Electric Machinery 2 Mid Term Exam

Name: ID:

1. A 20-kW, 250-V, four pole separately-excited dc machine is operated at a constant speed of 1500
r/min with a constant field current such that the open-circuit armature voltage is 250 V. What is the
frequency of the speed in hertz. The armature resistance is 0.2 Ω. Compute the armature current,
terminal power, and electromagnetic power and torque when the terminal voltage is (a) 260 v and
(b) 242 V.

120f
=1500 -> f = 50 Hz
p

(a) Ia=50 A
Terminal power = 13 kW
Electromagnetic power = 12.5 kW
Electromagnetic torque =39.79 N·m

(b) Ia=40 A
Terminal power = 9.68 kW
Electromagnetic power = 10 kW
Electromagnetic torque = 31.83 N·m

2. Let Fig.1 represent the saturation curve at 1200 rpm of a series motor. The motor has Ka = 40, and
is wound with 8 turns per pole. The total series-field and armature-circuit resistances are 25 mΩ
and 50 mΩ, respectively. Determine the flux per pole at (a) E = 200 V, (b) an excitation of 2500 At
per pole. And the motor runs at 200 V while taking 312 A in current. Determine (c) electromagnetic
torque, (d) motor speed, (e) mechanical power output.

(b).
Ø= 45.77 mWb

(c) Te= 571.2 N·m

(d) ωm=96.46 rad/s

(e) ouput power = 55.097 kW

3. A 230-V shunt motor delivers 30 hp at the shaft at 1120 rpm. If the motor has an
efficiency of 87 % at this load, determine (a) the total input power and (b) the line current. (c) If
the torque lost due to friction and winding is 7% of the shaft torque, calculate the developed
torque.
(a) Input power = 25.72 kW
(b) Input current = 111.8 A
(c) Developed torque = 204.2 N·m

4. A two-pole, 60-Hz synchronous machine has three-phase stator windings as shown in the figure.
The winding function of each phase can be approximated as

N 4
Na(θ)= cosθ
s π
N 4 Please pay attention to the
Nb(θ)= cos(θ-120˚)
s π axes of phase –b and phase -c
N 4
Nc(θ)= cos(θ+120˚)
s π

The phase-a winding is excited by an ac current as ia(t)=Ipk cosωt

What should be the phase-b and phase-c winding currents in order to produce positive (+θ
direction) rotating total mmf wave? Show the process how this mmf wave is obtained.

ia(t)=Ipk cosωt , ib(t)=Ipk cos(ωt-120˚) Balanced positive-sequence three phase currents

ic(t)=Ipk cos(ωt+120˚)

Total mmf = F = Fa + Fb + Fc
Fmax Fmax NIpk 4
Fa = ia(t)Na(θ) = cos(θ-ωt) + cos(θ+ωt) , where Fmax =
2 2 2 π
Fmax Fmax
Fb = ib(t)Nb(θ) = cos(θ-ωt) + cos(θ+ωt-120˚)
2 2
Fmax Fmax
Fc = ic(t)Nc(θ) = cos(θ-ωt) + cos(θ+ωt+120˚)

∴ F = Fa + Fb + Fc = Fmax cos(θ-ωt) -> +θ direction rotation
