1.0 COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion, students should be able to:

SCENARIO:

“IT’S TIME TO ZERO IN on WASTE MANAGEMENT”. This statement stated that the construction industry should embark
a zero waste in any construction project. This campaign has been announced targeted for zero waste at construction site
by 2030. Holistic waste management is highlighted as one of the strategies in adopting sustainable consumption and
production concepts. Incentives have been promised to spur private sectors to established recycling plants. A quick guide
from Department of Environment (DOE) shows how door, bricks, lighting fixtures and stairway banisters can be resold. For
instance, glass can be recycled into fibreglass or used in place of sand for paving. Asphalt can be turned back into aggregate
and reused. It is believed that this part of sustainable construction waste management aims to reduce the emission intensity
of greenhouse gases by 40%.

TASK

Based on the above statement, each group will be assigned a topic pertaining management of zero construction waste in
Malaysia construction industry. The topics are as follows:

Group 1: Legislation for Construction Waste Management in Malaysia

Group 2: Sustainable waste management - onsite incentives & green technology tax incentives
Group 3: Ways to dispose of waste (Reduction of waste through pre-planning, incentivising contractors and
preparation for deconstruction)
Group 4: Ways to dispose waste (3R construction waste reduction, the imposition of 3R through law and design
for disassembly, reuse & adaptability
Group 5: Innovations in construction site waste management
Group 6: How modular construction could achieve zero construction site waste management?
In a group of 5 to 6 students, accomplish the project with submission of a report form consisting of:

a) Identify the definition, criteria/features of the topics.

b) Explain the main agenda from the government towards sustainable construction site waste management.
c) Explain the processes/products/attributes related on the selected topic.
d) Give an example on the processes/products/attributes on the selected topic.
e) Include case study where necessary.
f) Explore the advantages and benefit of the topic selected.
f) Critical and analytical review of selected topic.

Requirement of the assignment:

1. Create a one-page A1 interactive poster that describes all the above-mentioned task, using your own creativity
and ideas. The poster must include:
a. Introduction to the topic given.
b. Contents
c. Conclusion/ summary
d. List of references (Proper citation and referencing is compulsory) – at the end of the
video. The references must at least based on five references.
2. You are encouraged to use any application software to be included in assisting your poster presentation, such as
PowToon, Sparkol, Animoto, Animaker, Biteable, Moovly, etc. or any other software that suit your preference.
3. Content of the poster must be in English.
4. The text on the poster must be clear and easily readable.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment of the assignment will be based on the followings:

• Content of the poster presentation and oral presentation.
• Completeness of the topic
• Critical and analytical review based on your findings of the abovementioned topic.
