Abstract: The encryption in the field of information technology contains the conversion of data and files from the known
formula to other types of files. Therefore, the original form of files cannot be traced without knowing the key that is used in the
encryption process. Different types of encryption algorithms can exist with different properties. The appropriate algorithm can
be chosen according to the nature of application, each application suits with a specific algorithm. In this paper, a comparative
study was conducted for three types of algorithms AES, RSA, and Blowfish. Many performance metrics were used such as
symmetric/asymmetric key, key size in bits, encryption speed, decryption speed and file size to determine the properties of each
algorithm. Results show that RSA algorithm is very slow. Blowfish and AES treat the small files very quickly however, if the file
is large, speed of algorithms will differ. The symmetric Blowfish algorithm is faster than AES and RSA algorithms. Symmetric
algorithms provide higher security and higher speed for encryption and decryption, and asymmetric algorithms provide high
security but with more processing time.

Keywords: Encryption, Decryption, Symmetric Key, Asymmetric Key, Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), Blowfish.

Blowfish is more efficient than AES and RSA when dealing with smaller files or when high-speed encryption and decryption are required. Its efficiency is attributed to its simplicity and fewer computational requirements. It uses a block size of 64 bits and allows for variable-length keys, which provides flexibility and speed. Conversely, AES employs larger block sizes and more complex rounds, and RSA, due to its asymmetric nature, inherently has slower processing, making Blowfish preferable in applications where speed is crucial .

File size significantly affects encryption and decryption speeds across all three algorithms. Blowfish and AES demonstrate high-speed performance with smaller files, where the processing time is proportional to the file size. However, as file size increases, their speeds decrease due to the increased data volume to process. RSA shows notable efficiency issues regardless of file size, as its asymmetric nature inherently requires more computation. This analysis emphasizes the scalability challenges RSA faces compared to symmetric algorithms when file sizes increase .

The trade-off between security and performance in cryptographic algorithms is a crucial consideration. Symmetric algorithms like AES and Blowfish provide rapid processing but face limitations in key management security compared to asymmetric algorithms like RSA. While RSA offers superior security for key exchange, it suffers from significant performance drawbacks in terms of speed. This analysis underscores the need to balance the need for speed (favoring symmetric encryption) against the requirement for secure key exchange and data security that RSA provides .

Blowfish outperforms AES and RSA in terms of encryption and decryption speeds, especially for smaller files. AES also provides high performance with small files but exhibits reduced speed with large files. RSA, being an asymmetric algorithm, is significantly slower than both Blowfish and AES, making it less practical for encrypting large data sets quickly .

AES performance may degrade compared to Blowfish when handling large files or in environments with resource constraints. The complexity of AES, involving multiple rounds of encryption and larger key sizes, can lead to slower speeds in such conditions. Blowfish, with its simpler structure and lower resource demands, maintains high-speed performance, making it better suited in these scenarios .

RSA is preferred in scenarios where secure key exchange over an insecure channel is critical, such as in digital signatures or the initial setup of secure communications. Its ability to use a public key for encryption and a private key for decryption provides an added layer of security for exchanging encryption keys, offsetting its slower performance. This makes RSA highly valuable in applications like secure web protocols (e.g., HTTPS).

Symmetric encryption uses the same key for both encryption and decryption, offering advantages in terms of speed and lower resource consumption. This makes it suitable for encrypting large amounts of data. In contrast, asymmetric encryption uses two different keys - a public key for encryption and a private key for decryption. This method provides a higher level of security for transmitting encryption keys and sensitive data, but it is slower and less feasible for large data volumes .

AES offers advantages in terms of standardized and robust security, being adopted as a standard by the U.S. government. It uses block sizes of 128 bits with varying key lengths, providing strong encryption suitable for sensitive data across various applications. However, its complexity can result in slower performance compared to Blowfish when encrypting small data sets. Blowfish, with its faster processing of smaller data due to simpler operations, is advantageous in situations where speed is prioritized over standardized security .

The key size directly impacts both the security and speed of RSA encryption. Larger keys increase security by making the encryption harder to break but also increase the time required for encryption and decryption processes. For instance, using a 2048-bit key significantly enhances security compared to a 512-bit key, but also results in a slower processing speed due to the heavier computational load .

Blowfish's 64-bit block size contributes to its efficiency by reducing the processing complexity per block, enabling faster encryption and decryption compared to AES's 128-bit block size. The smaller block size means less data is processed in each round, resulting in quicker operations. However, this can also mean higher susceptibility to certain attack vectors compared to AES, which benefits from larger block sizes that offer enhanced security measures despite increasing the computational load .
