only
incredible thing was that the hotel had direct access to the beach. We stayed there all
weekend. The first day we enjoyed the beach, we ate lunch. The cuisine there was
unbelievable especially its ceviches are very delicious. My favorite is seafood. There are a lot
of ¨carretas de comida¨ these are like food carts with a lot of yummy dishes. There are many
restaurants too, but I prefer these places because they are cheap too. The weather was very
hot, so we spent the rest of the day sunbathing and drinking beer because the weather was
perfect.

Montañita has an amazing nightlife, there are great parties at night and you could see people
dancing in the discos and even on the beach, because Montañita is the favorite destination for
foreigners, so we can meet people from different countries. That night we met 2 foreigners
from Germany, they were very friendly. Later we went dancing and visited “Alcatraz” , a
night club which looked like a real jail. The entry was free until 11:00 pm. The party for us
ended at 6 am and we returned to the hotel to rest.

The next day my best friend and I took surfing lessons because the rest of my friends were
hungover. As I said before, Montañita is a town well known for its surfing, with waves for
beginners to waves for professional surfers, the waves there are mind-blowing. The class cost
20 dollars and they taught us the basic instructions to be able to surf. It was difficult but in the
end I was able to get on the surfboard.

Finally we returned to Cuenca at 6pm, without first buying some [Link] are lots of
Handicraft shops, where you can buy beautiful crafts.
I had a great time with my friends

The influx of foreign tourists in Montañita likely boosts local economies through increased demand for hospitality services, food, and entertainment. Local businesses, from hotels to restaurants and handicraft shops, benefit from the higher tourist spending. This leads to potential job creation and economic growth. Additionally, foreign currency inflow strengthens the local market and can incentivize investments in infrastructure and service improvements to cater to the growing tourist demands .

Montañita is characterized by its vibrant nightlife and surfing culture. Its well-known nightclubs, such as 'Alcatraz,' contribute to its reputation as a nightlife hub. During the day, Montañita offers diverse surfing experiences, ranging from beginner to professional level waves, making it a prime destination for surfers .

Montañita's dual focus on foreigners and locals could drive diverse infrastructure needs to support a range of amenities. To accommodate foreigners, improvements in hospitality services, transportation, and communication networks might be necessary. Local needs may emphasize maintaining cultural sites and preserving ecological balance. Future development must integrate these varying needs to facilitate sustainable growth, balancing tourism influx with preserving local culture and environment .

Montañita could preserve its authenticity by implementing sustainable tourism practices such as promoting local businesses to ensure economic benefits remain localized. Encouraging eco-friendly accommodations and infrastructure could minimize environmental impact. Additionally, investing in cultural exchange programs can help maintain local traditions while embracing multicultural interactions. Education and awareness initiatives for both tourists and locals can also foster respect for Montañita's cultural heritage and natural resources .

The observation of natural phenomena, such as whale mating season, amplifies the appeal of Montañita by offering unique wildlife experiences in addition to the standard beach and surfing attractions. Such opportunities can attract wildlife enthusiasts and those interested in ecotourism, providing additional reasons to visit beyond traditional tourism activities. This enriches the visitor experience, positioning Montañita as a destination that offers more than just recreational activities, blending natural wonders with leisure .

Accommodations in Montañita, such as the Selina hotel, contribute to the tourist experience by providing affordable lodging directly connected to the beach, enhancing convenience for visitors. Montañita distinguishes itself with its surfing and nightlife culture, attracting an international crowd. Comparatively, Salinas is considered Ecuador's best beach resort, offering a more resort-oriented experience, while Manta is a large commercial port city, which adds a different economic and cultural atmosphere to its coastal experiences.
