STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE

TITLE DFT CONTROL

PURPOSE To ensure the object’s coating DFT is maintained within the acceptable limits
1. DFT considerations shall be as per the standard ISO 19840.
2. The management shall prepare a DFT checking plan for each job.
3. Care shall be taken to include critical areas, shadow areas for proper control.
4. Operators & QC shall follow the DFT checking plan for the product.
5. Minimum nos of readings to take :
For objects upto 1 sqm : 5 readings, 1~3 sqm : 10 readings, 3~10 sqm : 15
readings, 10~20 sqm : 20 readings ... etc (as per ISO 19840).
6. DFT record shall be maintained per item for internal reference.
7. Maintain the batteries and calibration of the DFT gauge.
8. Field adjustment of the instrument shall be done once a shift or batch.
9. The "80-20 Rule" shall be followed for minimum DFT requirement (Minimum
80% of the DFT readings taken shall be greater than or equal to the NDFT. And
The remaining 20% readings shall be greater than or equal to 80% of the NDFT).
PROCEDURE 10. The Maximum DFT shall generally not exceed 2 times of the NDFT / spec DFT.
11. Critical spaces / overspray spaces may reach upto 3 times of the NDFT / spec
DFT.
12. Any excessive DFT areas shall be sanded down and re-coated, preferably before
finish coat.
13. All possible masking measures shall be taken to avoid high DFT due to repeated
sprays.
14. Hidden spaces for brush / roller build-up shall be identified and followed.
15. Every subsequent coat / stripe coat shall be applied only after DFT confirmation of
the preceeding coat.
16. A “Paint Marker” may be used to indicate the DFT readings on job as a guide for
next coat application.
17. DFT shall be checked only after “Hard Dry” of the painted surface … not with
tacky or soft coat.
