Canine Tick-Borne Disease Test Results

The document reports the results of a real-time PCR test performed on a 7-year-old female Labrador retriever named Eska to detect various tick-borne pathogens. The test was negative for Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma platys, Babesia canis, Babesia gibsoni, Hepatozoon canis, Babesia vogeli, Babesia rossi, Trypanosoma evansi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Ehrlichia ewangii.

Babesia Canis:
Babesia canis is blood protozoa that parasitize erythrocytes causing anemia in the infected dog. It is one of the most common infection that
is transmitted by the ticks present on the dog skin. Babesia canis is thought to cycle primarily between domestic dogs and Rhipicephalus
sanguineus the brown dog [Link] of canine babesiosis may present with wide variation of severity of clinical signs, ranging from a
hyperacute, shock-associated, hemolytic crisis to an inapparent, subclinical infection.

Babesia Gibsoni:
Babesia Gibsoni is blood protozoa that parasitize erythrocytes causing anemia in the infected dog. It is one of the most common tick born
infection that is transmitted by the ticks present on the dog skin.
Babesia gibsoni hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, lethargy and splenomegaly. In many cases, treatment is frustrating, low levels of
parasites remain and a chronic subclinical carrier state develops.
Babesia Vogeli:
Babesia Vogeli is one of the main cause of Babesiosis in Dog. The protozoa is transmitted by Rhipicephalus Sanguineus ticks which has
a global distribution but is most prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. Babesia Vogeli is regarded as being only mildly pathogenic
causing subclinical or only mild disease. B. Vogeli infections, severe complications can develop in dogs infected with other species
including systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), refractory hypotension and
septic shock.

Babesia Rossi:
Babesia Rossi is blood protozoa that parasitize erythrocytes causing anemia in the infected dog. It is one of the most common ticks born
infection that is transmitted by the ticks present on the dog skin. The protozoa get transmitted by Haemaphysalis elliptica and possibly H.
leachi. Babesia rossi causes peracute and acute disease, the clinical signs including pale mucous membranes, depression, tachycardia,
tachypnoea, anorexia, weakness, splenomegaly and fever. The clinical signs are attributed to tissue hypoxia resulting from anaemia and a

concomitant systemic inflammatory response syndrome caused by marked cytokine release. The severe form of the disease is characterised
by haemolytic anaemia and severe acid-base derangements with secondary multiple organ failure and complications such as acute renal
failure, hepatopathy with marked icterus, hypoglycaemia acute respiratory distress syndrome, cerebral pathology and additional immune-
mediated erythrocyte destruction. Mortality is around 12%. A feature of the disease is that, in contrast to babesiosis in other domestic
species, pups and immature dogs are also badly affected.

Anaplasma Platys:
Anaplasma species are obligate intracellular tickborne pathogens infecting the leukocytes of many vertebrates. The finding of
Anaplasma Platys in dogs and cats has been described but the epidemiological importance of this rickettsia to the feline population
remains unknown.

Ehrlichia Canis:
Ehrlichia Canis are a group of small, gram negative, pleiomorphic, obligate intracellular cocci that infect different blood cells in various animal
species and in humans. Canine ehrlichiosis presents as a rather no specific, multisystemic disorder with the primary complaints being
depression, lethargy, mild weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia with or without hemorrhagic tendencies.

Hepatozoon Canis:
Hepatozoon Canis is a tick borne protozoan parasite, classified in the Phylum Apicomplexa. The parasite is primarily transmitted by the tick,
Rhipicephalus sanguineus. In dogs, the infection results in the development of schizonts within various tissues and gamonts in the peripheral
blood. Hepatozoon canis infection in dogs can be associated with a distinct clinical syndrome that involves chronic myositis, debililation and
death.
Trypanosoma Evansi:
Trypanosoma Evansi is widely distributed monomorphic protozoan which infects pet and large animals such as dogs, camels, equines and
cattle. The organism also has been found infecting cats.
Trypanosoma Evansi is mechanically transmitted by blood sucking insect species. The parasite destroys red blood cells, provoking serious
and often fatal anaemia.
