Chapter IV

Specifications
This option enables the user to specify all the input specifications pertaining to the current job at a
single location. All the input parameters pertaining to each module are automatically supplied to the
concerned module. This enables considerable time to be saved since the user does not have to specify
the various input parameters for various modules at different locations.

All the codal provisions pertaining to various international codes are built in the design library and the
user can just click the appropriate code of practice and the corresponding provisions are automatically
passed on to the appropriate modules. This option displays a window as shown in the figure below .

The various input specifications are conveniently given into Tower Specification.

The various sub-menu options are described in greater detail below.

4.1 Tower Specifications


This option displays a window as shown in the figure below .

The user should specify general details like description of the project, project name, work order number
and client name. The user should also select the type of configuration, voltage, number of circuits, and
number of Earth Wires Tower Type & Tower ID. After specifying all the inputs, click the button Next,
which displays a window as shown below.

Now the user should specify the following input parameters.


i) Design Standard: The user shall select the appropriate Design Code for Steels required in the
corresponding design of Tower.
ii) Database for Angles Sizes: The user shall select the appropriate section database.
iii) Material Standard for Steel (s): Here the user shall select the appropriate codes for
steel properties.
iv) Material Standard for Bolt (s): The user shall select the appropriate code for bolt
properties.
v) Input for Sag Tension Calculations(Optional): The is the optional data for the user
The tower can be designed without specifying the sag tension data also.

The various menu options are described in greater detail below.


a) Groundwire Properties: Here the user shall specify the appropriate groundwire database. All
these groundwire databases are generated according to the various country codes. After
selecting the groundwire database, the user shall specify the groundwire code name by clicking
the browse button. For example, 'India' database displays a window as shown below .

The user selects the groundwire by clicking the check box provided. The user may also specify user-
defined Groundwire properties using the option 'User Defined'. This option displays a window as shown
below. After specifying the properties given in the edit boxes the users clicks OK to save the data on to
the database.

b) Conductor Properties: Here the user shall specify the appropriate conductor

database. All these conductor databases are generated according to the various country
codes. After selecting the conductor database, the user shall specify conductor code
name by clicking the browse button. For example, 'British' database displays a
window as shown below.

The user selects the Conductor by clicking the check box provided.
The user may also specify user-defined Conductor properties using the option 'User Defined'. This
option displays a window as shown below. After specifying the properties given in the edit boxes
the users clicks OK to save the data on to the database.

c) Number of sub-conductors: The user shall specify the number of sub-conductors


and the corresponding dimensions of the same.

d) Basic span: The user shall specify the basic span and also additional details for sag &
tension calculations like gust factor, shape factor, drag factor, creep and wind
pressure as shown in the figure below in the edit box provided.

e) Climatic Conditions: The user shall select the appropriate code for climatic conditions and
further specify the various climatic conditions by clicking the browsing button. For example, the
option IS: 802-1995, displays a window as shown below.

This window displays the standard climatic conditions as specified by IS:802-1995. It displays the
Basic condition and the other conditions along with the groundwire sag to conductor sag restrictions
are checked by default as per the codal provisions.
The user may also specify user-defined climatic conditions using the option 'User Defined'.
This option displays a window as shown below. The user enters the data in the edit boxes provided
below and click “OK” to save it to the database.

I. Equation (Sag Tension): The user shall specify the equation to be considered for sag & tension
calculations.
After specifying all the above inputs, click the button Next, which displays a window as shown
below. Here user shall specify the data pertaining to section shapes and properties, material type (Steel
and Bolt), design requirements, and the detailed description of various submenu options is given below .

a). Material type (Steel & Bolt): This option displays a window as shown below.
Here the software displays the grades available in the codes selected in the previous sheet. The user
shall select the appropriate steel & bolt grades by clicking the check boxes provided below.

Cost Factors-Shape cost: This option displays a window as shown below. The user can retain the factors
or modify it by clicking on the corresponding edit boxes

Here the user may specify cost factors for various shapes of the sections.

Cost Factors-Material cost: This option displays a window as shown below. The user can retain the
factors or modify it by clicking on the corresponding edit boxes

Here the user may specify material cost factors for various qualities of materials.

b)Section Shapes & Properties: This option displays a window as shown below.

Here the user shall select the sections to be considered for the current design and analysis along with the
appropriate cost factors (For detailed description of the cost factor refer to the option Inputs).

Procedure to select the sections


Select the appropriate steel quality (MS/HT/SHT) and the appropriate section procurement cost factor
(the user can type in new cost factor if required) and click the appropriate section names. He may select
more than one material quality at a time. This process shall be repeated for various
steel qualities and cost factors. However, any selection may be modified in the same manner. Here the
user has the option of modifying the Price of the section we select

c)Design Requirements: In this option the software displays the selected design code properties like
minimum (l/r) limits for both compression and tension, minimum thickness of the section for the
member class. This option displays a widow as shown in the figure below. Here the user shall specify
various member class properties like limiting stresses, bolt sizes, curve numbers, minimum thickness,
grade of steel, Buckling curve (in case the user selects ISO / EURO / BS8100 design codes) etc. Factor of
safety for the bolts is displayed.

By default the software will display curve numbers for the various member class for the equal angle
sections wherein the user can modify as per the selected section shapes for various classes as shown in
the figure below.

All the project and tower specifications are automatically transferred to the respective modules. The
user can view these input parameters in the respective modules.

Databases The user can view the provisions of various codes of practices by clicking the button
Databases option which displays a window as shown below.

The data is sub-grouped into the following groups:


It may be noted that the user can Edit/Modify the data in the following groups
• Groundwire/ Conductor database
• Angle Sizes
• Bolt & Steel
It may be noted that the user can only view the data in the following groups
• Design Requirements
• Wind pressure
The option Ground wire Conductor Database displays a window as shown below. It displays the properties
of a Groundwire/ conductor like self weight, diameter and effective area..etc., available in the
database. The data is organized in a tree structure and the user can add/edit the data. Procedure for
adding/editing is same as explained in the Bolt & Steel Properties below .

The option Angle sizes displays a window as shown below. It display the properties of Angles like area,
unit weight., etc available in the database The data is organized in a tree structure and the user can
add/edit the data. Procedure for adding/editing is same as explained in the Bolt & Steel properties
below.

The option Bolt & Steel displays a window as shown below. The data is organized in a tree structure for
bolt properties and steel properties.

To add and edit the data click ‘Add’ which is protected by the blank password , press enter key and the
User Name as ‘Admin’ as shown below. Click ‘Change Password’ button to enter user password.

To add new data click the right button on mouse by selecting the Grade and specify the required data
and save it and to edit select the data to be edited and modify it by clicking ‘Modify’ button as shown
below.

The option Design Requirements displays a window as shown below.

The data is organized in a tree structure for climatic conditions and member design parameters.
a) Climatic conditions: By clicking the following window is displayed.

It displays the various Climatic codes available in the database and the corresponding conditions
available in the codes like Basic conditions and the other conditions.

It displays the various Design Codes available and the corresponding properties of each design codes like
Slenderness limits for the member classes 1 to 7, along with the minimum diameter of bolt and the
minimum thickness of the section.

The option Wind Pressure displays a window as shown below. The data is organized in a tree structure. It
displays the various codes of the wind pressure and the corresponding zones available in the codes.
