Common questions

Powered by AI

Utilitarian motivations, which typically involve practical benefits and cost considerations, were found to not significantly affect consumer attitudes towards fashion renting. This contrasts with prior expectations that utilitarian consumers would be drawn to the practical benefits of renting. Instead, the study suggests that factors such as hedonic and ecological motivations are more influential in shaping positive attitudes .

Ecological motivation significantly impacts consumers' willingness to engage in fashion renting by aligning with their environmental concerns. Consumers who are environmentally conscious see fashion renting as a way to mitigate the issues related to clothing disposal and express social consciousness toward sustainable solutions. This motivation leads to a positive attitude towards fashion renting, as it represents an ecological solution that reduces waste and promotes sustainability .

The demographic profile of Indonesian consumers significantly influences their motivations and attitudes towards fashion renting. The study reveals that the majority of consumers are young adults aged 21-30, predominantly female, and tend to be motivated by hedonic factors due to their desire for excitement and new fashion trends. Additionally, their average income influences their perception of utilitarian value, where lower costs associated with renting as opposed to purchasing are appealing. These demographic factors converge to enhance positive attitudes towards fashion renting .

Hedonic motivation plays a significant role in shaping consumer attitudes towards fashion renting as it provides a psychological treat and an exciting, novel shopping experience. Consumers who are hedonic shoppers find fashion renting appealing due to the excitement and novelty it offers, which aligns well with their preference for new and stimulating shopping activities .

Attitudes are crucial in influencing behavioral intentions towards fashion renting. Individuals with positive attitudes about the benefits and value of fashion renting are more likely to show a strong intention to engage in renting services. This is because attitudes reflect a person's evaluation of expected outcomes and their subjective beliefs, which greatly shape their motivation and willingness to participate in such non-ownership activities .

Factors influencing behavioral intention towards fashion renting among Indonesian consumers include hedonic and ecological motivations, as well as attitudes towards fashion renting itself. These factors are interconnected in that positive attitudes driven by enjoyment (hedonic) and environmental responsibility (ecological) directly enhance the intention to use fashion renting services. The interaction between attitude and behavior intention indicates that the more positively consumers view renting, the more likely they are to engage in it .

Contamination concerns, as a potential moderation factor of attitudes towards fashion renting, appear to play a limited role according to the study results. The concerns are mitigated by the trust consumers place in rental companies' hygiene practices and their commitment, such as employing extra steaming processes after washing. Therefore, while contamination could theoretically influence attitudes negatively, in practice, consumer trust and the benefits of renting reduce its significance in decision-making .

Fashion renting is perceived as a practical response to the clothing disposal problem, offering a sustainable alternative to owning clothing. Consumers motivated by ecological factors favor renting as it reduces the impact of fast fashion and discourages excessive production and waste. These consumers are often willing to pay more for rental services that they perceive to contribute positively to environmental conservation .

Fashion renting is considered a sustainable fashion choice because it aligns with ecological motivations by reducing clothing waste through the sharing economy model. It decreases the need for new clothing production, thus contributing to environmental conservation. Consumers with ecological motivations view renting as a solution that supports sustainability, and this is supported by studies indicating significant positive attitudes among those concerned with sustainability issues .

For fashion rental businesses, the study findings suggest emphasizing hedonic and ecological benefits to increase consumer engagement. Marketing should focus on the excitement of experiencing new styles without ownership burdens and highlight the sustainable aspects that appeal to ecologically motivated consumers. Understanding the demographic appeal, particularly to young adult females, can inform targeted advertising strategies. Additionally, maintaining high hygiene standards can minimize contamination concerns and build consumer trust, which has been shown to be a minor concern for users .
