Chapter 3

This section comprises the methodologies used in this study. It involves the research design,
participants and the setting of the study, data gathering instruments, and the process of
gathering data, and as well as the discussion of how the data were analyzed.

Research Design

The researchers employed a qualitative design in this study. Qualitative research design
emphasizes the 'whys' or the underlying causes of a certain phenomenon. It involves
non-numerical data. Specifically, this study took a phenomenological approach to qualitative
research. This kind of approach examines human experiences and their views within these
experiences.

In this study, the researchers employed this kind of methodology to describe the experiences
that the chosen students had as well as their perceptions on the subject. Consequently, delving
deeply into the meaning behind these phrases to tackle these topics. Researchers are to draw
inferences from the data collected through this research design.

Participants of the Study

Students in the STEM strand of Batangas College of Arts and Science Inc. who gained
participation in STE competitions are the selected participants of this study. There were 20
students gathered in both the eleventh and twelfth grade of the strand. These respondents
were selected using a convenience sampling method, a type of non-probability sampling.
Through this type of sampling, the researchers are to select students based on the
qualifications of the study. The researchers are to ask initial questions for these qualifications to
be confirmed before including them as a participant. The convenience type of sampling is a type
of sampling that lets the researchers pick their participants based on the accessibility and
convenience, thus the name.

Setting of the Study

The study was conducted in the area of the Batangas College of Arts and Sciences Inc. in Lipa
City, Batangas. This is where respondents are chosen from as well as where the data collection
took place.

Data Gathering Instrument

Data gathering instruments are used to collect data from the participants selected. For a
qualitative research, there are the interviews, observations, case studies, and such. In this
study, a questionnaire is used to collect data from the respondents. An open-ended type of
questionnaire is implemented to collect data. It employs the questions "why" and "how" to have
a deeper interpretation by the researchers. This type of question is not easily answerable by a
'yes' or a 'no.' Rather, the respondents are to provide their answers through the use of words.
These questions are about the students' experiences and perceptions regarding their
participation in STE competitions and its influence on their academic performance.

Data Gathering Process

The initial step to gather data is by reviewing literature related to the study. Reviewing related
literature gathers data that could guide researchers what data to collect. This could lead the
researchers onto the next step which is formulation of questions for data collection.

Formulating questionnaires are vital for collection of data since it is the instrument for gathering
data. These research questionnaires are submitted to the researchers' research teacher for
approval, and later on revised if there are any. The next step for the researchers is to idenify
their participants through the use of convenience sampling.

Afterwards, a letter of approval is sent to the academic heads. Once this letter is approved, the
consent forms are distributed to the participant. These consent forms indicates their permission
to participate in the study. It includes the agreed upon statements, to which confidentiality of
the data is one. Subsequently, following to the participants' accomplishment of consent forms,
the open-ended questionnaires are then distributed to the respondents.
An analysis and a summary of the participants' answers are done by the researchers from the
collected questionnaires along with the respondents' answers. Therefore, from these summary
and analyses, conclusions are drawn, relating to the objectives of the research study.

Data Analysis

Ethical Considerations

The data gathered from the students are to be recognized as confidential by the researchers.
This clause indicates that the data they input in the questionnaires are not subjected to public
display. This means that the data collected is only between the researchers and the participant.

The researchers recognize the rights of the respondents to their choice of anonymity and their
voluntary participation. Should the students choose to be anonymous, the researchers are to
follow their request. Their participation to this study is voluntary. And if any of the participants
decide to withdraw from the study, the researchers are to follow their rights.

Consent forms and a letter of approval were given before the dissimination of the
questionnaires. Signing these consent forms means they give their permission to participate in
this study. A parental consent form is given to the minor participants' parents or gurdians to
answer, and each participant is given an informed consent form wherein the information about
the study is indicated, including the objectives, their roles as participants, and a brief
description about the study.

Common questions

To ensure credibility and relevance, the study involves several steps: initially reviewing related literature to guide data collection questions, formulating and revising questionnaires for approval by a research teacher, and utilizing open-ended questions to capture comprehensive insights. Each element is designed to reinforce the relevance and accuracy of the data collected, ensuring alignment with the study's objectives . These measures help maintain the reliability and pertinence of findings concerning students' STE competition experiences .

The setting of the study, conducted in the area of the Batangas College of Arts and Sciences Inc. in Lipa City, provides a contextual basis for participant selection and data gathering, reflecting the immediate educational environment of the students involved. It supports the authenticity and relevance of the data collected because participants are situated within the context relevant to their experiences in STE competitions, thereby grounding the interpretations in the actual experiences of the specific sample population .

Open-ended questionnaires enhance the data collection process by allowing students to provide detailed, narrative answers that reveal their personal experiences and perceptions regarding STE competitions. This method supports a deeper understanding of the subjective and nuanced insights into how these experiences affect their academic and personal growth . Unlike closed questions, open-ended queries encourage participants to discuss topics in their own words, offering richer, more insightful data .

Convenience sampling could affect the reliability and validity of the research findings in this study by introducing selection bias, as participants are chosen based on accessibility rather than random selection. This method limits the generalizability of the results to a wider population because the sample may not be representative . However, it allows for practical access and collection of data in contexts where the research focuses on specific experiences of readily available participants, aligning with the study's focus on understanding specific student experiences in a localized setting .

The phenomenological approach in qualitative research allows for a deep exploration of student experiences, aiming to understand their perceptions and the meanings they derive from participating in STE competitions. It emphasizes exploring the 'why' and underlying causes of phenomena . However, its limitations include subjective interpretation of non-numerical data, potential biases in participant selection through convenience sampling, and challenges in generalizing the findings due to the non-random participant selection .

The phenomenological approach facilitates understanding the impact by capturing detailed narratives of students' personal experiences, perceptions, and reflections. This method emphasizes interpreting the subjective meaning and importance that students ascribe to their participation, allowing researchers to derive insights into how these experiences influence motivations, learning outcomes, and academic performance. Thus, it provides a rich contextual understanding that relates students' competition involvement with their broader academic and personal developments .

The qualitative research design, particularly the phenomenological approach, is conducive to analyzing human experiences by focusing on participants' perceived realities and meanings. It facilitates comprehensive analysis by prioritizing in-depth, subjective insights through non-numerical data collection methods, such as open-ended questionnaires . This design allows researchers to explore 'whys' and underlying causes and provides a structured yet flexible framework to interpret the complex realities surrounding STE competition experiences .

Potential biases in qualitative research may include selection bias from convenience sampling, interviewer bias during questionnaire administration, and interpretation bias in data analysis. To mitigate these, the study could employ triangulation, involving multiple data sources or researchers to confirm findings and perspectives. Efforts to ensure transparency in describing how data are collected and handled could also reduce interpretation biases, along with systematically checking through peer debriefing or member checks for participant validation .

Using convenience sampling means the insights will predominantly reflect the perceptions and experiences of those who are easily accessible, potentially resembling a subset with immediate willingness to participate. This may result in biased findings as the sample is not random or necessarily diverse, which could limit the range of experiences considered and skew the interpretation towards easily accessible groups' narratives, affecting the breadth and diversity of insights on STE competition experiences .

The research prioritizes ethical considerations such as confidentiality, voluntary participation, and informed consent. Data are treated as confidential and are not shared publicly . Participants have the right to anonymity and can withdraw from the study at any time. Consent forms ensure participants are informed about the study's objectives, their rights, and the confidentiality of their responses. Parental consent is required for minors, further ensuring ethical adherence .
