Everyone has their own preferences when it comes
to the supplies they use. There is no right or wrong
when it comes to embroidery art. Here is a list of
what you need and what I like to use:
• Embroidery hoop – These come in lots of different sizes and materials. A
majority of my hoops are 4-6 inches. I find them to be the most “average”
size. I prefer the wooden ones from Hobby Lobby with the gold screw.
• Needles – Because embroidery floss is thicker than sewing thread, I like to
work with embroidery needles or tapestry needles. DMC Tapestry needles
in size 24 are my favorite.
• Fabric – You’ll want to stick to fabric with very little or no stretch. Most
embroiderers like to work with 100% cotton or linen.
• Embroidery Floss – DMC is my tried and true. Super shiny and great
quality. All of the numbers in this pattern will be DMC.
• Fabric pen/pencil/marker – These come in many different forms as well.
Some people prefer water soluble fabric markers or pencils (usually blue or
white), but a lot embroiderers use heat-erasable pens or markers from Pilot.
You can also use a normal pen or pencil. Just be sure that your stitching
fully covers your marks.
• Scissors – Small snipper-type scissors work best.

If you are a beginner, here are some basic tips and
instructions on how to get your hoop started:
1. Prepare your hoop – Once you have your fabric and hoop size chosen, you can
prepare the hoop for stitching. When cutting your fabric, give yourself an
extra two or three inches compared to the hoop size. Loosen the screw on your
hoop and separate the inner and outer hoop from each other. The fabric should
be placed flat between the inner and outer hoop, pushing the hoops back into
place. Begin to pull the edges of your fabric tightly in the hoop, then start to
tighten your screw. As you tighten the screw, be sure to continue pulling your
fabric tightly until both the screw and fabric are as tight as you can get them.
Your fabric should feel like a drum in the hoop. (If your fabric isn’t tight
enough, this can lead to puckering or loose stitches.)

2. Trace your pattern – You can choose to use an iPad/tablet or

computer/laptop screen to trace your pattern onto your fabric, or you can
simply print the pattern. When I first began embroidering, I would print my
pattern and use a window or another light source to trace the pattern onto my
hoop. Then I started to put my hoop directly against my laptop screen as a
light source for tracing. Now I prefer to lay my hoop flat against my tablet. If
you are using a screen, you can zoom in and out of the pattern to match the
size of your hoop. If you are going to print, you may be able to rescale the
pattern before printing. Lay your hoop against the screen or paper, so that
your fabric is completely flat against it. You should be able to see your pattern
through the fabric with your light source. If you are using an iPad, this is
where I turn on Guided Access, so that the screen stays where you need it.
Use your fabric pen/pencil/marker of choice to trace the pattern onto your

fabric. Unless I’m doing lots of woven roses, I choose to leave the fabric as it is
and stitch on the “inside” of the hoop, but you can flip the fabric around in your
hoop now or at the end.

3. Thread your needle and begin! – You can choose to start stitching wherever
you want. You should first be sure to thread your needle with your floss. Most of
the time I am using all 6 strands of my floss because I prefer the fuller look. For
woven roses I like to use 12 strands. You can choose to split up your floss and use
as many or as little strands as you’d like. This allows you to experiment with
texture. I tie my floss in a knot at the end to secure it. Always remember to start
your stitches from the back so that the knots or end of your thread isn’t visible.
You are now ready to begin.

To finish off your hoop, you can either leave the back uncovered, or you can
choose a fabric of your choice to cover the stitching.
1. If you choose to use another piece of fabric, unscrew your hoop, and put your
two fabrics back to back, so you can see your completed stitching on one side,
and the patterned fabric on the other. If you are not using any fabric for the
back, make sure your stitching is facing the right direction and your fabric is
tightened, and skip to step 4.
2. Put your layers of fabric in your hoop like you did in the beginning, and begin
to screw and tighten both layers as tight and evenly as possible. Make sure
you’re keeping your stitching centered and pulled the way you’d like it to look.
3. Once your layers of fabric are pulled as tightly as you can get them, and your
screw is twisted completely, begin to cut the back fabric piece all the way
down to the edge of the hoop.
4. Cut off any excess or fraying pieces off of the edge of your stitched fabric,
leaving yourself about an inch or so of fabric around the hoop.
5. Grab a needle and a piece of thread that is a little longer than the
circumference of your hoop. Coming from underneath, start a running stitch
all the way around the outside fabric. End your stitch going in, so that both
end pieces of thread are beside each other.
6. Remove your needle, and pull both ends together to create the ruffle effect. Tie
your ends together, then cut the excess thread. Your hoop is now backed and
finished off with a cute ruffle detail!
