INTRO Good day young scientists! Are you excited for a fun learning session for
today? Together, let’s explore the mysteries of the world through Science. I’m at
your service, Teacher Rubelyn M. Baquiran of Tapel Elementary School, Gonzaga
East District, and I will give you another exciting lesson through podcast that you
will surely enjoy. Come on and have fun!
Review Before we start with our new lesson, let’s have a review on our previous
lesson. What is the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates?
-VERTEBRATES are animals with backbone.
-INVERTEBRATES are animals without backbone.
Presentation Our topic for today is all about characteristics of vertebrates. Vertebrates are
group according to their common characteristics. They are divided into five
classifications. We have MAMMALS, BIRDS, FISH, AMPHIBIANS and
REPTILES.
Discussion Let us first discuss about mammals. (The teacher will let the children hear
different sounds of animals like cow, dog and cat). Class, did you hear that? The
sounds that you heard came from cow, dog and cat). Can you describe the body
coverings of these animals? Yes, they have fur and hair on their bodies. Class,
remember that mammals have fur and hair on their bodies. How about this
animals? (goat, pig and horse)These animals are also examples of mammals. How
are these born? Are they hatched from eggs or born alive? How do the mother
mammals feed their young? Your right! Mother mammals feed their young by
providing them with milk? What part of their body used to breathe air? Are they
using their gills or lungs? Correct! They breathe air with their lungs. Class, most
mammals can walk, but there are also mammals that can swim and fly. For
example, the whales and bats. Most of mammals have four feet to walk, but
whales swim with their young with milk and have lungs and need air to breathe.
Other examples of mammals are humans, kangaroo, goat, dolphin, bat and cow.
Let us discuss the next classification of vertebrates which is birds. Class,
how do birds reproduce? Your right! Birds reproduce by laying eggs. How many
legs do birds have? Correct! They have two legs. Class, can you identify these
animals by hearing the souds they produce? (duct, chicken) Ducks and chickens
are examples of birds. Will you describe their body coverings? Very good! They
have feathers and wings. Class, the characteristics of birds are; they have feathers
and wings, they have two legs and they lay eggs. Other examples of birds are
eagle, duct, penguin, chicken and dove.
The next group of vertebrates is fish. What is your favourite fish? I guess
some of you likes tilapia, others like bangus. What do they have in their bodies?
Correct! They have scales on their bodies. Where do they live? That’s right! They
live in water. How do fish reproduce/ fish reproduce by laying eggs. They use
their fins and tails to swim. They have gills to breathe in oxygen contained in
water. The characteristics of fish are; they can breathe underwater using gills, not
lungs. They have scales and fins, they lay many eggs. Examples of fish are shark,
tuna fish, milk fish, catfish and tilapia.
Let’s proceed the next classification of vertebrates which is reptiles.
Examples are snake, crocodile, turtle and lizard. They have scales not fur. They
have dry skin and usually lay eggs. They have ear hole instead of ears. They have
four legs or no legs like the snake. Amphibians are cold blooded animals.
Now, let’s discuss the last group of vertebrates which is amphibians. Frog
belongs to this group of vertebrates. They have moist and smooth skin on their
bodies. They live both on land and in water. They reproduce by laying eggs in the
water. Examples of amphibians are frog, salamander, newt and caecilians.
Skills Now I would like to check your understanding about the concept you have
Enhancement
learned. Determine whether the characteristics mention are for mammals, birds,
fish, amphibians and reptiles.
1. They are covered with scales and breathe through their gills.
2. Their bodies are covered with feathers.
3. They have dry scaly skin.
4. They have smooth or moist skin.
5. They feed their young with milk.
Wrap-up From these explanations and exercises, we can summarize that there are five
characteristics of vertebrates. The mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians.
Outro I hope you learned a lot about our lesson today and thank you very much for
listening,. This has been your podcast teacher, Ma’am Rubelyn M. Baquiran,
saying listening is leaning. Stay safe. Stay home. Goodbye kids!!!
