Transcripts 2
Listen to the conservation between the woman and her co-worker about health and
fitness. Fill the missing information in the spaces. You will hear the recording
twice.

Kate: Bella! Did you watch the Health Programme on TV last night? They kept saying that
“Today's people are (1) ---------------- and unhealthy”
Bella: Uhm, I think that's right because you know people nowadays watch TV or work with a
computer all the time. They don't get enough (2) ---------------- .
Kate: Well, I know but a lot of young people are doing many (3) ---------------- things. For
example, if you go to the central park in the morning as well as in the afternoon, you will see
many groups play badminton, volleyball and skateboarding.
Bella: Yeah, but just some. I wonder whether unbalanced diets are the reason some people are
unhealthy. They eat more so they are getting bigger and (4) ---------------- .
Kate: Right! Today, people seem to eat more fast food than older (5) ---------------- did. And I
think another reason is that there is so much stress in everyday life and a lot of people do not get
enough sleep.
Bella: I don't know whether they are more (6) ---------------- or not but you are right that everyone
seems to go to bed late even when they have to go to school or work the next day. Normally, they
spend their nights watching films late, playing games or surfing the Internet.
Kate: Or watching the football match over night, right? There are so many fun things to do. So
even if they manage to get up on time the next morning, they are too (7) ---------------- to do
anything. They are also easy to get sick. Do you think people get sick more often nowadays?
Bella: Uhm, I don't know much about that. I think it is mostly cold or flu, perhaps a
(8) ---------------- or stomach ache which lasts a day or several days.
Kate: But we know more people are suffering from (9) ---------------- today than ever before, don't
we?
Bella: Yes, I think the reason is the (10) ---------------- and the food. In most cases, I don't think
their basic health is any different.
Kate: Well, that's not the way I see it but I hope you are right.

The dialogue in Source 2 addresses generational changes in dietary habits by highlighting that people today consume more fast food compared to previous generations. This shift is implicated in increasing health issues such as obesity and other diet-related problems. Kate mentions that stress and fast food are contributing factors, suggesting that people are bigger and fatter due to these dietary habits which are a significant departure from the diets of earlier generations .

In the conversation between Kate and Bella, exercise and diet play crucial roles in discussing health issues. Kate observes that although some young people engage in physical activities like badminton and skateboarding, overall sedentary behavior due to TV and computer use is prevalent. Bella highlights that unbalanced diets, notably the consumption of fast food, exacerbate health problems. Together, lack of exercise and poor diet contribute significantly to the modern perception of being unhealthy .

Bella provides evidence linking modern entertainment habits to health by noting that many people choose to stay up late engaging in activities such as watching films, playing games, or surfing the Internet. These habits reduce sleep duration, causing fatigue and impacting health. Additionally, even when individuals manage to wake up on time, they tend to feel too tired to be productive, which may lead to more frequent illnesses like colds or flus .

According to the dialogue, people are perceived as unhealthy primarily due to sedentary lifestyles, unbalanced diets, excessive fast food consumption, lack of exercise, insufficient sleep, and stress. Kate emphasizes that many people do not get enough sleep and often stay up late for entertainment, leading to fatigue and health issues. Bella adds that people tend to eat more fast food than previous generations, which contributes to getting bigger and fatter .

Sheila's daily routine aligns with good health practices by following a structured approach: she eats a balanced diet comprising vegetables, meat, rice, and salads, and drinks water or juice. She engages in regular physical activity by playing tennis or exercising in the sports center and maintains good hygiene by brushing her teeth after meals. Additionally, she ensures she gets enough rest by going to bed by ten o'clock to wake up early .

The perceived impact of sleep deprivation on people's health, according to Kate and Bella's dialogue, is significant. Lack of sufficient sleep results in fatigue and decreases the overall immune resilience, making individuals more susceptible to illnesses such as colds and flu. Sleep deprivation accentuates stress, reduces productivity, and exacerbates health issues, contributing to a general perception of being unwell .

From Bella's perspective, modern work culture significantly influences health by promoting sedentary habits and increasing stress levels. She notes that people often spend excessive time in front of computers, whether for work or leisure, which contributes to a lack of physical activity. The stress associated with work and the necessity to stay connected, often leading to poor sleep habits, further impacts health negatively. Bella suggests these aspects lead to physical inactivity and poor dietary choices, as people tend to prefer fast-food options amid their busy schedules .

Sheila's choice of evening physical activities, like playing tennis and exercising, contributes to long-term health benefits by enhancing cardiovascular fitness, building strength, and improving flexibility. Regular physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight, reduces the risk of chronic diseases like obesity and diabetes, and boosts mental health by alleviating stress. Additionally, engaging in sports promotes better sleep quality, thereby supporting overall well-being and energy maintenance .

Sheila's evening activities support her health and well-being by incorporating physical exercise and healthy eating habits. She walks to a sports center to play tennis or do exercises, which is beneficial for physical fitness. Additionally, when she feels hungry, Sheila opts for nutritious options like fruit instead of unhealthy snacks. These habits contribute to maintaining her energy levels and overall health .

Bella suggests that stress and lack of sleep are connected to modern health issues because everyday stressors may lead people to go to bed late, even when they have commitments the next day. The activities people engage in, like late-night movie watching or internet surfing, reduce sleep time, contributing to fatigue. Consequently, the combination of stress and inadequate sleep impacts one's health negatively, making them prone to illnesses like cold or flu .
